Out of the box, the remote feels light and toy like. After installing the batteries, it gains weight and performs fantastic! Feels great in your hand and is simple to use. Seems like the first time I turn it on for the night, my camera will not respond to it's wireless input. I have found that plugging directly from the transmitter to the camera and activating the shutter one time while plugged in, then switching back to wireless cures this problem. Mystery to me as to why this method works, but it does.
If you set the timer for 30 minutes, when you download your images and read the EXIF data you will see that the timer is SPOT on EVERY TIME!!!!!!

This is the best wireless release I've found for Canon cameras. In fact, at the moment it seems to be the only one available, though under many, many, many different names, and sometimes with cosmetic differences.

It's a clunky unit, and it works.

Until it breaks. Or starts firing randomly. Which it will.

I've been through four (I think) in the last three years, under both the Pearstone and Vello brand names--both of which are B&H house brands. If you buy one of these and use it in the field, it will break. The longest I've had a receiver survive is 16 months. The longest I've ever had a transmitter survive is 18 months. The shortest is about six months.

The miniphone contacts inside both the transmitter and receiver are very flimsy, and pressure on the cable can break them. Sometimes they also develop random faults, such as the receiver screen glowing green and shutting off after ten seconds of on time.

They're also completely unsealed, and if they cross the dew point, condensation will form inside and the receiver will fire (or stop firing) at random. Every reciever I've had has done this.

Sometimes, the reciever will start firing and refuse to stop. Every unit I've had has done this at least once.

Sometimes the transmitter's button will get stuck on. Every transmitter I've had has done this.

Sometimes the transmitter's button just won't work. Two of the transmitters I've had have done this.

Unfortunately, I've used several other wireless releases for Canon cameras, and this is the best--which isn't saying much.

If B&H would pot the electronics in epoxy (~five cents materials and probably about the same for labor), improve the construction of the miniphone contacts using a solid jack, instead of flimsy bent copper contacts (maybe another ten cents), use a right angle mini-phone connector to reduce strain (maybe a hundred bucks to make a new mold at the factory in China, and then no added cost per unit), and improve the button construction so the button covers don't slide into the casing or stop making contact with the switch beneath, this would easily be a four-star product. Hell, if they fixed all that and redesigned it so the unit only used one kind of battery (either AAA or AA), I'd give it five stars.

Instead it's two stars. And the only reason I rate it that highly is because there are even worse products on the market.

Works as it should. When I first bought it, I almost returned it thinking the autofocus didn't work but later realized that if you have your camera's autofocus set to anything other than your camera's shutter button, the Vello autofocus will not work. I had my autofocus set to my AF button, but once I switch the function back to my camera's shutter button, it worked just fine. Great item, highly recommended!

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Canon 3-Pin Connection):

The wireless shutterboss was on a $ off special and at that point I had to give it a try over the OEM and higher cost version. I have to give it a 4 star due to the build quality. Seems cheap when you hold it and you feel like you have to hold onto it tight for fear of dropping it and watching it explode all over the ground. Build aside, it does everything you need it to do. Wireless trigger, long exposure, multiple exposure, time delay, it does it all. The manual was a little confusing but once you play with it, after a few minutes, you can easily figure out what it will and wont do. Happy with the purchase but just have to be ginger with it and not toss it around.

I purchased this to use with my Canon 1DX camera. While it does include many advanced features, it does NOT support high speed/burst speed camera capture. If you set the camera on high speed shooting, it will only permit about 2-3 shots and then stop. I talked to the factory representative and he confirmed that this model will NOT support burst mode. Too bad - a major flaw, in my opinion. I still gave this 3-stars because it DOES support a lot of other nice features.

As a landscape photographer, I spend many early mornings or late evenings creating images of the magnificent great outdoors. Additionally, anytime I am using my LEE Big Stopper (10-stop ND filter), shooting in bulb mode is necessary so a remote trigger makes long exposure much easier.I have used other Vello wireless triggers that work well, but this one has a nicer feel in the hand and displays the time of exposure when shooting in bulb mode. The one thing I wish this remote trigger and all others had would be a power switch on the trigger device itself (to ensure battery preservation by disconnecting the batteries when not needed). Some day...All in all, this wireless trigger has earned 4 stars out of 5!

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Canon 3-Pin Connection):

I have had this remote for quite some time. After a recent shoot, I realized a limitation that I had never notice previously, as well as want to mention at least one other.
I needed to set up an interval shoot the other day where I needed to take 1200 1/13th-second exposures with a 2-second delay in between each shot. As it turns out, the camera needs to be in bulb mode to do an interval shot, and this requires a 1-second exposure minimum. Now I could have adjusted some settings and achieved the right exposure balance, however, I needed the faster shutter speed to capture the subject as was needed for the application. This was simply not an option. I could have shot the 1200 shots at the right exposure time, but not with the interval delay between them, this in my mind is a serious limitation. This means no timelapse during the day, unless you want to use neutral density filters so that you can take long exposures and capture blurry moving objects.
                      this is rather frustrating.
the other complaint is that there is no off switch or function for the remoter transmitter, so you need to take out the batteries in order to not drain them constantly, because if the button gets hit in your bag, you will be activating the transmitter all the time when not using it.
other than this, the remote has worked well for me, and I like its other function. With this said, the camranger app also requires the bulb mode for such an interval shot, making it not any better in the same realm of functionality.

Good functionality. Not intuitive, but relatively easy to use as you use it more.
I have had to take the remote apart twice to re-position the shutter release button. Overall design in this area leaves a lot to be desired.

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Canon 3-Pin Connection):

I shoot sports for a local newspaper and the Vello Shutterboss allows me to shoot remotely from behind the soccer goal, trackside, mounted above the action or odd angles around courts and playing fields.

The range seems to work quite well as I have fired remotely from up to 150'.

I have had relative few misfires from any distance.

One drawback is the remote does not have a setting for burst mode to shoot multiple frames (It does however allow continuous shots every 1 second in multi shot setting). I was able to seemed to have overcome this by setting the remote to single shot and the setting on my Canon 7D to high speed continuous shooting to get a burst of at least three shots.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the product.

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Canon 3-Pin Connection):

I use this remote to expose at a distance when my subjects come into frame. If I'm at the camera the birds stay away.
I also use it for night sky and moon lit landscapes and seascapes.
It has been very functional, but I only gave it 4 stars because the first one that shipped to me came with the transmitter DOA. B and H sent a second one right away that has been perfect. As usual B and H was superb to work with.

The receiver was not preforming correctly. Called BH and they sent a replacement all within one week. The product preforms as advertized and wirelssly operates the shutter at long distances and timer settings.

I haven't used this yet as I plan on using it for the 2014 college basketball games and weddings. From all the reading I've done, this will be a great gadget for my gear bag. Thank you B&H for the bundling this with the 1DX. *smart move*
