When I purchased my Nikon d5100 from B&H I did not realize that I could only use the LCD monitor when shooting video. (The mirror needs to be in the up position so the viewfinder is non-functional.) This was a big disappointment for me as it is difficult to see the monitor in bright daylight and for the past 55 years I've used a viewfinder and as an old guy don't like to learn new ways.
But then I saw an ad for Hoodman in one of the photo magazines and ordered one from B&H. It works great but I have experience a few minor problems with my d5100. First, the "rubber band" cords work better on my d5100 if I hook one over the top in front of the pop up flash and one to a 1/4" bolt screwed into the tripod socket or around a tripod if using one. Also, the Hoodman can slide around on the LCD monitor. If the cords are pulled too tight, then the cords start to pull the rubber attaching ring out of the grove on the Hoodman.

This kit includes the basic Hoodman viewfinder, the 3x loupe and the mounting straps.

The viewfinder itself is good and with 3x loupe it's even better. Make sure to get the eye loupe if you plan to use this. It provides magnification so the image fills your field of view instead of looking like a smaller picture. It also provides a much better fit to your eye since it's contoured. This viewer has a diopter adjustment which is a must for any viewer but especially if you wear glasses. Some of the more expenses viewfinders don't or require special spacers. The zacuto viewfinder has minimal adjustment and requires spacers for eyesight.

The single biggest downfall of this is the mounting. The viewfinder itself is excellent and I bought this to avoid being forced to glue a mounting bracket on the viewfinder or having to go through a full tripod base just to hold the viewfinder. Unfortunately the expensive rubber bands require some effort to put on and take off. If you're using your camera at times with a camera strap, the strap has to be removed. It;s tough if you want to quickly remove or add the viewfinder on set. And more importantly it doesn't stay in place. The viewfinder will shift left and right and possible rotate a bit so it's easy to accidentally shoot more than you expect. Not good.

I used with a 60D and it worked fine with the exception of slipping sideways. As it is I will probably return it due to the shifting position. It should be mentioned that the Hoodman camcorder mounting strap can be used to hold this even with the 60D LCD rotated out. Great for checking focus and framing outside. Not too heavy for the LCD and as long as you don't push down on it, it's likely to be ok. However it did still shift a bit even with this mounting method.

    Comments about Hoodman Cinema Kit:

I use this item for a multitude of things...from confirming proper photographic parameters like exposure, focus, and composition. Also using it for is intended purpose...video. What a pleasure to film with your DSLR and know that your in focus, and also it creates an additional point for increased stability.
Dislikes - the mounting is fair at best.
I do like the fact that it comes with a lanyard for wearing around your neck for use when photograping, also it comes with the optional 3X magnifying eyecup.

      Comments about Hoodman Cinema Kit:

Mechanically solid body and mount, and the 3x eye cup is very nice. Big plus for me is the adjustable diopter. The strap/band attachment is a might flimsy for my liking, I fixed that with two holes in a 1/16 x 1 piece of properly bent aluminum stock cut to length and rounded off with a couple of nylon screws and wing nuts. I kept the band mount in case I loan it.

Gonna go with an hdmi small monitor instead.

Limited options for mounting eyepiece on NEX-5n. I desided I did not want a magnetic mount next to my camera, so I went with this one with its "rubberband" mount. Well, it works. Very clunky. I'm going to keep it, but mount it with graffers tape. You can buy the same thing for less without the rubber band mount. Rubber band mount would probably work well on something like a T2i where the lens was more prominate, and there was more camera body on either side of the lens. Problematic on the NEX-5n

I'm using my EOS 5D Mark II to record kids' concerts. This setup is great - it solves the focus problem with little fuss.

Other reviewers are concerned the straps can break. It would be easy to replace them with other shock cord should that happen. The design is very straightforward and reasonably robust.

I am 59 years old and as a consequence, I have old eyes. I picked up the Cinema Kit because I want to do more landscape photography and this kit has a magnified eye piece. Holy Cow! When I use this hood I can see the LCD screen well enough to manual focus! I use it on a Canon EOS 60D. It comes with the standard neck strap, a standard eye piece, and already attached, the magnifier eyepiece and elastic bands for attaching it for cinema work. So far I have just used it as configured and it works great for still camera work. For someone with old eyes, this thing is a game changer!

                          Comments about Hoodman Cinema Kit:

I do very little video, so my main purpose for the hood is to check exposure, etc. on the rear monitor in bright conditions. For this I just keep the hood on the lanyard, pick it up and position it when needed.

I have tried to set it up with the elastic bands to permanently mount it to the screen (as for video or live view) but it's not terribly stabile in this configuration.

In spite of that, I do like the unit. I have the 3x magnifier which I consider a necessity. The optics are so good that I never had realized before how much detail was available on the back screen.

The "pony-tail holder" rubber bands seem to work pretty well, and they are certainly more durable than what other reviewers claim (these are not rubber bands that would hold your newspaper together). The quality of the optics is decent, and overall I am happy to use this on my K-5 and Panasonic GH1 (actually I use it with a shoulder rig and the screen flipped out to the side). I am happy with this product for the price. The carrying pouch is nice quality too.

If you shoot outdoors in the sun or video with your camera this is an essential piece of equipment. The magnifying eye piece makes checking the image focus and quality easy. Especially when shooting outdoors or in a bright environment.

It's also a must for shooting video in live view. My vision isn't the best and trying to focus just using the 3" LCD screen on my 5DMKII is nearly impossible.

The only thing negative is that it has a tendency to move out of position while attached to the camera. Of course this can be somewhat expected with it's mounting method, but it still can be a little annoying. Though this is not a deal breaker, it's still a great product.

I used this product to shoot video at an outside concert. We all know how troublesome sunlight and glare can be on LCD's. This product not only gave me the piece of mind to see what I am shooting but also added stability which any filmmaker will tell you, an eye piece can help with. Being able to lean your eye to it gives you a bit more stabilization while handheld. I saw other reviews about the straps not doing there job. The straps kept the eye piece stayed in place and was a breeze to take on and off. Straps did not break. The diopter was also an interesting added feature. Changing the placement of the rubber eye cup was easy as well. Great if you need to change which eye your using to look through. The price is a bit steep for what it is but not enough to dissuade me from recommending this.
