The new W3 is solidly built and has a very comfortable feel in the hands, not slick or slippery. The camera is easy to carry and the included wrist strap adds a degree of security. The lens cover/power switch has a positive snap that leaves no doubt as to whether it is off or on. A ridge on the lens cover makes it easy to keep one's fingers out of the lenses.

The 3x (35mm - 105mm) zoom control ring surrounds the shutter release button. Like most zoom controls it is difficult to zoom slowly enough for accurate composition. Rather than trying to get a continuous zoom, it appears to be better to use an intermittent approach - quickly press the zoom control, hear the beep, let go of the control and the zoom moves one step in or out.

There is a parallax control on the top of the camera on the left side. This can be quite useful when the point of parallax is different from the point of focus/exposure. When pressed, the control causes the display to show both images simultaneously and adjustments can be made in fine increments. It can also be used in the Playback mode to adjust parallax before printing. Lenticular prints can be ordered online.

It is difficult to keep finger grease off of the 3-inch screen in normal handling, carrying, sliding into/out of a case, etc. This screen is incredible and gives the camera a huge "Wow!!" factor. It is a very high resolution - 1 million plus pixels - lenticular screen with virtually invisible lenses. This is not your father's "Winkie!" Fortunately, the grease has no impact on the imagery.

The battery/SD card cover is a fairly complicated plastic and metal affair that will get a great deal of use. Its operation is somewhat misleading as there are four raised dots on the front edge, however, they do not provide enough grip to actually open the door. The best way is to simply put one's thumb smack in the middle of the label and slide the door open. This will happen often because the battery will require frequent changing.

To become more familiar with the camera, I put it in its "fully-automatic everything" mode and played 3D tourist at the American Museum of Natural History. :-) Although the camera has a great deal of flexibility, I thought that the majority of users would just shoot in this mode most of the time and I wanted to see how it would perform.

Starting with a fully charged battery and a freshly formatted 4-GB SDHC card, I was able to take 156 pictures using the dual *.mpo/*.jpg mode - in other words, 78 discreet images. I shot a mix of bright exteriors on the walk over, and both available light and flash in the museum. I kept the camera turned off most of the time. Afterwards I reviewed the pictures with a friend.

This was enough to completely drain the battery which then took 2.5 hours to recharge.

The controls on the rear of the camera are similar to many P&S digital cameras but with the addition of a 2D/3D button and a Movie button. The Shutter Release button is used for both stills and movies. The selected mode is displayed on the screen.

The Disp/Back button steps the screen display through Information on, off, and a very useful "rule of thirds" grid display. This is invaluable for keeping the lenses horizontal.

The Playback button > can be used to turn the camera on and off without having to open the front lens cover. The Menu rocker switch is used to move through the images, and the Zoom Control can then be used to magnify them.

A Mode Selection dial provides access to Fully Auto, Program, Manual, Aperture Priority, two Scene Modes (that are assigned in the Menu) and two Advanced Modes.

The A(dvanced)3D position allows two images to be taken by the left lens, á la Cha-Cha, for situations where the normal 75mm baseline is too much or too little. After taking the first shot, it is displayed on the screen in an onionskin mode, partly transparent, so that the second shot can be aligned with it. These two images are then combined in the normal *.mpo format to yield a stereo image. This provides some interesting new macro capabilities.

The A(dvanced)2D position allows you to take two different images simultaneously, e.g., a wide shot and a close up or different color balances, etc. These images are just two individual *.jpgs.

Since there is no image stabilization, hand-holding at slower shutter speeds could be difficult.

Sensor noise appears to be very low, especially considering that, in the fully automatic mode, the lowest ISO is 400. I haven't yet explored the other manual settings which go down to ISO 100.

One problem I found is that the flash can create double shadows - one on either side of the subject - because it is in between the lenses. When possible, moving the subject away from the background will help.

The image quality is very good and the precise synchronization between the two image sensors adds substantially to that quality. Depth is quite apparent with no "cardboard cutout" effect.

