I'm a life-long, agency-tenured creative. Been around a lot of equipment and a lot of photographers and videographers. So when I decided to get really serious about offering video, I did my research, and tried several well-rated DSLR's for the job. I shoot documentaries. My subjects require lots of in-field shooting; I need to be mobile, light, and fast. I can't waste time with systems that require multiple steps for exposure...things happen too quickly. Additionally, I want to be able to craft a great shot when I do have the time...so full manual control is important to me. The GH2 is, quite simply, a great video DSLR. It's priced very well, especially if you already have an arsenal of lenses, as I do. I shoot Nikon for my stills. With a relatively inexpensive micro-four-thirds converter, all the glass I love can now contribute towards equally lovely 1080i video. Strengths: - Amazing sensor: excellent low-light sensitivity- Full manual control for video: shutter speed, ISO, and with lenses with an aperture control ring, great depth of field control. (Even for my Nikon G lenses, you can acquire a diopter with a manual aperture ring. Magical.)- Light, and unobtrusive. Although I do use a full rig for controlled situations and interviews, it's light enough to go on a hand-held steady-cam type device for smooth images for moving targets. In a public situation, it doesn't attract lots of attention, which is also a boon for documentary shooting. - Flip-out, fully articulating 3" touchscreen: you want extreme angles without contorting yourself to man the camera? This is your tool. The touchscreen and "Quick Menu" enables you to access the most go-to controls on the fly, including manual adjustment assist, which is an absolute godsend for video. Not So Greats:- Battery longevity: Although this little gem doesn't overheat like the other DSLR's I've used when shooting video, it doesn't shoot as long without requiring a battery change. I've purchased multiple batteries, and keep 'em juiced for field work, and plug it into a wall for interviews and other controlled work. - Mac file compatibility: I use Final Cut Pro X to edit my footage, and although I can import directly from the card into FCPX, my preferred method is to do what I usually do with my Nikon's: drag the files into a well-organized directory structure in the Finder, then import. That way, all my keywords are retained for easier sorting and searching. The GH2's file type isn't so linear; you can't just pull your footage off the card and organize it into folders. You have to do a specific import. If you're an old pro using larger professional cameras, you'll find the control offered by this small, amazing unit to be absolutely delightful. If you're new to DSLR video, but have a good supply of photo gear, you'll find this to be a very easy entree to the genre, and it's flexible enough to accomodate what you've already got. Amazing quality. Amazing price. Flexible application. It deserves the accolades the industry has given it.

Bought mainly for stills knowing GH2 shines more for it's video capabilities. I was not impressed with the GH2, especially sharpness of the pictures, it may be due to the kit lens. I didn't try any other lens. If I had bought any of the highly regarded primes then I would cross my budget. Hence I had to return GH2. I was impressed with the ease of use credit to the body controls as this was my main reason to buy GH2.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

I had purchased this as a second camera to go along with my GH3. (I had had a GH2 before, and was quite happy with it, but sold it to get the GH3.) The GH2 is still an excellent camera, but in terms of absolute image quality, it really has been surpassed by the GH3. If you plan to use it at low ISOs only, it's still pretty good, but, really, the technology has come quite a ways since this camera was introduced, and there are other options in M43 that really do surpass it.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

The GH2 is a fantastic camera, right out of the box. My usage is mainly for video work, but I find it also excels in photography.I installed the Cluster firmware on this camera and am currently running at a very stable 88mbps. Low light detail is incredible for a sub $ camera. Be sure and pick up the 20mm Pancake lens for this camera, it's incredible. Also when shooting video, the battery lasts about an hour and a half. I picked up a spare for very cheap.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

I intend to replace the two large, cumbersome, older and relatively more expensive prosumer video cameras that I regularly use in my recording studio with two or more Panasonic GH2's. My first GH2 arrived about two weeks ago. And I have to say I am thrilled with how quickly and simply I am getting great recordings with this camera. My choice for first lens was the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f1.7 pancake. Bought it for the shallow depth of field and the performance in low light. The only real drawbacks I've encountered with this camera so far - and I was aware these drawbacks when I bought the camera - is the auto recording quality is rather poor and auto-focus is a bit wonky in low-light. I normally use both, an independent audio recorder and studio lights when I record anyway. So these are not huge issues for me. I expect to buy either a second GH2 or perhaps the newer and more expensive GH3 when it becomes available. The GH2 is really a wonderful camera for the money.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

The video quality of this unit is exceptional. I paired it with the lumix 20mm 1.7 to start with, and all of the footage I've tested looks amazing. There are hundreds of third-party custom settings available (referred to as "hacks"). This can give the video a considerably greater data rate and other perks that give you greater wiggle room in post production.

The Micro Four Thirds system has impressed me as well. I've been slowly building a small kit of relatively inexpensive prime lenses with excellent output. If I pick up lenses at a garage sale or find old ones in storage, I can adapt from almost any other lens system.

The camera is pretty light and small, which doesn't feel particularly awesome in your hands. The sensor size is smaller than the big boys out there now. But the video quality is still awesome, and with the right work, I'm sure you can get similar effective results.

