Nikon's 50mm 1.8G lens is one of the best photography deals out there. It is light, cheap, sharp, fast, and one of the best quality lens available. I call it my "Grandchild Lens" because its the best thing I have for taking pictures of my grandchildren. I bought it just for that.Grandchildren are a challenge to photograph. The small ones never stop moving, and if you try to pose them they either get grumpy or try to help with fake expressions and wild positions. The best option is to get casual shots when they are playing outdoors - but that option is not always open. That leaves indoor low light, which means flash or high iso settings with my Nikon 18-200 lens. The 50mm 1.8 saves the day. If I set my iso up as much as possible without going overboard, and set the 50mm at 1.8 or 2.8 - if the light isn't too dim - the shutter speed will still be high enough to hand hold and also stop the blur from the children's constantly changing expressions. That's not all. The narrow depth of field enhances portraits and the 50mm FX lens on my DX camera gives me a 75mm focal length which is ideal for portraits in a small room. Plus - the best part is the quality this lens delivers. This is one of Nikons best pro quality prime lens - and one of its cheapest.Don't take just my word for it. Read the on line reviews. I have never heard a bad word about the quality of this lens. The obvious down side is this is only 50mm. This is not a zoom. It has limitations. It wasn't made for wide angle scenics or wildlife photography. But what it was made for it does with gusto! I don't know who designed this classic, but my guess is - they had a lot of GRANDCHILDREN they wanted to photograph.

No doubt about it: this lens makes a bad first impression. My unboxing provoked immediate disappointment, because the build and mechanical quality feel so terribly light and cheap. The lens hood is HappyMeal-Toy-thin and flimsy; the focus ring has significant play in either direction before engaging; the lens itself is amazingly light and feels "empty."If, like me, you've purchased the lens as an upgrade to the older 50mm f/1.8D, these initial impressions won't sit well. The[$] "D" feels much better in hand; it's smaller; it uses the more common 52mm filter size instead of the new variant's 58mm; the "D" focuses faster; the "D" has a much better manual focus feel; the "D" has a much more useful focus distance / DOF scale. But in many ways, the first impression and inevitable comparison isn't fair. There's no question that the new "G" has better optics than the lens it replaces--it's a hair sharper wide open; bokeh has softer edges and a less obviously geometric shape. Silent AF-S focusing is terrific for live-view and video, and it'll work on even the smallest bodies. (This lens + D40/60/3000/3100 is a tiny but deeply capable portrait machine!)What's more, I know that the seemingly chinsey, "disposable" plastic build is ultimately *very* durable in the field--much more durable than the "D" style it replaces. If you drop the "G" on its flimsy hood, it'll bounce back into your hand without a scratch. The "G" design doesn't extend or retract beyond the body's form factor with focusing, so there's far less worry about knocking anything out of alignment. And, while folks like me may lament the devolution of focus / DOF scales, poor manual focus feel, and the proliferation of different filter sizes, it's just a fact of changing technology and habits that people don't use focus scales, manual focus, or filters as much as they used to in the film era. So, if you can get over first impressions and you can make peace with lens design following the evolving practices and needs of the art, it's a fine product at a fair price. Otherwise, the old "D", for half the price, is still a wonderful tool, too.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

No, this is not Nikon's professional normal prime. That is the 58mm f/1.4G, and it costs more than 7 times as much as this! For the price, this lens is absolutely fantastic. Everything is honestly great and more than acceptable, even on high resolution bodies like the D810. Of course, this 58mm will give you better results, but they are not 7 times better. The 50mm f/1.4G is actually less sharp than this lens when wider than f/5.6. However, the 1.4 does render better bokeh. It's all a matter of what is most important to you, but if you are looking for an great and extremely versatile lens on a budget, this prime gives the most image quality per dollar of any Nikkor.

Flimsy, plasticky construction aside, you simply can't go wrong with this superb lens, especially for the price. Great for portraits and street photography, fast focusing, sharp and fast! Just handle with care and it'll perform outstandingly well. Love it!

I am new to photography. Nikon 50mm 1.8G is my second lens after 18-55mm with D5200. It gives perfect focus on the object. I am still in learning phase taking outside pictures with this lens. It's worth to have this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

This 50mm isa good first prime lens that would work well for portrait photography and one that wouldn't clean out my wallet. It also was my first lens apart from the 24-120 f/4 kit lens. It brings in lots of light and takes a nice crisp photo. I decided on this lens because I use the awesome Nikon D750. I decided to go with the 1.8 vs the 1.4 because of the price and the reviews. Up to this point, the pictures produced with this lens have had amazing bokeh and have been tack sharp.

