Husband, Thomas made the purchase of the Tamron AF18-270 lens after I decided it was the birthday gift of choice based on the recommendation of a friend whose own photography is part of a professional portfolio. I am a Public Affairs Officer for the Civil Air Patrol and the lens came just in time to photograph 8 days of the first of two Regional August Glider Academies held in Vermont. The previous 3 years required switching of lenses from 18-55 to 55-200 zoom to get the effects I wanted on the ground then in the air, losing great shots and angles in the process. This lens is a keeper. Photos sent out have received rave reviews for composition. I have noted some slow focusing intermittently, but not enough of a problem reduce my enthusiasm for this product. It SOARS!

I bought a Nikon D5300 to replace an aging Nikon D80. I shoot wildlife with the D80 and always use a Nikon 70-300 lens, so I put the old lens on the new, lightweight body. The images from this combination were superb (all things considered at this price point), but the heavy lens seemed unbalanced on the new body, so I decided to get a lighter long lens. The Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF got a number of pretty good reviews, so I bought one and swapped out the 70-300.

What a difference a lens makes! While the Tamron is compact, light, and feels nicely balanced on the D5300, I am very disappointed with the image quality. At the long end (towards 270mm), the Tamron has trouble keeping focus. The Piezo Drive ultrasonic autofocus motor often has trouble as it bounces back and forth in and out of focus, even when I am shooting on something rather large (like a goose on a pond at 25 feet). Shooting with the piezo vibrating results in mostly out of focus images. Focusing on birds in trees produces a similar problem, but focusing through branches always causes problems.

At wide angle (towards the 18mm end), the lens takes very nice photos without any focus issues, but I have gotten some vignetting, but it isn't bad.

When I finally get the photos on the computer, the vast majority of telephoto shots suffer from soft focus and grainy texture (even with aperture and ISO adjusted). A few photos come out very well, as well as with the old 70-300, but if I can't count on getting good focus on something, what is the point of the lens?

Tomorrow I'm going back to a different duck pond where I know the lighting will be bright and the ducks habituated to humans. I'll try the two lenses, one after the other, and make a decision about keeping the Tamron lens. From what I've seen so far, I think this lens is going back to B&H.

For people who mostly want to take shots towards the 18mm end of the range, this lens might be good enough for a few shots at 270mm, but if the intended use primarily is towards the long end, I'd skip this lens.

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

I love my new Tamron 18-270mm lens. It gives me the versatility to use it for whatever I am shooting. This morning I stepped out on my patio and there was a red shoulder hawk sitting a tree near my back fence. He was being "dive bombed" by smaller birds whose nest was close. At 270mm, I got several great shots. That is in contrast to being able to take pictures of my 11 month old granddaughter doing what she ought not. Same lens. This is my third Tamron lens and they have all been the best quality, most versatile, and easiest to use for the time they were bought. I have used them on Nikon N70's, D70's and now a D7000. Love 'em!

    Wide or telephoto

    By Isaac

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

This the the second lens like this I purchased. I bought the original and after about 6 years of hard use and a few good falls it locked up on me. I was so in love with the wide and telephoto capability I just had to replace it. There is significant bbl distortion. And it's not the sharpest lens on the market but for the price it's a powerhouse. I can shoot indoors and walk outside and shoot hummingbirds at the feeder. It has an almost silent motor and offers vibration controll. This is a do it all lens. sharpness, color clarity and focal length.. For half the price or the name brand lens.

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

I bought this for an upcoming trip to Alaska. I like the fact that it is short in length and very lightweight. The wde angle in mid-range is excellent and the Max zoom is perfectly fine if you are shooting with some decent light. Excellent lens choice if you don,t want to drag along 2-3 lenses.

The standard lens that Nikon includes with their DSLRs is Ok but I wanted a zoom lens to get even better shots. Nikon has a huge selection of excellent quality zoom lens but their prices made my head spin. Last year I spent some time with my brother-in-law and was very impressed with the quality of his Tamron 18-270 zoom lens. I highly recommend this lens for people who, like me want a great lens at a great price.

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

This is a good general purpose lens for traveling light with a single lens that covers a wide range of focal lengths. It is not a perfect lens for every use, but it's perfect for its intended use, which is general photography with light gear. The images are sharp and have good contrast. The image stabilization works very well. This lens will not replace my prime lenses or constant aperture zooms, but I'll be comfortable taking it on a trip as my main lens along with a 50mm F1.8 prime.AF speed is okay with the Nikon D300, but not great. Since the lens is for a DX size sensor, I didn't try it on the D800.

There are times that a blurry focus occurs but that is common with other lenses also. Please do not compare a $ product to a $ one. This lens for the money does a great job. I believe Tamron does a wonderful job. I am now waiting to receive the Tamron 150-600mm.

This Lens works great in outdoor settings and is a good all in one lens. The autofocus does a decent job and is fairly quiet and fast. However occasionally during a drastic change in zoom the focus drive will make a high pitched squeal sound. Although it is good as an all in one purpose lens it does not do well in indoor low light settings. You will need an external flash and a light dispersion element for your external flash and an editing software.

Purchased this lens after much delay when the rebate was increased so I could use it as a walk-around lens on my Nikon D5000 during a trip to Alaska. It's not pro quality - and I wouldn't expect it to be at the price - but it served me well on the trip. I was able to shoot wide angle landscapes as well as zoom in on distant wildlife and geographic features without having to change lenses, which is the whole point of a lens like this.
Expect some vignetting when using the zoom - especially when using any sort of screw-on filter. I've noticed much less color fringing than with some other off-brand lenses (my older Tamron 70-300 is especially bad).
All-in-all a good lens for the price. Not sure I'd do any portrait or wedding photos with it, but for personal use and vacations, it's perfectly acceptable.

I really questioned this product since I have always used Nikon products. I wanted to have an all-in-one lens without having to constantly change lens. The price was inticing compared to the same in Nikon. After receiving the product I used it for the first time for a one year old birthday party using the wide angle and zooming in for action shots. I was truly satisified with the results. Gtreat not having to change lens and loose time in getting the shots I want. Tamron has developed a great product and giving 6 years warranty is also something to think about plus a rebate to help the purchase. Glad I dealth with B H Photo to explaing this great product before the purchase. Their input was a great help and support.
As yet can't say anything negative about the product.

We love the Tamron AF18-270 PZD AF lens. My daughter mounted it on her Nikon D3100 and has enjoyed taking pictures even more. The operation is smooth and quiet and the 15x telephoto is a great improvement over the original Nikon lens. With this lens she doesn't have to switch the lens back and forth as she would have with the Nikkor 55-300.

I plan to use this lens for traveling due to its light weight and wide zoom range. These are two aspects that I like a lot. The price was also reasonable compared to the Nikon lens, and about half the weight.

However, I notice at 18mm focal lengths, I've been getting vignetting in the corners, which is rather annoying. Perhaps it's just not meant to be used at its low focal length end. The high end at 270mm seems to be okay.
