I bought this because I had a video project where I was going to be shooting outside for several days on a dairy farm. If I didn't have this I wouldn't have been able to see what I was doing at all on the camera's LCD, and squatting constantly to check the viewfinder was just not practical.

I found the menu system easy to figure out and navigate. The built in presets make this thing a snap to setup. I'm shooting with Panasonic's GH2, and the color on the Zacuto EVF compared to the LCD on camera is really much more accurate. The Zebras were a great feature, too. Made me feel like I was using a real video camera :)

When hooked up to the GH2, you loose the ETC mode (but can always unhook the HDMI for shots that require it). You also loose the zoom-in-for-focusing that is built into the camera, but the 1:1 pixel zoom on the Zacuto EVF was a fine substitute.

1:1 zoom, peaking, and zebras are the default function buttons on the side, which works for me, but you can program them to whatever you'd like, I believe.

The build quality seems very nice. Solid construction. I feel a little weird disconnecting the Z-Finder form the EVF. You kind of feel like you're going to break it, because you have to really snap it off with some force, but Zacuto says not to worry, and I don't foresee doing this often anyway.

I bought an extra battery for the EVF, but never needed it. I charged the battery at night inbetween shoot days, and it lasted all day both days, which were about 10 hours. I did turn it off when not in use, like when traveling between locations. As a reference, I used 3 of my camera batteries each day shooting about 2 16 gig cards worth daily.

So far, I really only have a few issues, and they are mostly small in nature. The most major of problems I had with it was that the dang eyecup kept falling off, and the anti-fog guard with it. It was a pain, and really embarrassing as it was constantly happening in front of the client. Luckily it never fell in cow dung, which was everywhere. Eventually I taped it on with Gaffers tape, and that put an end to that issue.

My second issue was in a run & gun setting, I wish the ball joint that comes with it was a little quicker to adjust, and better at locking in place. I feel like you really have to tighten it down hard for everything to stay in place. It's certainly nice to have in the package, though, because it allows you to position the viewfinder at just about any angle. This may just take some time getting used to.

The two other issues are really minor niggles, but I wish the EVF overlaid a little recording indicator in the view finder when recording. It's just comforting to see something that says RECORDING there. Otherwise, all you get is the battery indicator for the EVF. Seems like Zacuto could program in that overlay, pretty easily. I was doing a lot of interviews, and I would have loved it if it could somehow show other camera display items such as battery life and card space remaining while recording, but I realize that's more of a limitation of how the camera outputs HDMI signals. Now that I think about it, there may be a menu setting in camera to adjust that, but if you're using the HDMI loop through, you may not want that display to be sent to wherever your looping to.

The last tiny little gripe is that the HDMI input on the Zacuto EVF is on the opposite side as the output on my camera, so the HDMI cable has to swoop around the camera to make the connection. It was easy enough to work around, but still would be nice if it was more out of the way.

Oh, and watch out for leaving the Z-Finder tilted up to the sun without the little provided cap popped in. The Z-Finder is basically a large magnifying glass, and the sunlight can burn the LCD screen. There are warnings all over the thing to help you remember to be careful. The provided Z-finder cap fits OK, and is attached to the Z-finder with a little string so you don't lose it. However, if there's a breeze, or you're moving, it will clack against the camera and is very noticeable with the in-camera audio. I was shooting double system sound, so this wasn't a problem, but if I was hoping to use in-camera audio for anything, I would have been very disappointed. I'd recommend getting some poster putty or more Gaff tape, to stick the cap to he top of the EVF when not covering the z-finder.

All in all, excellent product though, and I would not have been able to do this shoot without it.

