I'm a videojournalist. I've used the old Rode shotgun mic on DSLR shooting before (I shoot with a 5D Mk II).

Here's what's good:
- You can bump the preamp to +20 which helps you not have to crank in the in-camera audio, which is low-quality.
- You can use a high-pass filter if you're handholding with a lens that has IS turned on (24-105, for example) because otherwise you'd hear this horrible background sound. So it takes care of that really well.
- I set the camera on auto-levels with this and it does just fine.
- It's compact and wayyy smaller.

Here's what's bad:
- The little rubber bands that suspend the shotgun mic come off a LOT. They were falling off a few minutes right after I got it. That's annoying.
- I just wish it was sturdier. I don't feel like I can throw it in my bag and high-tail it out of there; I've got to make sure that it's the last thing in, placed on top, and it won't be rubbing off anything when I pull it out of the bag otherwise it's going to have the bands snap off.
- I might have to gaff tape the bands on, but I don't know how well that will work + it's just obnoxious.

So overall, good microphone, and I don't know if I'd want the huge megaprofile of the older version or the newer one coming out (VideoMicPro HD). It's discreet which is a HUGE plus of using a DSLR to shoot video. But you just gotta noodle with it from time to time to fix those dern-tootin' rubber bands!!!

I was very happy when I got the VideoMic Pro from Rode. I liked the settings (on/off/high pass filter and 10 db/0 db/+20 db, plus the LED-light which indicates the status of the battery.

I use the mic with a Panasonic GH2, one of the few DSRL-cameras with options for manually adjusting the volume of the onboard/external mic.

The onboard stereo-mic actually works surprisingly well, but I was quite sure that VideoMic Pro would be A LOT better. Well, when shooting inside and in quiet, non-windy situations it works very well. Have nothing to complain about in such conditions.

BUT, when shooting outside in windy conditions, VideoMic Pro does not work at all. It picks up the rumbling of the wind in any case, no matter how it is adjusted. I used the VideoMic Pro Deadcat for windprotection, tried to turn the high pass filter on, and set the volume to -10 db, OR I tried to turn the high pass filter OFF, set the camera mic level to 1, and VideoMic Pro level to 0 db, but it doesnt make a difference how you adjust it.

The mic is so sensitive it picks up EVERYTHING, even the smallest rumbling noise from the wind. If you use the deadcat, its a little bit better, but still way too much windsound.

My old camcorder, a Sony PDX10, had a Sony mono shotgun mic attached. Nothing fancy at all, but with a deadcat on, you had NO problems with wind rumbling or noise. I shoot a lot of scenes outdoors, in the nature, and need a mic that functions in windy surroundings. Unfortunately VideoMic Pro does not work very well outdoors, in windy situations.

Its good for indoors shooting, or in conditions outside WITHOUT any wind.

I dont know if my VideoMic Pro have some problems that nobody else has, cause I hear only positive things about this mic, but have you guys tried to test it in windy surroundings?

Well, I cannot work with this mic, have to find something else that works in windy conditions in nature as well as indoors.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

It is what you expect when you buy it. Great sound quality, wind reduction, voice singularity. The difference between this and a camera's built in mic is night and day. For the price, it's a steal.

I use this for DSLR video projects. I know it is not super high end equipment but it feels like it is going to fall apart every time you change the battery. Any it still uses rubber bands.

    Best travel mic ever

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

I took this to a commissioned photo shoot and we impromptu did some video with it. And every sound bite came out beautiful. I do suggest looking at the different options and running test sound bites with your camera on location. This way you don't get flat sound.

It works. What else is there to say?

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

This microphone has been working pretty good. I used it for my steel drum concert and it sounded really good. It is really good considering it's the first mic I've bought for my GH-3. Just make sure that you don't put your earbuds near it while plugged in or else it will freak out.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

I had recently bought a bigger, more bulky, less satisfying mic. Then I got the rode video mic pro. It has been nothing but delightful. I love when equipment gets out of they way of me creating. And that is definitely what this mic is doing. 10/10, will buy again.

Overall impress with mic. I use it on my cannon 70d and 5d mark 3. Great quality and with a dead cat filter it's great outdoors. Def worth it for the price. If you are just starting out and can afford it def go for it.

I love using this mic going DIRECTLY to DSLR. Turn it to +20db and then turn the DSLR audio down real low. Great, clean, usable audio every time. I actually prefer this audio over my rode NTG2 going into a tascam. So simple and easy. Highly recommended.

Great First Mic for my mirrorless A7RII

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

I research a lot trying to find something good for not to much money to start . I'm a professional photographer, but I want to try some basic videos for personal projects first and I think this one could be a good start. I also have a lavalier mic for documental or testimonials.
The build quality is just good. Plastic and feels not rugged but ok for my needs. very fragile cable looks but I did not heard about any problem with cable. I just try it and the sound quality is good. Again I'm new on video so I don't have to much to compare. Better have a 9V spare battery with you and you are ready to go.
I also make some test using that mic with a pole for a 3 person group talking and sounds just fine. Not great. Small, portable and one of several options. very difficult to figure out which one is better without personal test. I just base my decision on internet reviews.
Just I though for the money.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

I saved up for a very long time to get this microphone and I'm so glad I did. It's perfect for shooting video on DSLR and has great sound quality. You may have to lower or higher the mic sensitivity directly on your camera to get a nice sound, but it doesn't take very long to find the optimal setting.

I use this with my 5D MarkIII as a replacement for the Azden SMX10. It's great! The sound quality and power are excellent. The little green light reminds you to turn it off when you're done. My only con is that it's flown of the camera hot shoe a few times even though I thought I tightened it all the way.