I bought the Fujifilm W3 expecting that it might be an "almost, but not quite there" attempt at what I was looking for in a 3D camera. After one day on full auto, I'm totally impressed with its design, quality and capabilities. The rock-solid, cableless synchronization, HD video and amazingly clear 3D screen solve many of the difficulties I've dealt with previously. The fact that it has a multitude of other modes and features adds substantially to its value for my needs. No camera is perfect for everyone, but the W3 is a solid 2nd gen 3D contender and, for me at least, a keeper.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

We are using the 3D-W3 instead of our stereo 35mm film camera (Realist)
The 3D-W3 does a good job as a replacement. It gets you away from the dependance on the current slide films that are somewhat difficult to use for 3D and are unavailable in many corners of the world.
The large stereo base of the camera requires some adjustments. You will need to get further away from your subject to get an acceptable display of your 3D picture.
The quality of pictures taking under lower light conditions tend to be poor.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

As many others have reported online, the left lens does not reliably focus, or something else makes the left image soft in places - whatever the cause is, it's a bit of a cold shower for what is an interesting camera for 3D buffs. Kudos to Fujifilm for designing it, but they have a ways to go to make this camera what it should be (and what I paid for). The upside is that regardless of how you view your images - anaglyph, cross-eyed, parallel, or on-screen - the sharper right image compensates for the softer left image as they overlap to create the 3D effect. The downside is that the left lens is the only one used in 2D shooting, so don't count on this as your only camera for normal shots or you may be disappointed. As someone who has shot 3D before with a tripod and sliding head, the freedom this camera allows can't be overstated, letting you also shoot moving subjects which is otherwise impossible. The good outweighs the bad, so get this camera if you have interest in 3D.Likewise, the software required to view/divide your images isn't quite ready for prime time, and while it shows you an anaglyph on-screen there is no way to save the image as such - better be good with Photoshop to create your own side-by-side and anaglyphic images. All in all, it's worth the sub-$ price, but be sure to get a spare battery AND a large-capacity Class 6 or higher SD card if you want to record movies.

I used to own one and it was an amazing technology put together. What stands out is you can view the 3D picture you just took without needing for 3D glasses...and the quality is very good. BUT if you don't have a 3D TV at home it will be pretty much useless since you won't be able to enjoy it in bigger screen.

pics and vids are great. 3D works VERY well. pictures have a depth I have not seen in movies which "follows" you if you move left to right, up or down. crazy cool. Videos are 720p so they do look a tad blocky on a huge 1080p TV. Price is a fantastic value and I would use the money you save to buy extra batteries and SD cards NP-50, (32 GB class10)

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

We take this camera everywhere now and since it takes a .jpg PLUS a .mpo ( the 3D format) we don't really need to also carry our Fuji 2D camera everywhere except for special circumtsances like high zoom, very poor lighting, panorama etc. Best pics are those when there are objects in the foreground ( but to the side/s), subject in the middle and a far off background to offset these two. A hemi speherical bunch of flowers or a winding stairway streching into the distance are some of the best subjects to show off the 3D effect. You have to be careful initially , not to get one's fingers in front of either one of the two lenses ( that obviously are at the edges of the camera, and quite unlike 2D cameras that have 1 lens at the center). A personal peev ( not Fujifilm's fault) is that so few friends have both 3d viewing devices as well as the ability to view .mpo files - so sharing is not so much possible right now. Would be great if it had a viewfinder besides the lenticular screen for better composing of pics in bright daylight. Overall, a wonderful camera that take some great pics once you get an understanding of this almost entirely new photographic "way". Some day 3d pics are going to be easy to share ! We took some pics of the Grand Canyon and those are just amazing in 3D! Beats the 2d pics we took hands down. For us now, this experience has been so good that now - to take ONLY 2D pics feels almost like going back to B/W tv from color! We are probably going to want to keep our Fujifilm 2D camera for zoom, low light and complex photo setting options, but this camera is our mainstay now.

