I'm a videojournalist. I've used the old Rode shotgun mic on DSLR shooting before (I shoot with a 5D Mk II).

Here's what's good:
- You can bump the preamp to +20 which helps you not have to crank in the in-camera audio, which is low-quality.
- You can use a high-pass filter if you're handholding with a lens that has IS turned on (24-105, for example) because otherwise you'd hear this horrible background sound. So it takes care of that really well.
- I set the camera on auto-levels with this and it does just fine.
- It's compact and wayyy smaller.

Here's what's bad:
- The little rubber bands that suspend the shotgun mic come off a LOT. They were falling off a few minutes right after I got it. That's annoying.
- I just wish it was sturdier. I don't feel like I can throw it in my bag and high-tail it out of there; I've got to make sure that it's the last thing in, placed on top, and it won't be rubbing off anything when I pull it out of the bag otherwise it's going to have the bands snap off.
- I might have to gaff tape the bands on, but I don't know how well that will work + it's just obnoxious.

So overall, good microphone, and I don't know if I'd want the huge megaprofile of the older version or the newer one coming out (VideoMicPro HD). It's discreet which is a HUGE plus of using a DSLR to shoot video. But you just gotta noodle with it from time to time to fix those dern-tootin' rubber bands!!!

I was very happy when I got the VideoMic Pro from Rode. I liked the settings (on/off/high pass filter and 10 db/0 db/+20 db, plus the LED-light which indicates the status of the battery.

I use the mic with a Panasonic GH2, one of the few DSRL-cameras with options for manually adjusting the volume of the onboard/external mic.

The onboard stereo-mic actually works surprisingly well, but I was quite sure that VideoMic Pro would be A LOT better. Well, when shooting inside and in quiet, non-windy situations it works very well. Have nothing to complain about in such conditions.

BUT, when shooting outside in windy conditions, VideoMic Pro does not work at all. It picks up the rumbling of the wind in any case, no matter how it is adjusted. I used the VideoMic Pro Deadcat for windprotection, tried to turn the high pass filter on, and set the volume to -10 db, OR I tried to turn the high pass filter OFF, set the camera mic level to 1, and VideoMic Pro level to 0 db, but it doesnt make a difference how you adjust it.

The mic is so sensitive it picks up EVERYTHING, even the smallest rumbling noise from the wind. If you use the deadcat, its a little bit better, but still way too much windsound.

My old camcorder, a Sony PDX10, had a Sony mono shotgun mic attached. Nothing fancy at all, but with a deadcat on, you had NO problems with wind rumbling or noise. I shoot a lot of scenes outdoors, in the nature, and need a mic that functions in windy surroundings. Unfortunately VideoMic Pro does not work very well outdoors, in windy situations.

Its good for indoors shooting, or in conditions outside WITHOUT any wind.

I dont know if my VideoMic Pro have some problems that nobody else has, cause I hear only positive things about this mic, but have you guys tried to test it in windy surroundings?

Well, I cannot work with this mic, have to find something else that works in windy conditions in nature as well as indoors.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

I really love this mic. i use it for on the go shooting that requires minimal sound. The sound is SO much better than the on camera sound. Its also built really well. I hear a lot of complaints on reviews about the little ruber bands it comes with, but they dont bother me. I run with the thing and it bounces naturally with out anything falling off. Its just right for my taste.

The microphone sounds fantastic, but it uses cheap, flimsy bands that snap easily. I can no longer source replacements - you won't find them on the B&H site. My mic is now effectively useless as it rattles whenever it is moving.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

This was a great addition to my video needs and has been very reliable thus far. I'm not recording interviews or dialogue with this, but for a basic shotgun mic, this has been very good in terms of capturing clean natural sound. My only recommendation for use with dslr cameras, is to make sure you are manually adjusting the sound levels recorded in camera by setting the sound level in cam very low, and set the switch on rode mic to +20dB. I've gotten the best results using it this way, but be sure to always monitor the output levels.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone:

The Rode VideoMic that came with my Sony a7s was broken when I received it. Upon using it for the first time I realized that the on/off switch was not working. It would slide to on and the green light would appear but after I took my finger off it, the light would go off and would no longer record. After switching it on and off a few times, the button fell off! The second Rode video mic I have makes a loud clattering sound when I'm recording during walking. It's difficult to put together and get the battery in and out. Overall it's a cheap poor quality mic.

I took this to a commissioned photo shoot and we impromptu did some video with it. And every sound bite came out beautiful. I do suggest looking at the different options and running test sound bites with your camera on location. This way you don't get flat sound.

This microphone has been working pretty good. I used it for my steel drum concert and it sounded really good. It is really good considering it's the first mic I've bought for my GH-3. Just make sure that you don't put your earbuds near it while plugged in or else it will freak out.

I research a lot trying to find something good for not to much money to start . I'm a professional photographer, but I want to try some basic videos for personal projects first and I think this one could be a good start. I also have a lavalier mic for documental or testimonials.
The build quality is just good. Plastic and feels not rugged but ok for my needs. very fragile cable looks but I did not heard about any problem with cable. I just try it and the sound quality is good. Again I'm new on video so I don't have to much to compare. Better have a 9V spare battery with you and you are ready to go.
I also make some test using that mic with a pole for a 3 person group talking and sounds just fine. Not great. Small, portable and one of several options. very difficult to figure out which one is better without personal test. I just base my decision on internet reviews.
Just I though for the money.

You may have to lower or higher the mic sensitivity directly on your camera to get a nice sound, but it doesn't take very long to find the optimal setting.
