Husband, Thomas made the purchase of the Tamron AF18-270 lens after I decided it was the birthday gift of choice based on the recommendation of a friend whose own photography is part of a professional portfolio. I am a Public Affairs Officer for the Civil Air Patrol and the lens came just in time to photograph 8 days of the first of two Regional August Glider Academies held in Vermont. The previous 3 years required switching of lenses from 18-55 to 55-200 zoom to get the effects I wanted on the ground then in the air, losing great shots and angles in the process. This lens is a keeper. Photos sent out have received rave reviews for composition. I have noted some slow focusing intermittently, but not enough of a problem reduce my enthusiasm for this product. It SOARS!

I bought a Nikon D5300 to replace an aging Nikon D80. I shoot wildlife with the D80 and always use a Nikon 70-300 lens, so I put the old lens on the new, lightweight body. The images from this combination were superb (all things considered at this price point), but the heavy lens seemed unbalanced on the new body, so I decided to get a lighter long lens. The Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF got a number of pretty good reviews, so I bought one and swapped out the 70-300.

What a difference a lens makes! While the Tamron is compact, light, and feels nicely balanced on the D5300, I am very disappointed with the image quality. At the long end (towards 270mm), the Tamron has trouble keeping focus. The Piezo Drive ultrasonic autofocus motor often has trouble as it bounces back and forth in and out of focus, even when I am shooting on something rather large (like a goose on a pond at 25 feet). Shooting with the piezo vibrating results in mostly out of focus images. Focusing on birds in trees produces a similar problem, but focusing through branches always causes problems.

At wide angle (towards the 18mm end), the lens takes very nice photos without any focus issues, but I have gotten some vignetting, but it isn't bad.

When I finally get the photos on the computer, the vast majority of telephoto shots suffer from soft focus and grainy texture (even with aperture and ISO adjusted). A few photos come out very well, as well as with the old 70-300, but if I can't count on getting good focus on something, what is the point of the lens?

Tomorrow I'm going back to a different duck pond where I know the lighting will be bright and the ducks habituated to humans. I'll try the two lenses, one after the other, and make a decision about keeping the Tamron lens. From what I've seen so far, I think this lens is going back to B&H.

For people who mostly want to take shots towards the 18mm end of the range, this lens might be good enough for a few shots at 270mm, but if the intended use primarily is towards the long end, I'd skip this lens.

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

Purchased this lens about a month ago for a trip to NY & Boston and didn't want to take 2-3 other lenses (no way I wanted to carry that much around all day everyday for 7 days). So far, still getting used to this lens - there is a moment/minisecond before the shutter can be pressed with manual or auto focus with this lens - getting used to that. But, for my purposes, this lens is working out to be a good 'walk around' lens for me as I am still teaching myself photography. I was also able to get a $100 rebate with my purchase that was processed within a week of sending in the information. Transaction with B&H was great as always and while I was in NY, I did visit the store - awesome!

I love my new 18-270 Tamron lens it's been a long time waiting. I'm learning how to get great shots in sports with a lot of action. It's awesome using the one lens and not miss any shots. I just went to a long weekend of teens game competition and shot two basketball game with all types of great pictures I missed with the lens package that came with my Nikon 5100. It's a Great feeling. I'm not a pro by any standard still learning all about I, but I'm really excited about Learning and having fun with the 18-270 Tamron.

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

I'm impressed with this lens, a very useful range, seemingly good vibration control, smooth operation, but a very short throw for manual focus. The lens is very sharp at all ranges, although I have not had enough time to really put it through its paces.

It did have some friction problems out of the box but it soon cleared up, now it is very smooth in operation. The manual focus is app. 60 degrees, very short and therefor very difficult to use, the only drawback I found. Image stabilization works extremely well in this lens, as photos I've taken at 1/5 were free of blurring due to movement.

I bought this lens for event photography, but I've found it's great for wildlife photos as well.

It can take really nice macro shots and telephoto as well.

It's slow though, so if you're taking photos in the early morning or late evening you'll probably want to use a tripod. Also, wide angle photos are distorted.

Bought this lens because I was tired of exchanging sense on my Nikon D60, used this past week on a trip to see my granddaughter can't thank you enough for recommending this lens to me after I made a phone call to your NYC store.
Ithe pictures came out right as close up or telephoto I always recommend your store and friends and family had made purchases.
The clarity of short and long distance shots are great.
            Again thanks

Excellent all around lens for varying use. I am impressed with the photo quality especially for the price. Decent low light performance for a bigger lens. We have put to use inside a school auditorium where lighting was poor, outdoors for prom pictures which were excellent, and outdoors for nature. It also was superb at video where I no longer need to choose a wider angle lens or zoom. The auto focus works better then my old eye but can slow down the cameras shutter if the subject is moving or changing, the manual focus switch is easily used to eliminate the problem as long as the subject isn't moving to much. Super lens for everyday use and then some!

I tried this lens the night I received it on a concert shoot. Just looking at the images on the back of the camera, i could tell they were exceedingly soft. The next day I shot lens tests, on a tripod with vc turned off, at all aperatures and 5 different focal lengths. All were very poor! The 18mm exhibited extreme distortion at the edges, almost 'stretching' the image to where it could not be made out. This didnt improve with stopping the lens down. Even the best of the images, around 150mm, could not stand up to inspection at 1.5x. I would not recommend this lens to anyone. I bought this lens to replace the 2nd Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 that I wore out. I'll go back and buy another Nikon. If you cant afford a new one, buy a reconditioned Nikon for the price of this lens

I've had Tamron lenses for over 10 years, and consider them to be excellent in many ways. Not needing a combination wide/telephoto lens to bring with me any time I go shooting is wonderful, and this lens fits the bill. It's compact, easy to use, and once you get used to it, takes wonderful pictures. The price is verey cometitive, and compared to a Nikon lens, I think it's 'apples vs. apples' when it comes to the quality of your shots. I look forward to many years shooting with this lens.

Since getting my Nikon D5100 three years ago, I've been wanting to replace the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses that came with it with one lens. Found this lens a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased. An excellent lense for the price!

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

I love my new Tamron 18-270mm lens. It gives me the versatility to use it for whatever I am shooting. This morning I stepped out on my patio and there was a red shoulder hawk sitting a tree near my back fence. He was being "dive bombed" by smaller birds whose nest was close. At 270mm, I got several great shots. That is in contrast to being able to take pictures of my 11 month old granddaughter doing what she ought not. Same lens. This is my third Tamron lens and they have all been the best quality, most versatile, and easiest to use for the time they were bought. I have used them on Nikon N70's, D70's and now a D7000. Love 'em!

                        Wide or telephoto

Comments about Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens for Nikon:

This the the second lens like this I purchased. I bought the original and after about 6 years of hard use and a few good falls it locked up on me. I was so in love with the wide and telephoto capability I just had to replace it. There is significant bbl distortion. And it's not the sharpest lens on the market but for the price it's a powerhouse. I can shoot indoors and walk outside and shoot hummingbirds at the feeder. It has an almost silent motor and offers vibration controll. This is a do it all lens. sharpness, color clarity and focal length.. For half the price or the name brand lens.
