I'm a videojournalist. I've used the old Rode shotgun mic on DSLR shooting before (I shoot with a 5D Mk II).

Here's what's good:
- You can bump the preamp to +20 which helps you not have to crank in the in-camera audio, which is low-quality.
- You can use a high-pass filter if you're handholding with a lens that has IS turned on (24-105, for example) because otherwise you'd hear this horrible background sound. So it takes care of that really well.
- I set the camera on auto-levels with this and it does just fine.
- It's compact and wayyy smaller.

Here's what's bad:
- The little rubber bands that suspend the shotgun mic come off a LOT. They were falling off a few minutes right after I got it. That's annoying.
- I just wish it was sturdier. I don't feel like I can throw it in my bag and high-tail it out of there; I've got to make sure that it's the last thing in, placed on top, and it won't be rubbing off anything when I pull it out of the bag otherwise it's going to have the bands snap off.
- I might have to gaff tape the bands on, but I don't know how well that will work + it's just obnoxious.

So overall, good microphone, and I don't know if I'd want the huge megaprofile of the older version or the newer one coming out (VideoMicPro HD). It's discreet which is a HUGE plus of using a DSLR to shoot video. But you just gotta noodle with it from time to time to fix those dern-tootin' rubber bands!!!

Yes, this is a great microphone once you figure it out, especially the trick in getting the battery cover off and snapping it back on. What's worse, is the battery cover isn't attached by a small strap to the body of the electronics compartment of the mic. It's only a matter of (short) time that I'm struggling with removing or replacing the battery cover that it will fall and I'll lose it. Once you lose the battery compartment cover, that's it. The battery won't stay in its place, no contact, no power, no mic. Dead duck. This is a deal-killer for me.No matter how good the mic is, if you're on a shoot and somehow you lose the battery cover, you have no mic, and for most of us, that means no sound, or really bad sound. If you're shooting mission critical assignments, like a wedding, and you rely on this mic, you're in a world of hurt if you drop the battery cover and can't find it, such as under a table in the reception, or similar situation. If that weren't enough, the little rubber bands holding the mic body to the mounting bracket are very loose, and come off almost regularly as you try to fiddle with the body to change the battery. It's really poor design, and Rode should have figured out this is not a sustainable design for reliable field use. I ended up glueing the rubber bands to the body so they didn't keep coming off. You put one side on, and other side comes off. Geez, what a pain.If you plan to use the mic where a mixer is involved, as do I, you'll need an extension cable or two, because the short cord from the mic is long enough to reach the camera only if it's mounted on the hot shoe directly above the camera. If you plan to use an "L" bracket, you'll need an extension cable to reach the camera input jack. The cord is NOT coiled, which would have been nice. It just hangs there. The switches on the back of the body give good control over mic functions, but they're really small, and tight to operate, so you'll jiggle the mic quite a bit when you engage the switches. Sometimes, you'll go all the way to the right when you're trying to get to the center position, so more fiddling is involved. These might seem petty, but when you're under pressure to get the right shot, the last thing you need is to wonder if the rubber bands are loose on the suspension, or having to change the battery in mid-shoot, then losing the battery cover on the floor, and looking around for it. Heaven help us if we lose the battery cover in a dark room or outside on grass, or other equally distasterous situation.[...] So far, there is no fix for this in the pipeline that I know of, and there's no provision for purchasing extra battery covers. I'll update this review if I find out anything to the contrary. In the mean time, just keep in mind that if you lose the battery cover, you're a dead duck. If you want to take that chance, I'll sell you mine at a discount!Hope this helps.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

This mic will nearly fly out of your hands the first time you take it out of the box - it's that light. Also, get a battery before you try hooking it up to your camera. But since I got this mic as part of a bundle with my Canon 6D SLR, I'm pretty happy with its performance. I read other reviews for shotgun mics, and RODE seems to be a good brand for the indie filmmaker just starting out. I'll be interested to see how this mic works out for me!

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

This is a good shotgun mic. The mic is suspended to reduce movement noise - which helps a lot when you have to make adjustments on the camera. The only downside is that it is VERY hard to install the battery in the mic.

Good Audio + Bad Design = Bad Sound

        Best Uses

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

I used this as a run and gun camera-mounted mic with a DSLR. I was making a documentary about senior citizens, and this mic couldn't keep up. Though the sound capture quality was acceptable for the price-point the design made it much more problematic. The mic would often loose contact with it's sling and bang against the camera. This made all the related audio unusable. Getting it back onto the suspension setup (which is tiny) was nearly impossible, even with my small, lady-hands. Finally, as noted in other reviews, the battery is nearly impossible to change. Which is an essential component of shooting for any length of time. For my needs (on-the-go shooting) it was unreliable, problematic, distracting and ultimately produced unacceptable sound because of it banging around against the camera.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

I have been doing Broadcast Journalism for a couple years now, and this is something that I could really use. What caught my eye with this product was the price and the reviews this mic had. This mic is a staple item for videographers; its a must. It has clear and crisp audio, has a good range, and is light and portable. The only main issue I had with this, and the only reason why I'm giving it a 3-star review, is because it is a very fragile mic. I had this mic on my 6D mounted to a Glidecam HD2000 and I bumped into a mannequin at a Macy's and the mic broke off the hotshoe mount. The screws that holds this mic in place are tiny and sensitive. And when I say that this mic is fragile, I mean it. The first time I ordered this mic, it came broken in the box; the hotshoe mount was broken. I kindly asked for a replacement and B&H gladly assisted me with the issue. The second time around was when I accidentally bumped into a mannequin. I did end up asking for a refund.I am currently using a Zoom H6 and its not the same. I really wish that I had just kept the VideoMic Pro.

In this case I was recording my kid's marching band on the field as well as close up on the bleachers. You do have to play with your camera's setting (I set the camera's to lowest without turning it off).

The mic is compact, which is good, but it is so compact that it won't fit into the shoe mount on my Panasonic HS700 camcorder. While it does fit my Panasonic V700, it leaves little room for my finger to operate the ZOOM lever or Photo button. So I had to buy a Rycote hot shoe adapter, RYHSA for $. If you buy the mic I suggest you also buy the Rycote adapter.

This mic is an excellent place to start for someone who's still new to filmmaking. It sounds great, it's light, easy to use and I love the +20db option. And for those complaining about the bands holding it in place, they work fine and do a good job reducing shock

I use this mic as a secondary mic or if I'm not able to use my NTG2. This mic holds up very well for a non xlr setup. If you are looking for a mic to hook directly into your camera and not looking to burn through your pocket, this mic is the best option. (I use this with my GH4)

i know this kind of mic won't be any miracle and i understand dslr sound is terrible by nature; but i expected it to be a little less hissy.

design is also quite poor, battery compartment is horrible to open, shock mount suspension is extremely fragile.

I used this last week, a few days after is arrived. It sounded great! The mic remained on the camera and I set it to +20dB, and the camera audio lower than I might ordinarily have it set. It was perfect. The shoot was outside with some extraneous noise and a little wind. The mic did well isolating isolating the subject who was speaking.

Two of my only concerns is that it's made of plastic, and the cable seems a little flimsy. We'll see how that works - maybe it will be fine.

I used this mic for a product demonstration video. The sound was crisp and clear, and the High Pass filter was very effective at knocking out the refrigerator hum in the background. It is plug and play and easy to use, just remember to use headphones while you are recording so you know when you forget to turn it on!
