Let me start by saying the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the price, and I've found in life (especially with photo products) if that's your only complaint it's probably worth saving for... I had a canon 100-400 a few years ago when I switch to nikon. Nikon doesn't have anything similar (their 80-400 is terrible) so I went with their 70-300 VR and was impressed with the value. I also realized I really liked the size and weight and range of the lens for a FF camera for the tele work I do. When I switched back to canon, I got a 7D with the 70-300IS when they had a rebate option. That lens is terrible thanks to it's build and the fact the front element rotates. I then got a tamron 70-300VC as soon as they were available. It's a wonderful budget zoom, much better than the canon version (non L) but after a year of use the zoom ring and focus rings broke. This was in the middle of a sunrise shoot causing me to miss a pretty epic shot. It's since been fixed, but it made me realize if I can't trust a lens in the field it needs to be replaced. So I ordered this lens as soon as I got home. Wow, it's rock solid. Yes it's slightly bigger, but it's built like a tank. It feels much better than the push/pull 100-400. It's also sealed better and has better IS. Not the the 100-400 wasn't sharp, but this feels sharper. I'm very impressed with it. My biggest complaint is the cost followed by the fact canon thinks we should pay another [$]for the tripod colar (that they give you with the 100-400 and 70-200 2.8s). The added weight is also a bit of a bummer, but it's not a deal breaker and it does make for a nice solid setup when shooting. The zoom lock is covered by the hood when it's reversed though. Not the end of the world, but when you're putting it away you have to switch the switch before mounting the hood reversed.

The sharpness compared to the gold lens is remarkable. The only regret is that it is slow.
I do sports indoors and at night.. I constantly need to shoot at 6400 or H and get grain with my 7D.. Wish I got the faster lens.. or the 70-200 f2.8...
For portraits you will want to reshoot all your old stuff (if it was possible). Be careful, will get paper-cuts from the sharpness. j/k

After all the research, I landed on this one

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I spent so much time researching which telephoto L lens to buy. I agonized over the 70-200 f4 IS L and the 70-300L for what seems like forever. I watched endless youtube videos, and got lost in the depths of online forums and dp review articles. (side note: When I'm not in front of people, I enjoy wildlife and pet photography. I also do classical concert photography in *low light*. I shoot with a Canon 7D mk II) The extra 100mm over the 70-200s really makes the difference. Ok, so why did I make the decision I did? First, size. It is shorter than the 70-200s. Yes, it is heavier , but I tend to be a pretty mobile shooter, taking photos on trails or lugging my camera bag in a car or carrying on a plane across the country. So, size matters for portability for me (size and weight disqualified the 70-200 2.8s, fyi). Then, there's the pesky issue of f5.6 at the long end. How I've mentally dealt with that, and made the decision I did, is that the 70-300L is newer by 4 years than the 70-200 f4 IS. That's 4 years better image stabilization (yes, I know Canon only makes new IS every few years, but the 70-300 is a newer generation than the 70-200 f4 IS, which is what mattered to me), and 4 more years of R&D by Canon. The great IS enables me to bring down that shutter speed enough to brighten up the images even at f5.6. More than that, the reviews say the 70-300 L is sharper than the 70-200 f4 IS. And it is gorgeously sharp across the zoom range. I don't know if its flawed logic, but I basically decided that since the lens is sharper, I am "allowed" to raise my ISO settings a bit more when I'm shooting at the long end, to manufacture a brighter exposure. In short, better IS and greater sharpness give me the tools to overcome the lack of brightness of f5.6 at the long end of this lens. All in all, I opted for the newer, shorter, sharper, better stabilized lens, as opposed to the 70-200 f4 IS, and I am happy with my decision.

70-300 works well on the sidelines for sports - light enough to handle without tripod - and enough reach to cover field.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I just purchased this lens and took it on a photogaphy workshop in the Smokies. Loved the focal range that it gave me for the large scenics and the intimate landscapes and detail images I like to shoot. The only thing that is a challenge on the lens is that the zoom ring and the focusing ring are reversed from my other 3 Canon lenses and this caused confusion at times. The lens is heavier than the 70-200 that it replaced, but it is worth the extra weight to get the extra focal distance. An additional challenge is the length of the lens hood - hard to use a polarizing filter with it. Would buy it again.

