After 2 months of searching for a small DSLR quality camera I finally found the one I want. The GF2 meets my expectations for a small, simple, high quality camera with great still and video. I tried the E-PL2; took it back because iAuto mode produced far too warm and yellow pics in indoor lighting. I tried the Nex5; took it back because the images were way too soft, my point-and-shoot took sharper pictures. Both the E-PL2 and Nex5 can produce good images if you mess with settings, but the GF2 in iAuto mode is simply better. White objects, such as an closet doors, actually come out white with the GF2. I know that sounds like a simple statement, but you would not believe the trouble other cameras have producing whites and light colors in low light. The E-PL2 and Nex5 have better noise quality at high ISO, but in general I found that I kept more of the pics using the GF2 especially the indoor shots. And by the way, when I test cameras I do not use tripods and fancy lighting, I just shoot real life situations.

The touchscreen works OK, not great. Enough said.

The video looks really nice. Not as good as a Hollywood HD movies, but better than most camcorders I have had. Warning, even though it uses AVCHD compression, the video files are still huge. Plan on killing a day editing clips and creating dvds if you shoot more then an hour of video.

The GF2 does not produce as good of a picture as my cousins high end $2000 DSRL, but it is much better than a point-and-shoot. Professionals probably should not get the GF2, but prosumers (like me) will love it.

I loved the mechanics of this camera. But ultimately a camera comes down to the quality of the image. I saw noise in each image that needed cleaning. Way more noise than I would hope for. I shoot in RAW, so sure, I can clean it up in ACR, but -

I went through reviews of the camera and found something I had missed before I bought the camera - each and every review qualifies the image quality - "great in good light", "good quality below ISO 400". None compared it to Canon 7D or 60D.

The other alternative to Panasonic is Olympus. My first digital camera in 1999 was an Olympus. I started researching that camera - and the image quality is less noisy and better. I am returning the Panasonic, and purchasing the Olympus E-PL2 14-42mm and 40-150mm kit.

Lost of people love this camera. I wanted to. I could not, only because the sensor noise fell short of what I think it should be,

Comments about Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera W/14-42mm Lens (Black):

My first m4/3 and so far I love it. I have always had a need for a smaller goto camera with raw support and realy was looking for something better that all the point & shoot options I have tried. I have owned the Canon G10, G11 even Leica D lux-4 and I have been more pleased by the results of the GF2 by far over all the rest. Still learning of the posiblilties with this camrea but I absolutly love it. Thie touch screen is actually quicker and easyer than dealing with a top dial so I do not miss the dial that was removed from the previous GF1. And you don't even have to use the touch screen b/c all acess is given in the navigation buttons quickly. This camera is really a hiddedn jem and has the same look and feel of my Leica D lux-4 but with better iso performance.

I am also using this for video as a B-cam to my Canon 7d and the footage looks great together. Plus it has avery smooth auto focus. To be honest I am really surprized but what the camera can do.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera W/14-42mm Lens (Black):

I was looking for a camera that did well in low light. The GF2 is not it. It did great in day light. I really did like the touch screen and thought that was a really nice feature. The lenses were a nice feature as well, but I was really looking for a camera that I can take everywhere, unlike my DSLR. The lens is bulkier than I thought it would be, so was not what I was looking for.

The older model has the weight to make it feels solid as compare with the newer GF3. There are more manual and controls and you can feel you are using a professional camera.
I adapted an old Nikon manual lens (50mm 1.8) and the images produced are amazing. You can get professional photos with an Nikon-M4/3 adapter. Amd again you pay a fraction of the cost against buying a new m4/3 lens.

