I just purchased the Sigma EF-610 DG Super flash for my Nikon D300s DSLR.
So far it is working great and I'm very satisfied.
Here are a couple of my initial experiences with this flash.

(1) Before purchasing the Sigma EF-610 DG Super, I also looked into the following flashes before making my final decision: SB700, SB800, SB900 & Metz 58. The Sigma is competing with SB800/900 but with a lower price point.

(2) I intend using this flash for family photos, occasional weddings, interior/architecture and caving where there is complete darkness and using color filters.

(3) The Sigma feels solid, not flimsy at all and so far I have tried the following features:
- Supports Nikon's CLS! (Creative Lighting System)
- iTTL with flash mounted on camera: works as advertized
- Ceiling Bounce, no problems from 10-20mm with an ultra wide angle lens. Not tested yet with my 70-200mm lens yet but not too concerned about that range either.
- Wireless with D300s build in flash as commander: works great and allows creative shots! I tried this flash combined with a 10-20mm Sigma lens set at 10mm. When you pull out the build in flash diffuser, the flash automatically shows '17mm' mode in the lcd display but I didn't see dark edges or significant light falloff in the image. Pretty good!
- Multiple flashes in one shot worked as advertized
- Over/under expose settings are easy to set up
- Full manual control works great
- The LCD screen is very well readable and has a dedicated 'light' button which will give a nice green illumination for 8 seconds.
- Dedicated 'mode' button to select iTTL, manual mode, wireless mode, multiple flash mode etc
- Wireless mode easy to set up.
- I was looking for accessories which seem hard to find initially but I was informed that the OM-C omni bounce should fit.
- Also ordered a set of generic color photogels that can be attached to the flashhead. These are the only two accessoiries that I will need.

(4) I'm using it together with 4 eneloop NiMh batteries and recycle time between shots is generally within 1-4 seconds, depending on whether you used a full 100% flash or just a fraction of the output (depending on light needed in iTTL mode).

(5) I compared shots with my camera pop-up flash and the Sigma outclasses the pop-up flash - as expected. Light is more consistent, allows the use of an ultra wide angle lens and lights up interior spaces much farther so you don't have the 'dark' background.
So even as a direct replacement for your occasional family shots, I believe it is worth while the investment.

So far I have not found any issues. The flash also comes with a stand for wireless mode and a nice pouch. If you are on a budget but would like SB800/900 similar features and performance, this looks like a good alternative at a lower price point. Note: the flash does not come with any other accessories besides the pouch and stand.

Cheers,

Peter

On Sony Alpha55,works fine...wish connection to camera was more secure.
I'm just starting to explore the capabilities of this Flash...my old Vivitar 283 was much simpler to operate...this Sigma can do a lot more but the menu based controls are a bit frustrating...but thatll improve with time and use.
This Sigma has huge potential...extremely vesatile.

Comments about Sigma EF610 DG Super Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

Although I am not quite a professional photographer I need my pictures to be professional quality. I take food photos for my blog and high resolution photos for a print magazine that I write for. The addition of the Sigma EF610 Super Flash for Canon has made quite a difference in the quality of lighting. I am thrilled. I had read many positive reviews which convinced me it was a great value. A couple of negatives that I read were that the battery cover seemed flimsy. I don't agree at all. Another reviewer said it didn't lock on the camera, but that is absolutely false. With the simple turn of a dial the light is securely attached to my Canon DSLR.

Comments about Sigma EF610 DG Super Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

While this flash can act as a ttl master using IR triggering, (4 chan, 3 groups) using Canon's protocol, it won't allow the same level of control like a Canon flash would from the camera menu (5dmkkII). The control screen is a bit odd but learnable. Some of the buttons are labeled in red ink on black plastic, which is all but unreadable in low light. The battery door will pop off at the wrong angle and it took me awhile to get the right angle to get it to pop back in. Plastic foot.

The upside is that it's a good, reasonably solid flash. The exposure seems consistent, and it recycles pretty quickly on NiMH cells. The zoom is way quieter then my Nissin 622MkII. Has a number of higher end features.

I'm a little undecided about recommending this. Nothing really wrong, but more than a few annoyances. Lots of bang for the buck though.

Comments about Sigma EF610 DG Super Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

Great flash, easy to use and does everything it claims it does. I wish I hadn't bought my Canon 430EX-II because this flash will do more with more power and less cost. The buttons are much easier to press then the 430EX-II also.It works flawlessly with my Canon 60D's pop-up as the master, triggering the 430 EX-II and SIGMA EF-610 DG Super both acting as slaves. Main & Fill. The built quality is very good, not quite as good as Canon but very good none-the-less. My only gripe with the flash is "red" lettering on some of the upper row button is near impossible to read, SIGMA should have stuck with the white lettering through out. That is very easy to read. One more thing: B&H is a terrific company to deal with. I've placed 4 orders with them now to ship into Canada and they get it right and take care of the duty correctly everytime. Wish all companies were as easy to deal with as B&H. A true model many Corporations could learn from. Thanks B&H!

Comments about Sigma EF610 DG Super Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

Sigma really put out a great flash that rivals the Canon 580EX II. Amazing power and nice firm housing! I have yet to take it into the field but for portraits it works great! The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars is because of the plastic hot shoe. Great that it helps keep it light but a metal one would have made this flash a 5 star in my book!!

60% more power than a vivitar 285. Tilt and rotating head are helpfull. I miss not having a sync cord. My review would be 5 star IF it had a sync cord.