Overall I like the Z-Finder. It's simple to use, the image is decent and it has a long battery life. I bought a second battery which I haven't needed to use yet.
My only negative critique is the lag in the video. I bet it's because of the HDMI cable which is the only input option you have. It feels like it's 1 second behind. Which is ok for talking head interviews but it might be difficult if you do any handheld camera work or if you plan on doing some panning scenic shots (which is what I did. I used the evf to make sure focus was good then used the FS700's screen to do the actual panning. It's a solid 3 stars, would have given at least 4 if it wasn't for the lag.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

This is a good EVF for the price. Focus peaking, zebras, and focus magnification are the three functions I use the most and keep programmed to the F buttons on it. The first one I received had a screw that was loose, but B&H's great customer service was quick to help me replace it with a new one. The battery life is decent, and 800x480 is sharper than it sounds on such a small screen. I did not expect this to be so large - it definitely takes up a lot of room on my rig.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

have only ever used a viewfinder that connects directly to the cameras LCD screen so having the manuverabilty of the Z-Finder EVF Pro is kind of a game changer. I use it with my zacuto scorpion shoulder rig with canon 5d mk3 as well as when mounted on a tripod. It has tons of camera models settings built in (including my 5d mk3) so you can automatically adjust display size/ resolution/ etc very easily based on your camera. Also convient that it uses an LP-E6 battery which I have tons of laying around. The flip up is also a nice feature if more than one person need to be viewing the LCD at a time. Only downside I have found after a few months of use is the eyecup piece detaches from the actual EVF a little too easily, I have pulled it off by accident a couple times while trying to adjust position. Not a huge deal, as it is supposed to come off, as long as you dont drop the EFV piece while holding on to the eycup thinking it is secure. Like all zacuto products it is expensive, but you are paying for quality, USA manufactured, and lifetime warranty, and you definitely get what you pay for.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

Like most Zacuto products, this thing is well made and pricey.

I was planning on using it to allow me to use my C100 with a shoulder rig. The thing is I already had a TV Logic 5.6" monitor. So when I compared the two, I found that the TV Logic was much crisper for pulling critical focus for run and gun/cinema vérité shooting.

But what made me decide to return it (one day after it arrived) was the fact that it is no clearer than the C100's so-so LCD screen.

I recommend the TV Logic over this, or even the Zacuto C100 Z-finder Pro.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

This is a great little package with lots of useful features and is very well built. I use the zoom funtion often for critical focus and the false-color setting for proper exposure. The VU meters are also very useful. I tried both the Zacuto C100 Z-Finder Pro (slide-on the LCD monitor style) and the SmallHD DP4-EVF and finally spent the extra money for the Z-Finder EVF Pro 3.2" and couldn't be happier. It's well worth the investment. The Zacuto model that attaches to the LCD monitor worked fine, but having the extra weight and bulk attached to the fairly flimsy connection to the camera was just waiting to get broken and the rubberbands used to support the extra weight are not a great solution. The problem I had with the SmallHD EVF was that the new model they are currently shipping does not have a diopter, which was necessary for my use. So if you need any kind of vision correction, this is definitely a good choice.

The EVF with the focus assist was a huge help. In two recent events we were in challenging conditions being outside in direct sunlight and indoors in a dark room. With the focus assist we were able to ensure that focus was obtained in these dynamic events.

I saw the reviews prior to purchasing this product and as usual, I always have hesitations on trusting them. Now having used the product, I'm reassured by the results and the reviews were right on. The only con; It's sometimes a little hard to attach the battery. It takes a little more pressure than I would think it should. I hope it does not affect the power contacts with the device... remains to be seen.

Don't let the small size of this viewfinder fool you. There are many viewfinders that are 7, 8, 9 inches but the focus is tricky to nail down - To me that's the whole point to having a viewfinder - subjects stay in focus better. I needed this to do low angle shots of my subjects and to maintain my subjects in focus. It's also awesome because even though it's little, it has an output for HDMI so the director or focus puller can have their own viewfinder or monitor as well. I recommend this viewfinder to anyone that does videography with a DSLR. Like I said, best bang for buck if you're starting out and want more freedom with shot variety. Totally worth the $ spent.