Needing of a second lens for my Canon 5D Mark III, I decided to go with getting a zoom lens. So far I love this lens. After doing some test shooting, I am impressed with how far I can zoom into subjects and how sharp my shoots have been. It is heavy but I do not mind as it seems very well built. The price of the lens was where I expected for a nice lens like this and I plan to get a lot of great sots from this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I loved my new 6D and 24-105 lens but there was something missing with not being able to get close to people like I used to be able to do with my cropped frame t3i and Sigma telephoto. With the 70-300 I can not only get the photo I want but its sharpness is so much better with full frame and this telephoto lens.

Drawbacks, yes. Two lenses instead of one, weight, price, and it's harder to be invisible. I also wish that it was as good as the 70-200 f/2.8 with the -300 range.
I have yet to travel with it so I don't know if it will work as a "walking" lens but I expect to be using it a lot.

I upgraded from the older lower model Cannon with the same specifications. You could immediately tell the new lens had a faster focus and the picture quality was outstanding. I use this Lens mainly for taking photos of my sons playing baseball. Look forward to the rest of the season and to see the outstanding pictures I can get. Other parents and players want me to upload the pictures online so they can view.

I purchased this lens feeling skeptical about the fact that it's only f4-5.6 but I haven't found a way to work with it. Bhp did a great job packaging the item and it came right on time and very quickly! Would definitely recommend this lens to anyone who is seriously considering a telephoto L lens. The only thing is I wish that the lens case was sturdier

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

It is sharp and has beautiful colors. The lens stays put where you put it when all various focal lengths tried and used. I just confirmed it too with a camera. That is the best feature yet so one needs not to use one hand to keep it from sliding when used with downward or upward positions. My 24-10mm5 L slides both ways very quickly. I have gotten used to that. However, I am very pleased that this new and better lens is NOT slide happy!

For those mid and tele shots of the people on the street will do nicely with this lens. I took it out to shoot some sunset and bird pictures. My pictures taken with this new 70-300mm L have beautiful colors and sharpness. A little heavy for prolong handheld shooting and top heavy for the tripod too. I don't mind the focusing arrangement. I came from the old school of single focal length until Vivitar came out with the variable focal length lenses. Those were the every-thing-is manual labor days. I still remember the days when I had to take along just a 35mm and 135mm with my Nikormat to do some street shootings around the old Union Square and the old Woolworth areas. Today's auto focusing feather has saved many of my shooting opportunities under similar situations.

If it has the lens collar to go with it that would be most ideal. Heavy because it is built with quality. The lens hood is big and huge, I bought a 67mm metal lens hood that is for the normal 50mm and stacked my 72mm metal hood onto the 67mm hood to make the lens less attention getting when I go out on the streets. Yes, the Kalt 67mm metal hood that I bought from BH, the end came out with a 72mm thread. And the 72mm hood I had has an end thread of 77mm. That I put a snap on cap onto it. I am thinking to color the whole lens black. Not yet, still debating!

I am very pleased with BH's great service thru the many decades I have been buying my gears from them. I am extremely please that I have never received any used or open items from them passed as new. I hardly have any complaints and I hope I never will neither. Reviews from other photobugs have kept me well informed with the items I wanted to buy or of those I almost bought. Thank you to all of you reviewers.

I like the closer focusing range as opposed to my 400mm L's. For those who wants to know, the lens and the included hood were made in Japan. It is so said on the lens itself.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I have been using a really inexpensive zoom I got several years ago and the images were ok, but kind of soft. Not sharp.

I have been using this lens now for about a month, and I love it. It's sharp at both ends - 70 and 300. I live near a river with old dock pilings, and I was able to get some really nice closeups - the wood grain and nails in these old pilings are tack sharp at the 300mm end. I've also taken a lot of photos recently in very high wind without a tripod (in fact everything I've shot with this lens so far has been hand held) and the IS is outstanding. I know for sure I was drifting sideways while shooting and everything was still sharp. I've taken a few images of paintings on stucco walls in very low light without a flash with this lens with the camera at 3200 iso, and the texture of the stucco over which the paintings were placed is clearly visible.

The lens is hefty, but so far that has not been an issue for me. I'm using this lens on a Canon 6D.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I traded the "old" Canon 100-400L lens in on the 70-300L. B&H gave me more than $200 than KEH for the 100-400. That lens was just too soft and too heavy. I was never happy with the images.