If you are making video, and are budget-conscious, I'd go with the GH2 and use the money saved on the body to buy a couple good lenses.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

I've had a GH2 for two years now and I just bought another body so I can do two-camera video shoots for concerts, weddings, and other live events. This camera is simply amazing for video. The micro four thirds lenses are tack sharp and much cheaper than the APS-C or full frame lenses. I use an external audio recorder for professional sound, but it's easy to sync up video and audio in post with cheap sync software. Just about the only drawback to this camera is its size: it's so small! It's not very impressive to clients when they me shooting with it, but they're very impressed with its image quality. I wish that it had an extended battery grip so it would fit better in my large hands, but I don't really need that. In case your wondering, for photos it's excellent too. I've used it to shoot wedding photography and it takes great JPGs and RAWs. I also use it for night sky photography. I would invest in some fast primes for this if I were you. And read up on the online forums about this camera. There's lots of support for it!

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

I'm doing this review from a video producer's perspective... as that's what I am.
I've had the GH2 for 2 weeks now and have used it on three shoots, 1 as primary and 2 as my secondary camera.
And(full disclosure) I'm using the Driftwood patch/hack, anyone looking at this camera probably knows what that is...if not google it.

I've found the image quality of all my video well above what I expected.
Rich color, crisp lines and controls easy to adjust on the fly.
For video, the GH2 suffers from the same DSLR problems that all other brands do.(More on that later).
So while shooting is fast and intuitive, ingesting and fixing the videos in post has been a steep learning curve.

              BEGINNER'S CAMERA WITH PRO SPECS
Along with the post learning curve comes LENSES...as a video nerd, I know nothing about lenses, adapters, f stop or girls.
I didn't want to spend a crazy amount of money of a camera that I might not be able to use.
But check the specs... and look up video shot on this thing BEAUTIFUL! If you know how to use it, the GH2 can get you pro looking video
Getting the GH2 ment that I had more money for nice lenses and I could learn some of the basics of DSLR's so later I can upgrade(and keep all the glass).
The main reason I purchased the GH2 is for it's INCREDIBLE low light capabilities.
I shoot bands in night clubs and bars... places not known for their nice even lighting. The GH2 (with hack) has been performed brilliantly, I can almost see in the dark.

              THE DSLR DOWNSIDES OF VIDEO
              1. Rolling Shutter: If your subject or camera moves to fast, your video will have a wobble...or jello effect. Most wobbles can be fixed in post... but learning to shoot with a steady hand and smooth motion can be rough for some.
              2. Aliasing & Moire: DSLR's were designed primarily to shoot still photos at much higher resolution than their video mode allows. So, in order to drop from 4,608 x 3,456 in still mode to 1920 x 1080, the camera skips lines. This causes "rainbow lines" or color distortion that can not be cleared up easily.
              3. Shaky Cam: Because of their small size, DSLR's are more prone to pick up on the tiny movements that your hands make. This can lead to jerkier movement and jitter when not intended.
Some lenses come with image stabilization, but if you're working with older or 3rd party lenses be prepared to deal with jitters.

              WRAPPING UP:
For videographers this little guy will be a nice addition to your current gear.
It has the ability to add a cinematic flair to weddings and talking head interviews.
But don't hink of this as a replacement for your current camera...just a really nice tool.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

This is a positive review for a couple of reasons but one of them is that I am jumping from the tape-based DV world into the HDSLR universe. Keeping that in mind, I still think this camera does it better.

I have been looking high and low for a camera to shoot videos. Camcorders are fine but HDSLR's ability to change lenses and their ability benefit from the sensor used for photography make them a better choice.

Now, prices can be an issue but the GH2's video performance is such that in the end it turns out to be cheaper than camcorders and other cameras for equivalent results.

Out of the box, using the 24P Cinema mode, the GH2 produces stunning footage even in low light conditions. I was floored but again, the jump from my 10 year old SD Handycam to HD has a lot to do with it.

The battery life is so-so but batteries get charged within 2 hours or so. I would get an extra battery or two but be warned they are oddly a little tough to come by. You'll have to look for them from various online sources.

The amount of settings to tinker with can be overwhelming but I am sure it is the case with other HDSLR. Moreover, it simply means that you can refine both how you use the camera and the image quality in many ways.

Changing lenses can be intimidating but the GH2 is well equipped to install adapter mounts for all sorts of lenses. The results are worth it since you greatly broaden your horizons.

Another point to make is that the GH2 community is very active and many tutorials and forums abound. It is easy to find answers, even though the instruction manual is fairly extensive and will serve you well.

GH2 owners know they have a special camera and dollar for dollar it will be difficult to find a better camera if you want to shoot stunning footage and take beautiful pictures.

