I'm a videojournalist. I've used the old Rode shotgun mic on DSLR shooting before (I shoot with a 5D Mk II).

Here's what's good:
- You can bump the preamp to +20 which helps you not have to crank in the in-camera audio, which is low-quality.
- You can use a high-pass filter if you're handholding with a lens that has IS turned on (24-105, for example) because otherwise you'd hear this horrible background sound. So it takes care of that really well.
- I set the camera on auto-levels with this and it does just fine.
- It's compact and wayyy smaller.

Here's what's bad:
- The little rubber bands that suspend the shotgun mic come off a LOT. They were falling off a few minutes right after I got it. That's annoying.
- I just wish it was sturdier. I don't feel like I can throw it in my bag and high-tail it out of there; I've got to make sure that it's the last thing in, placed on top, and it won't be rubbing off anything when I pull it out of the bag otherwise it's going to have the bands snap off.
- I might have to gaff tape the bands on, but I don't know how well that will work + it's just obnoxious.

So overall, good microphone, and I don't know if I'd want the huge megaprofile of the older version or the newer one coming out (VideoMicPro HD). It's discreet which is a HUGE plus of using a DSLR to shoot video. But you just gotta noodle with it from time to time to fix those dern-tootin' rubber bands!!!

Yes, this is a great microphone once you figure it out, especially the trick in getting the battery cover off and snapping it back on. What's worse, is the battery cover isn't attached by a small strap to the body of the electronics compartment of the mic. It's only a matter of (short) time that I'm struggling with removing or replacing the battery cover that it will fall and I'll lose it. Once you lose the battery compartment cover, that's it. The battery won't stay in its place, no contact, no power, no mic. Dead duck. This is a deal-killer for me.No matter how good the mic is, if you're on a shoot and somehow you lose the battery cover, you have no mic, and for most of us, that means no sound, or really bad sound. If you're shooting mission critical assignments, like a wedding, and you rely on this mic, you're in a world of hurt if you drop the battery cover and can't find it, such as under a table in the reception, or similar situation. If that weren't enough, the little rubber bands holding the mic body to the mounting bracket are very loose, and come off almost regularly as you try to fiddle with the body to change the battery. It's really poor design, and Rode should have figured out this is not a sustainable design for reliable field use. I ended up glueing the rubber bands to the body so they didn't keep coming off. You put one side on, and other side comes off. Geez, what a pain.If you plan to use the mic where a mixer is involved, as do I, you'll need an extension cable or two, because the short cord from the mic is long enough to reach the camera only if it's mounted on the hot shoe directly above the camera. If you plan to use an "L" bracket, you'll need an extension cable to reach the camera input jack. The cord is NOT coiled, which would have been nice. It just hangs there. The switches on the back of the body give good control over mic functions, but they're really small, and tight to operate, so you'll jiggle the mic quite a bit when you engage the switches. Sometimes, you'll go all the way to the right when you're trying to get to the center position, so more fiddling is involved. These might seem petty, but when you're under pressure to get the right shot, the last thing you need is to wonder if the rubber bands are loose on the suspension, or having to change the battery in mid-shoot, then losing the battery cover on the floor, and looking around for it. Heaven help us if we lose the battery cover in a dark room or outside on grass, or other equally distasterous situation.[...] So far, there is no fix for this in the pipeline that I know of, and there's no provision for purchasing extra battery covers. I'll update this review if I find out anything to the contrary. In the mean time, just keep in mind that if you lose the battery cover, you're a dead duck. If you want to take that chance, I'll sell you mine at a discount!Hope this helps.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

I've been looking for a great compact shotgun microphone to be used in producing videos with my iPad. The RODE VideoMic Pro's audio quality and volume is the best I've found so far. When used at the 0db setting and standing about 4ft away, the audio was acceptable, when I boosted it to the +20db gain, the volume was the loudest of any other compacts I tried. If you're using this with a mobile device you'll need the RODE SC4 TRS to TRRS Adaptor for around $. I still prefer the sound of the bigger XLR shotgun microphones, but this is a solid alternative.

i use this to capture interview's and nat sound for video projects i use with my Canon t3I. first the quality of the auio is great even when attached to the awful DSLR audio input. you just have to realy tweak the manual audio to a low seting and push the mic hard at +20.

realy if you want good sound get a side recoreder but for documenting as a one man band and run and gun into the T3i you can realy capture what is needed. read up and watch videos on how to tweak this mic and you DSLR to get best sound.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

My main reason for buying this mic was to get away from hearing the autofocus of my lens on the audio portion of the recording. This mic has too wide of a pickup pattern and I can still clearly hear the autofocus of the lens. Other than that, it is well made, offers enough control over the signal level, and gives clean sound quality.

The plastic construction is meant to keep weight down, and it does. Unfortunately, the plastic battery door was extremely frustrating to operate. It took many minutes of maneuvering to get into place correctly. Once closed, it did not have a really positive feel to assure that it was properly latched.

I have used this in breezy situations, at trade shows, in offices, in warehouses, and have just been amazed at the results. Great little shotgun mic. Also, the battery life has been phenomenal. Also, when doing recording from my office on my computer I have used this microphone with great results.

Works just fine as long as you remember to turn the mic on. So far I have recorded two videos with my Canon (and the Rode mic) thinking all I had to do was press record on the camera. No sound unless you also turn on the mic powered by its own 9v battery. Once the mic is on it works great! ;^) Oh, one more thing. It will not mount to a standard tripod like I was hoping it would because the threads are not the same as those found on most cameras/tripods, thus you will need some sort of adapter to mount the mic away from the camera on its own tripod, etc. That was disappointing and the main reason I bought the 10' extension cord along with the mic.

I bought and used this mic in a recording studio to get b-roll of an artist during a recording session. It was really handy being able to adjust gain on the mic itself depending on how loud the music was. I also like that it runs off 9v battery as opposed to AA or AAA which a lot of hot shoe mounted mics do. So far so good, I really like the mic and can't wait to put it to other uses.

I only gave it 4 stars as I'll have to return the mic. I noticed that it produced a hiss that is clearly audible at 16khz. I was able to eliminate this sound in FCPX but didn't want to have to do this extra work everytime I'm editing audio from this mic. I actually compared it to the same exact mic from a friend and the other one works just perfectly. Bad luck, defective item. Returning it soon and hoping it'll be OK next time.
Thanks B&H for the amazing customer service, as always.

I have just started using my Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 for professional video.
My teacher had recommended that I buy this RODE mic, and boy am I happy I invested in this one.
There are a lot of options to go for cheaper, but after deciding to invest in a better mic - I am not looking back!
I am extremely satisfied with this product!

I bought this Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun microphone to go with my Sony a7s since I travel a lot shooting interviews etc. I needed something that was light and compact. This mics quality is amazing for the price!

I had heard great things about this product and I never really trusted them until I got it in the mail! Absolutely fantastic microphone. Records a great sound for run and gun and low budget indie film makers. Small enough to fit into my small travel case along with my camera! If you're having second thought about this product, disregard them and buy this mic. NOW.

This a great little mic for documentary work and very easy to use.

It sits on top of the camera nicely in the hot shoe mount but can also be used on different mounts such as a boom. (with adaptor not included)

An XLR input option would complete this mic.