The 3D W3 picture you see in the camera screen is amazing, but in the computer looks like c*ap, the tiny lenses and sensors of this camera produce a low quality image. Right now i understand why the 3D W3 is the only 3D camera on the market. I guess we need the wait a couple of years until a really 3D camera hits the market. Save money, do not buy it!

I had only heard about this camera through articles on line etc. It is one unusual unit! Has the bells and whistles for most adjustments. The very fine adjustments are not there, but heck what camera has it all at this price? Great pictures in both 2d and 3d. However, you do need an extra battery or TWO for an extended shutting period. Yet even with this one draw back, the other features are way ahead of other 3d cameras, especially those that use one lens. You will not be disappointed in this point and shoot.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera purely for 3D photography and video. As such I had no expectations of prosumer or any super high quality pictures. All I wanted was a camera that took 3D pictures that really looked 3D. A year ago I bought another camera with a single lens that "created" a 3D MPO picture file by taking two shots one after the other. I had to LOOK for the 3D to see it. On this camera it just pops out at you! The effect is different based on the type of shot (shooting distant objects has limited 3D while close up has lots). I am very happy with the 3D pictures it has taken.

        • Learning about 3D

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera as a way to teach myself how to take 3D stereo photos and, so far, I'm quite happy with it.

On the plus side, the camera is easy to use, has a beautiful screen, and takes good pictures of most 3D scenes (provided that you ensure there are things at different "depths" or distances in the picture, as the manual recommends). The camera also includes a Fujichrome simulation mode which I absolutely love. It gives us those nice bright colors. It gives us the greens of summer, as that song about Fuji's once competitor remarked.

On the downside, the battery life is terrible. That's to be expected when a tiny battery is powering two complete cameras (two lenses and two sensors) plus a huge screen. Go ahead and get yourself an extra battery or two because you won't make it through even a single photo shoot with just one. The autofocus is also very slow, even in "quick autofocus" mode. And the lens has a very long focal length, even at its shortest zoom, so you won't be getting any wideangle shots here. (They wouldn't come out well in 3D anyway, as you'll learn from experience.)

The other caveat is that Fuji heavily advertises two "advanced" 3D modes that don't work so well. One is supposed to take two separate shots manually in order to allow you to move the camera and create a greater perception of depth (stereo base). The other mode takes the two interval shots automatically. As I am learning from my reading about stereo photography, there's no way a camera can do this on its own. The two images have to be VERY precisely aligned, far more than you can do with your hands and eyes and certainly not automatically while the camera is moving in an airplane, like the Fuji website shows. That's just ridiculous. The 3D photo you'll get from doing that will just make your eyes bleed.

If you buy this camera, take the time to learn about stereo photography, which has been around a lot longer than this camera. You're going to need a way to view these photos off-camera, like a 3D computer monitor or 3D TV. (Viewing them with anaglyph glasses or even a PokeScope is pretty awful. Lookup both these terms.) You're also going to need more software than comes with the camera, since the Fuji software does nothing in 3D.

A good place to start is with Michael Beech's Digital 3D Stereo Guide and a free program called Stereo Photo Maker. Be prepared to do some LEARNING and experimenting. 3D photography is fundamentally different from 2D and even if you are a professional 2D photographer (as I am) there's going to be a learning curve to getting great 3D pictures.

I have not yet seen any prints from the camera as they are expensive and likely to be less than great. Two photos is simply not enough to create great 3D in a lenticular print, I'm learning, even though it looks good on a screen. Be on the lookout for Alan Lo's LO3D digital camera which was just announced at CES. They are making a 3-lens and a 6-lens version specifically for getting more realism in lenticular prints.

In all, I recommend the Fujifilm W3 as an inexpensive entry-level 3D digital camera which will help you learn about 3D photography and surprise the heck out of your friends!

Aside from the novelty, is this a great camera? I couldn't tell you. So far, I have only viewed the images on the camera.I have to figure out how to get them to show on the 3D TV.

But everyone has been excited to see the 3D images of themselves on the camera... but they get disappointed when I tell them that they can't see it on their PC screen.