The 70-300L on a 7D is a really nice combo. I've had the lens for 3 weeks now and have used it often for misc shots. Excellent images and particularly at short distances shooting at 300. Very sharp and comparable to my f4L 70-200IS. (I won't be getting rid of that lens!)

On the 7D with grip, the lens balances OK. I will admit it's a bit heavy but my Black Rapid strap handles the load well. BTW, the Black Rapid strap is excellent.

I'm getting used to the zoom and focus ring location being opposite than my other Canon lenses. But I'm not crazy about it and find that zooming is a bit awkward - at least so far it is.

As others have said, IS on this lens is excellent as is auto focus speed.

I have no complaints about the f4-f5.6 aperture range. Just bump the ISO up when needed.

Bokeh is pretty good especially at short distances.

Absolutely no lens creep so far.

I'm not going to whine about a missing tripod ring and I will purchase the Canon ring from B&H soon. Canon is making a marketing and customer satisfaction mistake for not supplying one.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I've had my Canon 70-300L IS lens since the middle of 2012. I use it mainly for shooting photos of animals and plants at the local zoo. The lens was ordered as a replacement for a Canon 70-300 IS (Non L) lens. I normally go to the Zoo at least once a week and regularly shoot between 400-750 photos each time. First, as to the difference between the 70-300L lens and the cheaper Non-L lens -- The L lens is much sharper, especially at the 300mm setting. With the cheaper Non-L lens, I was consistently having problems getting sharp images. However, in the several years I've used the 70-300L lens, almost all of my shots have been virtually tack-sharp --it's been the sharpest lens I've ever owned. The vast majority of my pictures, taken without the aid of either a monopod or a tripod, are taken with the lens set at 300mm. With the 1.6x size factor of the 7D and its APS image plate, the lens equates to a 480mm lens. I have consistently been able to defeat the chain link and other fencing for the most part. Suggestion as to shooting through fencing -- use the center focus point only and aim the shot so that the focus point does not fall on a fence chain link. And a second suggestion -- be sure to shoot through the fence in an area where the fence is in the shade. If the chain links are in the sun, they will most likely show up in the photo. During the past year I've been shooting a lot of flower and plant pictures with this lens as well as shots of small reptiles indoors. The lens focuses from 3.9 feet or more, but as the lens is a 70-300mm lens, I've been able to get almost macro photos of plants and small animals with great 'bokeh' in the background. For indoor shots relatively close-up as well as outdoor shots at its telephoto 300mm and other lengths, I've used my Canon 430EX Flash, both for fill-in and for higher intensity flash shots -- that gives some highlights in the eyes, etc. The lens, while a bit on the heavier side, has been giving me great hand-held shots using the Image Stabilization. In conclusion -- This lens has become my go-to lens at the zoo. Most of the time over the years I've had it, it's the only lens I've carried with me. I also have used this lens as a 2nd lens at my young grandkids' birthday parties. While my main lens for parties and social gatherings has been my Canon 28-135 IS lens, the 70-300 lens is great for close-ups at parties where children are playing on equipment, such as long slides and trampolines and are too far away for me to capture a great image with my shorter lens. Using continuous focusing I have gotten some great action shots with this lens. I recommend the lens highly.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I've been using this lens for over a month and simply said, 'I love it'. It's weight is not an issue, nor is the 'reversed' location of the zoom and focus rings. I use it on both a 70d and 5d3, results are impressive in both IQ and color; Canon quality all the way. this lens will pretty much replace my heavier 100-400L IS for most use.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I initially purchased the Canon 70-300mm IS (non L) lens. The price is reasonable, and it is compact and lightweight. Can get good center to edge sharpness if aperture is set between f8 and f11. I decided to try the Canon 70-300 L lens, and what a big difference in performance. The first thing I noticed, the images are very sharp and has excellent contrast. Focusing is much faster and quieter then the non L lens. The front element does not rotate, so that's good when using a polarizer. It also focus slightly closer. The zoom and focus ring turns very smooth. Canon usually locate the zoom ring towards the rear of the lens, but this time they placed the zoom ring towards the front. So I find myself grabbing the focus ring instead. For the price of this lens, it would have been nice if Canon included the tripod mount. This lens is much heavier than the non L version. I like that it is compact in size, so it can fit in just about any smaller camera bag. I decided to keep the L lens and very happy with it.