After struggling to get absolute sharp focus on my 7"monitor, especially in sunlight, I decided to try the Z-Finder Pro. After a little adustment to accomodate my glasses, the Z-Finder worked perfectly. No worries. The extra rig to extend the viewfinder from my Mark III on a tripod allowed me to change angles and heights easily. Z-Finder is also a must for shoulder mounts. Rather than depending on LCD screen you can now shoot on the move and have the freedom and confidence that even the most critical DOF will be perfect every time. Great product. Well constructed. Good demo videos. Works as promised.

i use this with the zacuto fee e ng rig.
things i have noticed so far.
even with the latest firmware update, i am having freezing issues at 1080p out from my gh3.
i dropped it down to 720p but have not really shot a full project with it set like that yet.
coming from a eng style shooting background with a camera on my shoulder, the eye piece is nice, it has a weird 3x magnification to it though. i wish you could make it about the same size. i shoot a lot of sports and shoot with my left eye open, the 3x makes shooting with the left eye open a littl weird. however having the 3x makes focus checking a little easier. the pixel to pixel button is nice and easy to hit while on the fly as well. i have the flip up version and am glad i got it. the down side is if it slams shut the eye piece falls off because it is a snap on. once shut calmly the snap on is very secure.
there are preloaded settings for certain cameras, while my gh3 is not one of those, the gh2 has a preset and i found it is close. you also have an underscan option which helps with the 3x problem for me personally. the VU meters are sweet! this was a must for me making the jump to dslr shooting.
the battery life is nice, i bought a second battery so i can swap out for long days. we just did a 10 hour run and gun shoot day and never changed the battery.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

This is indispensable. The Zacuto EVF enables me to produce the kind of high quality video with my Nikon DSLR, required by my customers. Because I am serious about video production I cannot rely on the built-in camera LCD monitor to enable me to control focus and composition; the built-in camera monitor is both inconveniently located for multiple video angles, as well as nearly impossible to use in bright outdoor light. The Zacuto Z-finder with an enclosed 3X viewfinder lens and high quality LCD screen, enables me to precisely focus, compose, and view exposure levels -- in any light. I addition, I am not limited to viewing only behind the camera; I can adjust the EVF to just about any angle in relation to the camera body and lens. Also, this EVF is ruggedly built and easily adjusted to compensate for my far-sighted vision.

Comments about Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro (3.2"):

Works as advertised, and a definite aid to framing and focus especially in bright environments.

It requires some adjustment on T2i w/magic Lantern and T4i cameras. T2i preset is a bit too tight and cuts off the ML audio meter, and no preset is available yet for T4i, so a custom preset for that is needed. Detects image fairly quickly and reliably with T2i, but it takes quite a bit of playing to get it to detect a T4i signal. Since this is firmware upgradeable I expect these issues will get addressed in the near future.

For those trying to figure out whether the pro model is worth the extra money, I think it is. The ZFinder Pro gives a much bigger image than the ZFfinder jr I was using before and the ability to flip up the eyepiece is great for those shots where your focus isn't going to change and you want to maintain framing without having to put your face in the eyepiece. At least get the flip model.

Battery life seems very good, probably about 4 hours or so. Included case is pretty useless and won't fit everything - would be nice if a case were available. You'll need to come up with your own storage/transport solutions for this. Seems quite durable and is impressively lightweight. The included shoe mount ballhead works, although it's not great.

4 of 5 stars for the sync and preset issues with the T4i and T2i w/ML, which probably wouldn't be seen with the 7D, 5DM2 and 5DM3 as that's more the target market. Otherwise a solid 5.

Great finder that makes my Mark ii into a real video camera. Very happy with image quality and price point. One important note - definitely heed the warning about burning the viewfinder screen if you allow sunlight to hit it. It is similar to using a magnifying glass to amplify sunlight and it happens in seconds! We knew to watch out for this but still managed to burn the screen...it is very sensitive. My suggestion - although awkward - ALWAYS point the viewfinder down when not looking through it.

I tried a cheaper alternative and ended up returning it and going with the Zacuto. Yup, expensive but "you get what you pay for." Build quality, ease of use (can't over state this aspect), very low power consumption, and adaptability are superb. Haven't had it long enough to know about reliability yet. After several weeks working fine though.