The GH2 is a great compact solution for those who are looking for a DSLR to shoot video. The fact that it is hackable to get 180megabytes is amazing. The lens choices for micro four thirds cameras is growing. My biggest complaint is lack of a headphone jack to monitor audio.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

Bought mainly for stills knowing GH2 shines more for it's video capabilities. I was not impressed with the GH2, especially sharpness of the pictures, it may be due to the kit lens. I didn't try any other lens. If I had bought any of the highly regarded primes then I would cross my budget. Hence I had to return GH2. I was impressed with the ease of use credit to the body controls as this was my main reason to buy GH2.

This camera is one that you do not want to judge, period! You can't say it isn't good if you haven't "tasted" (tried) it and If you did those words won't be leaving your mouth.

Excellent peace of equipment. I use this for professional video.

                  Pros
                  - Amazing quality for price
                  - Great range of lenses
                  - Light-weight and great in size
                  - Very nice in Low-light settings

                  Cons
                  - A DSLR that is geared mainly towards film
                  - Taking still images isn't the greatest

This is definitely worth every penny with no regrets whatsoever. I will say that if you are looking to do photography you may want to consider other options but if film is your thing this is it! Truly a beautiful piece of work.

This little gem is a must for budding cinematographers, particularly when hacked. Despite it's age, the picture quality is still better than most of its far higher priced competitors. A classic!

When I wanted to get an HD camera for video my first thought was the canon 7d of course. However some smart fiends pointed me in the direction if the Lumix GH2 and I couldn't not be more thankful. With the hack available online, this [$] camera becomes a POWERHOUSE. The online support from the GH2 community is fantastic as well. If you're looking for an affordable production camera and want to spend under [$] but produce work that looks like it cost [$] pick this baby up NOW.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

This camera performs like a pro when it comes to 1080 24p. I use it only for its video functions. The price of OEM batteries is insulting for this camera! You can buy some decent generic batteries online. The mic-in jack is a 2.5mm mini which forces you to connect a cheap adapter which may negatively effect audio quality and increases risk of damaging the input. Those negative observations aside...This thing is awesome!!!

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

Just got the GH2 at a remarkable price after using the G1 for many years. This camera is a marked improvement over any models before it, especially at high ISOs - excellent image quality up to and including 800. The gh3 may be 1/2 to a full stop better but not worth it for the price of this little beauty! I shoot professionally and I will be using this camera a lot. Third party batteries work fine in this camera too, although the battery indicator will not work. Tip: get the 45-200 lens - this lens is very affordable and sharp and works great with this camera. Why pay almost 2.5 times the price of the newer model when the image quality of the GH2 is almost as good. Highly recommended - get them before the sell out!

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

This is my go to camera for most of my travel and walk about photography. Its a very light and compact kit that is a breeze to travel with and therefore always with me should that magic photo opp appear. The only low point has been the not so good JPG images straight from the camera and poor battery life compared to my past Nikons.

I mainly shot RAW with Lightroom 4 so the JPG issue is not a big problem for me, its a shame panasonic did not have the wonderful JPG output of the Olympus m4/3 cameras or the Fujis...

As time goes on I have found myself using FF nikon gear alot less and even looking at a total switch to m4/3 for my pro work.
The new f2.8 lenses and the oly 75mm f1.8 may be the items that swing me totally... along with the new GH3

Comments about Lumix DMC-GH2 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Black):

I did a lot of research about this year about cameras that would meet my needs and came up with the following short list: Panasonic GH-2, Fuji X100, Fuji X-E1, Fuji X-Pro1, Olympus OM-D E-M5. You can tell by this grouping the features that were important to me. Yes, the GH-2 is perhaps more highly regarded for motion video capture than as a still-shot camera. However, it takes excellent still shots too. It works flawlessly with the 20mm/ f1.7 pancake lens (which I also purchased). I had considered getting the same lens with the OM-D but read about compatibility issues (banding) and decided to steer clear for now. Yes, the other cameras in the group (above) look physically more appealing to me. Even adding a fast 20mm lens + extra battery + fast SD card to the GH2 body, I still paid less than I would for the next least expensive body. The savings was worth it to me for a camera that can hold its own (mostly) with the others in the group on still shots and maybe best them on video (especially with hacks). Based upon the photos I've taken so far I am very satisfied with my purchase. I expect be able to get several years of service from this camera and meanwhile let sit out several iterations of the other mirror-less interchangeable lens cameras as their designs mature. Very compelling approach... I think I am hooked. Also, I picked up an adapter to let me use some of my fast Nikon manual lenses with the GH-2. I don't think I'll get bored any time soon. Battery life hasn't been a problem yet - but I won't use the LCD screen much since the VF is so good so I should be OK.

I did not realize how small this camera was.

If you have large hands you might have trouble keeping your hand from accidentally hitting some of the buttons on the right side while gripping the camera.

                    The camera takes great pictures.

Has good low light performance ... auto focus hunts more than I thought it would in low light. May want to plan on using manual focus in low light situations.

Overall it is a nice camera. After viewing reviews comparing this cameras video with the Panasonic TM700, I bought it because I enjoyed my TM700 so much.

I would recommend the Lumix GH2 because of image quality ... Just be prepared to figure out a way to keep from accidentally hitting buttons with your gripping hand.