One thing I can't figure out is some reviews complain about the slow focus of this lens. The focus is plenty fast, compared to switching to manual focus. I guess some people will never be satifisfied even if you give them a new rope to hang themselves.:)

To make a long story short...This is a great lens for the price, and its a Nikon. Period!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

I can say nothing good about this lens. Except of course, it is a prime lens and it is supposed to be sharp. But it is not. Let me explain. Prime lens has to have better sharpness in its widest apertures. I understand of course it is not fuji prime or leica or zeiss glass. But… You see, okay on a 1.8 aperture it is soft and smooshy. Aga lets go to 2.8 stop. Better but still not sharp. Going to 4 stop, even better but still not sharp. And finally 5.6 stop-we got it!!!! It is sharp!!! Now tell me why do I need to buy this lens if regular zoom at 5.6 is as sharp as this piece of garbage?

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

I use this on a D7100 or D300 primarily as a slightly short portrait lens, and I simply love it. While not quite matching the snap of the 35mm f/1.8 (DX), it's very sharp indeed, especially stopped down two stops, but I don't hesitate to use it at f/1.8 for a creamy background.

Price played a role in my decision to get this one, and I have no regrets whatsoever for skipping the f/1.4 version--none. I was incredulous to find just how light this lens is (but a bit bulky for an f/1.8), and don't mind the apparent slowness of focus relative to the 50mm f/1.8D; the difference is negligible, and you won't miss shots due to it. It's very quiet, and, while plastic, feels robust.

A classic that nicely complements most any kit, this lens.

I chose not to get a bundle package and purchased the Nikon D5500 camera body and this lens. The auto focus motor in the lens is fast and accurate. I have not used the manual focus yet. It takes great pictures in all lights. I got it just before the holidays and i took lots of pictures inside and out. Almost all of them turned out great. It took me a little while to get used to the prime lens, but it is worth it to get the f1.8. My next lens will be a zoom lens to go along with this one.

First I must say I own both 1.4 and 1.8 versions. Simply put: there is no reasonable argument to go for the 1.4G version, the end. First of all, almost no difference in results when you compare 1.4 and 1.8 images. Half the price. Same plastic body (in any case, cheap enough to buy a new one if it fails). And last but not least, and here I must be honest, I'm not sure if my 1.4G copy came up flowed, but I found 1.8G to be equally fast (or faster) and more accurate AF, plus sharper wide open. Bonus (oh yeah): its lighter and smaller than the 1.4G. It's a no brainer kids. No matter if you are a pro, amateur or just starting with DSLR, you must own this lens. Along with the magnificent 85mm 1.8G, I use it 80% of the time.

This is my first prime lens. I wanted a prime lens that would work well for portrait photography. I decided on this lens because I use the Nikon D7200, so the crop frame makes this lens the equivalent of a 75mm, which is close to the 85mm so many people say is the "perfect" portrait lens. I decided to go with the 1.8 vs the 1.4 because of the price and the reviews. I have not been disappointed! The pictures have had amazing bokeh and I saved a lot of money over the 1.4.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8G is my DX format prime lens. I use it for low light shooting only. Mainly time lapse, and panorama. Like all 50mm lenses it has low distortion and large aperture. The focus range indicator is there and build quality is decent and very durable. Will take a drop and is weather sealed. Polymer is great.

On a DX it's like a portrait prime. It makes for compact light weight good for low light, and specific video applications. And, can be used on FX Cameras.

The downers: Bokeh is not that impressive due to the 7 blade aperture. The focus is slower than my zooms. And, like most primes in this price range there is a lot of chromatic aberration. Also, the focal length is very limited on a DX. Which make it more of a specialty lens.

Overall, despite it's popularity I find this 50mm a average buy, hence the 3 stars and the low price. For the DX Nikons, I prefer a zoom lens, as the limitations of the 50mm on a DX restricts the creative aspects of my photography. And it's down sides IMO are the Bokeh and color fringe which are what a fast prime's strengths are suppose to be.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

Besides the price, a little over $, my images really pop in low light. Also, my portrait work really shines with this lens. Hey, its nice to be able to afford Prime Nikon glass. You will still need other lenses in your kit, but if you don't own a Nifty-Fifty, your plane are just missing out!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

I thought I'd get more use out of the expensive version of this (the f/1.4), but 1.8 still have beautifuk bokeh and this lens is tack sharp. Great for low lighting situations and not nearly as heavy as my 85mm. I think I'll start using this for dancing at receptions since it's so lightweight. This lens is a camera bag must have!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

For a young photographer with a budget, but still wanting that professional look, this lens is really great. It is not as expensive at the 50mm f/1.4 and still performs pretty similar to it. I would recommend this lens to people who are just starting out, like myself especially when you have a budget.

I hadn't owned a 50mm in some time. It is a great lens when you desire bokeh or need to shoot in low light.