So far the camera perform better than I expected. I really love this camera. The auto focus is very fast. I was able to capture amazing moments without delay. The button organisation is user friendly as I'm still new using that. I also like the additional scene in the camera. really love it. i tell you, you will not regret buying this DMC GF2. However, I have to wait longer which is beyond my expectation, maybe because of Christmas. Maybe. Or UPS service in NZ might get some problems. All in all, good job Panasonic :)

Comments about Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera W/14-42mm Lens (Black):

I had been mulling the transition from point and shoot cameras into the more expensive (and technically demanding) arena of interchangeable lens cameras, and after careful study, I decided that the GF2 was a good compromise. It turns out that the camera indeed met and exceeded all of my expectations. I have not yet fully digested all the material one needs to go through to use this camera in the large number of manual modes, but I am happy to say that all the automatic and scene modes in camera make its use very simple to those without in depth knowledge of photography. Coupled with this ease of use, the larger sensor in this camera makes photos that are simply not possible with the traditional point and shoot cameras. It's too bad that Panasonic is retiring this camera in favour of the more automated GF3, as the weight and feature set of this camera seems ideal to me as a transition to more complex cameras. The only gripe I have with this particular camera is that the Image Stabilization is not as good as I have experienced in other cameras, but perhaps this is a limitation of the lens that comes with the camera kit.

Definitely a best buy in recent years and well worth the price. I own a Dslr and this quickly became my carry along and everyday camera. Feel so light and the pictures are actually better than what i expected. Only gripe is the 14-42 mm 3.5 F lens. Need to buy an extra lens and i will be all set. Really enjoying my impulse buy.

    Exposure errors, returned camera

Comments about Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera W/14-42mm Lens (Black):

After reading several rave reviews, I bought the Panasonic Lumix GF2. After some basic tests, I realized I have a Panasonic Point and shoot that runs circles around it.

Let me explain. When rapidly taking a series of pictures of a bright scene, the exposure system fails, ending up with
many wildly over exposed pictures. There may be a software bug with "Intelligent Exposure" and "auto bracketing".
In any case, the results are abysmal, with many over exposed shots. In " Trouble Shooting" on Pg 206, the above " Whitish Picture" is described as " Dirty lens". This is not true, as it is doubtless a software fault.

You cannot take very long time exposures of the night sky, even in " Manual" mode because the software locks you out,
telling you "Not enough light". Star trail pictures are dim by nature Panasonic; who the heck are you to tell me what to
      do with my expensive camera!

The GF2 is a waste of a very good sensor and lens due to software flaws.

I returned the GF2 for a full refund.

I had bought this camera to replace my GF-1 that someone had broken. At first i didn't like it, but I got use to it. The first thing I noticed was the remote shutter option was messing from the GF-1. I like to take timelapse photo shoots and I can no longer do this. However the picture quality does seem to come out nicer. The stereo microphones on the video is a nice new feature. Also the upgrade to 1080p is a nice video option. The 3D option I feel is a gimmick and not worth very much. All in all this camera is very worth the price and the photos are great. It has some advantages over the GF-1, but also some disadvantages. Check it out for yourself.

The functionality of the camera itself is great. I previously owned the GF1 so some of the controls take some time getting used to, such as the touch screen and no dial, but I haven't had any serious issues. The touchscreen works great and the HD Video controls are nice too. Too bad there isn't much control over the video.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera W/14-42mm Lens (Black):

I've had this camera now for a few months. [...]. I could use it straight out of the box after assembly and inserting a memory card, the battery power was full. The camera is responsive, and works great. No matter what you're doing, just point and click, it'll take the picture, no messing with changing the mode. It comes out of power saver mode quickly and can take the picture in less than a quarter second, but you must double tap the button. It'll take a picture as fast as you can click the button. The Intelligent Assist works pretty good, except maybe under extreme conditions, like in near darkness with no flash. I've only had a few instances where it refused to take a picture, so I turned the IA function off. No idea why it refused to take the picture. The battery life is decent, lasting half a day with moderate use (no flash) and leaving it in power saver mode. Two spare batteries should be sufficient for a full day's usage.I've encountered a couple of times where the lens can rotate a little too easily and stops the camera from working at all. It should lock in a little more tightly. Frustrating the first time before you figure it out.I rated it a 4, but it's more a 4+ rating, but not a full 5.
