After I tried out this light at a fun and informative ikan demo in the Event Space, I bought one. I am very happy with it. It is a well-built and versatile light with many useful design details missing in competing products. The enclosure is light and sturdy. It comes in a case with battery, a/c adapter and even a quality ball-joint adapter for mounting on a light stand or hot shoe adapter. As a bonus, a 12V car adapter is included which really came in handy during a recent in-car video. The included diffusion filter also protects the light and snaps on with magnets, a clever design. It is light enough not to throw your rig (D-SLR in video mode) off balance yet the output is impressive for such a small light. It is versatile in that it can be used for video as main light in close-ups or accent light in the studio for video or continuous light setup. Being able to dial in color temperature makes this light so versatile. A small diffuse light like this also gives a job-related Skype session a more professional look. I can't wait to discover more uses of this light source. Two small criticisms: the instructions are Spartan and don't mention how to tell when the battery has been fully charged. Second, while the AC adapter can be used to power the light in the studio, the DV power cord is short and requires an extension cord. A longer AC adapter cord of sturdier quality would have made it perfect.

I have videotaped weddings for over 16 years and have endured lugging around those heavy battery belts for my on-camera lights for much too long. Even with today's low-light cameras, there is still a need for on-camera lights, especially at Wedding Receptions when lights are turned down so low, you think that you're in the "Black Hole of Calcutta."
Recently, I thought it was time to try out the new LCD lights that look like a dream come true...especially knowing that they are powered by the same type of small batteries that I use for my video cameras. Based on a "glowing" review, I thought I'd try the iLED LED light by ikan.
Here's what I found after giving it a try at a recent wedding reception. It's okay if you're taping close-up shots. The light, however, doesn't have a great reach even at max. I did like the ability to dim or increase the intensity. The dial for the color temperature is also a nice feature along with the soft focus filter (magnetically attacheable) for the light itself.
What I didn't like was the trouble I had keeping the light attached to my camera. The tightning knob would somehow get loose. At one point, during some preliminary shots of the wedding decorations, the light actually fell on the floor. I was actually shocked that it DID NOT break and both it and the battery continued to work. BUT after this incident, I reverted back to my traditional lights and heavy battery belts. I know that I'm going to have to come up with sometime to make the ikan more secure atop my camera. I give the ikan three stars for (1) Not bright enough for my purposes and (2) Easily comes loose.

I received the iLED 144 as a gift. I use it for fill light on video interviews. I'm very pleased with the quality of the light and its steady output (no flicker). It's very light weight and easy to pack. I find the swivel shoe mount very helpful. So far, nothing negative to report

Perfect to make eyes pop in shade and cloudy days. Doesn't work extra well in sunlight or complete dark, but in a pinch and there's no other option, it would still work. Lovely little guy and quite powerful and adjustable. Worth the price!

This light pretty much gets used on every shoot I'm on unless I'm renting a 3 ton truck or more. For an indie film, during night exteriors I've rigged these under awnings to key actreses as they walked (mixing color temps along the way). Use them regularly as backlights and fill for interviews. Used them in a bar, clamped to the ceiling, for a live music shoot when the band needed some extra light. Put them on the end of boom and you've got a great light to walk with camera and actors. Can't wait to get the ikan iLED312-v2 for more power.

Comments about ikan iLED 144 On-Camera Bi-Color LED Light:

I use this light on my Panasonic AF100 and GH2. It is light enough for handheld work and bright enough to illuminate a completely dark area.

When the camera is exposed for a brighter subject, the 144 can be used as an eye light or to soften cast shadows on an interview subjects face. Won't be a key light in a bright senario.

I mainly use it to supplement the ambient light during run-n-gun type shoots, so the color correction being built in to the light is fantastic! It replaced my old Sony HVL-20DW2, which has a vertical orientation and only lit a subject dead center while leaving the left and right sides with uneven falloff. The iLED 144 has a horizontal orientation so it works with the aspect of HD accurately.

It also came with a balljoint to tilt the light to the appropriate angle.

My old Sony light needed the larger Sony Batteries to run, and only ran for about 45min at full blast. This light can use the smaller sony style batteries and can run for hours. I like the on unit battery meter too, to help me quickly gauge if I need to swap out batteries before geting into a longer recording senario.

It is light to a fault as it feels like a fast setup/break down under pressure could allow you to snap parts off without thinking do to the plastic construction. However unless you build a light out of carbon fiber to gain strength and maintain weight, you are going to deal with these types of plastics.

In the end, the iLED 144 is a great light that comes with an all inclusive kit and provides enough illumination for basic needs.

This light is good for close shots and inside but is
not as powerful as my tungsten camera lights. The advantages are that the battery is a light camera battery, it is dimmable, and you can adjust color.
Another weakness is how it attaches to the camera. Flimsy plastic connector.

Comments about ikan iLED 144 On-Camera Bi-Color LED Light:

I decided to take the time to write a review because I read these and appreciate when I read from someone who knows what they are talking about. About Me. I am the owner of a medium/ high price Wedding studio filming since vhs cameras. With much sadness I retired my Sony vx 2000s and purchased a HD Sony ZU5. The lighting system I had for years was a Cool-Lux mini cool lamp ( $200.00) a NGR dimmer switch ( $175.00) and all hooked up to 6 amp/ 12 volt DC batteries ($30.00) that I would put in a shoulder/ pocketbook bag ( pretty heavy) and carry over my shoulder all night.

As soon as I started shooting with the new 16X9 widescreen HD I realized my lighting system would only light the immediate subjects and guests dancing on the sides were dark. The beam of light was to narrow.
Looking at lights I became interested in the LED but seen at an event a videographer that had a LED light but it was bright, blue, blinding like the headlights some cars have.

THIS LIGHT IS NOT LIKE THAT...I love IT !!!
              1. It's a dimmable light that wide open is very bright but I seem to use it at ¼ power….2...Most importantly you can change the color of the light from the typical blue LED to a very warm tungsten looking lighting. In fact recently filming a first dance of Bride and Groom and half way through the dance the idiot bartender turns the lights way down ( there goes my white balance) you can bump up the blue a bit to trick the camera.
That batteries last really long. I used the lights for a 5 hr reception at the max sometimes to ½ way and only used a ¼ of the power, Also nice so I can use Sonys NP 350 L series'
Does come with a cool little case that I put extra bats in.
Conclusion. I am buying another one so I can stop brining the heavy DC Cool-Lux system ( back up for now)to weddings and sell them.
              Yes would recommend to anyone

Comments about ikan iLED 144 On-Camera Bi-Color LED Light:

This is a great little light. It works for a catch light during interviews, or just a little bump light during dark events on a small floor. My only big complaints is that it is fragile, and it uses batteries that are notorious for burning out. Drop it and your buying another one.

The absolute BEST thing about this on camera light is that it is all-inclusive. No need to manually add diffusion or swap out gels to get the right color temperature. Everything you need is on two, easy to use control knobs. The dimming knob adjusts for every setting and the color temp knob will never leave your shots looking too blue or yellow. Definitely worth every dollar for the working professional!
