I use this cable to run the output of my Tascam DR-40 from its mount in my D300s's hotshoe into the camera's mic in. I also monitor the sound with earphones.

The cable is a nice length for this sort of use, without excess cable getting in the way. However, I do note that the earphone cable can cause some operation noise on the Tascam's built-in mics as it flops around, so I might need to gaffer tape it to the camera to remove that noise path.

The cable is solidly and tidily built, and the male line-level plug is good quality, but the 90 degree camera mic plug (also male) is cheaper and the monitor socket for earphones is OK quality. This cable isn't cheap in build, but neither is it in price.

Overall, I'd give it a solid rating, but it's a tad overpriced, I think.

I bought this to use with my Canon 7D and Zoom H4n when I shoot handheld with a shoulder mount and shotgun mic on-camera.

Only problem is: when I mount my Zoom on my shoulder mount, the cable is too short to reach the mic input on my 7D-- by about six inches. I can't seem to find anywhere to mount the H4n to make this work. I would like to see a sketch of how they intended this to be used...

Comments about Whirlwind WHH4NL 3.5 MON Line-to-Microphone Attenuator Cable for HDSLR Cameras:

I connect the attenuator cable to my Panasonic GH4 via the Tascam DR-40 and the sound quality is vastly improved. When I purchased the DR-40 from B & H, it came with a recording accessory package. Which included a furry wind screen, pistol grip and an USB power adapter cable. I would have prefered the attenuator cable.

Works as advertised. Seems pretty durable. Note: the headphone connector will only give you an idea of what's being recorded, not exactly what is being recorded. Not the fault of this cable though.

I use this to attach a LPCM Recorder to my DSLR in order to improve the sound over what the built in recorder can do. It attaches the line out from the recorder to the Mic on the camera and provides a monitoring line for your headset.

The whole setup enables me to use phantom powered mics, have dual recordings at different input levels (for safety) and monitor sound while recording.

The cable is long enough to let you be creative with your device placemenyt.

DSLR shooting is the staple of my business. So many producers love the look and moreover the cost of using DSLR compared to RED or other cameras.
Naturally the 'cost' factor of DSLR shooting means you can find yourself shooting as well as doing audio.

I use the Whilrwind cable with my Tascam DR-40, as well as a Tascam DR-100. What makes this cable a must have is that it provides an additional monitor out as well as -10DB line out to camera. The -10DB to camera allows you to record straight to camera with a manageable signal level. All the DSLRs I've used (Nikon D800, Canon 5D, 7D, 60D) are tricky to get audio directly in as the signal is way to hot straight out of your source. The Whirlwind cable dumbs that signal down going directly to camera and done right will save you time in post. I have also used the cable with Magic Lantern installed and works well with that as well.

It does exactly what it needs to do! I use this to sync my Tascam DR-40 to my Canon 7D. It creates great sound quality with no syncing in post. I am very pleased. It does cost a little bit of money, however I'm not sure exactly what goes into making this product. So I can't say it's "overpriced".