I love the 3d effect and it is getting closer to the quality of the two 1950 stereo cameras that I use when I am looking to get depth of field, but I haven,t seen that yet with the digital products on the market.........

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I've used Stereo cameras for over 30 years; Realist, FED, Kodak Stereo, Nimslo, and a medium format Sputnik. This is my first digital stereo, and so far I like it a lot. I print stereocards. The software is pretty basic and easy to use.
I am still learning the features of the Fuji, but so far it surpasses my expectations. I have spent more on stereo cameras that deliver less.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I HAVE USED THIS CAMERA TO DO STILLS AND VIDEO OF MY DAUGHTER LEARNING TO SURF. IT'S GREAT THAT YOU CAN SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 2D AND 3D SO EASY. THE ONE THING THAT IS A PROBLEM FOR ME IS THE PROGRAM MODE FOR THE DIFFERENT SETTINGS CAN GET TURNED EASILY AND I HAVE TO FORCE MYSELF TO REMEMBER TO CHECK IT EACH TIME I TURN ON THE CAMERA TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN THE P SETTING OTHERWISE THE PICTURE MAY NOT TURN OUT. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS AMAZING

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

This is a very intriguing and addictive item. Best enjoyed by gadget freaks, bored nerds, video addicts, or anyone with a 3d tv who wants to make home movies for it.
This is not the only camera I would pack on vacation. As a still camera, it's just too noisy and insensitive and can't compete with a DSLR. Its image sharpness is plenty good for 720p 3d video, however.
Like the GoPro Hero, the Fuji W3 has a place and a role in my bag of tricks for spicing up video and photo. Use only outdoors or in well-lit interiors and use the flash most of the time.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

Impressive 3D without glasses at the camera display. You have to "learn" how to take a 3D picture to get what the camera gives you the most: depth.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

          I love this camera.

          pros:
          -heavier than my s95
-lens are close to eye distance. i looked into the 3D camcorders and seem to be closer to each other. but for this price, it's a good lens design.
          -accepts large sd cards
-lcd screen looks like the future tv's well have someday where no more 3D glasses are needed
          -TWO ccd chips
-on camera mic is pretty quiet
-the camera surface is sooo smooth and shiny that my first touch produced finger prints. makes me want to clean after every use. black chrome with chrome spine.
          -spare battery has great price
          -friends love the lcd screen

recommended improvements but not complaints for the price:
-no mic jack. usually found in camcorders.
-weird how there's no on off button switch. it powers on/off by flipping the lens cover close.
-the buttons aren't your typical point and shoot. most times we press the center of the circle as "enter". the "enter" button is the "down" arrow of the circle
          -battery life is quick.
-can only shoot 3D subjects 5ft+. anything closer than 5ft would cause misalignments. i took sample shots at 4, 5, 7 feet of the same object. the best 3D effect was at 5 ft. 4ft gives headaches and double vision while 7ft started to get flat; only the background became 3D-ish. But i'm sure someday there will be a 3D camera that can change the subject distance. for now, left/right eye corrections would need to be made via post software.
-graining, unless u use a flash. video has some graining too. so use lots of light, as usual.

I use Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 plus to create red/cyan movie files and picture files. I haven't learned how to create shutter and polarized files but eventually will. for now, most people don't have polarized or shutter screens so red/cyan glasses are much cheaper to obtain than 3Dtv's.

other programs i know are Roxio and Sony Vegas. but Magix had more positive reviews and cheaper, plus shutter and polarize features.

i love how fuji even created a 8" 3D frame, Fujifilm V1. i'll wait for the next version for better resolution. the glassless 3dtv probably won't come out till like 2yrs from now. (optomitrists will be happy...joke)

all in all, i am not a photographer, but more of a videographer, exploring the 3D realm. But now I want to take videos AND photos of everything. for the price, it's great.

Amazing technology, the 3D is Really 3D, hooks up to my 3D Plasma HDTV and the Pictures are awesome.
The LCD on the Camera does a great job of displaying the 3D pictures without Glasses superbly. This Camera is a must have for the Family
