I use the Olympus EP2 as my take-along camera when I don't need the medium format digital, but I want the best lenses that can be obtained for this format. The 12mm f/2 is a wonderfully useful lens - wider than anything I have for medium format and fast. I have used it for several weeks now for landscapes and candid shots to good effect. The optics are good, but they lack the brilliance and razor sharpness of the 17mm Panasonic and I find the auto-focus of this particular lens on this camera to be unreliable. A lens this wide stopped down a few stops should have tremendous sharpness and depth-of-field even when not precisely focused, but I have not found this to be the case. Often what you want with a lens like this is to find the correct distance and f-stop for quick shots - I think I will have to do experiments to find this setting and use it manually. Used without the autofocus, this lens is very sharp but not quite brilliant. It has virtually no flare- I have shot into the sun at wider apertures and it looks good. The lens build is sturdy and very attractive, well made and light and physically small. Despite my disappointment - I would like to see razor sharp details using auto-focus near the center of the field even at f2 - I will keep it and use it often, but without the autofocus.

I purchased this lens to be used on my Af100. I was tired of using adaptors with mixed results. This is a nice looking lens though when mounted on the AF100 it looks tiny and silly. If your EGO is easily affected by the size of your lens, don't get this!

Auto focus works well with the Af100, especially when using the focus selection square on the Af100. Aperture switches smoothly and quickly via the iris wheel. The manual "switch" on the lens, which reminds me of the way many Tamron lenses switch to manual focus, causes issues with the Af100. In order to manual focus you need to switch the camera to manual AF. Just switching the lens doesn't work, it causing this un-smooth motion when pulling focus. Smoothest manual focus is had when the camera is set to manual and the lens to Auto focus.
With such a high price and rave reviews I expected superior sharpness. It is sharp but it can't match my Tokina 11-16mm on the Af100. I also own the Olympus 45mm 1.8 and the Nokton 25mm. These two lenses are razor sharp and that is what I expected from the 12mm.

three stars because of the high price and that it isn't as stellar of a performer.

Comments about M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens (Silver):

I know it's expensive but, buy it. Try to find a deal, sell one of your kids or donate a kidney, get it. I have been using the 17mm 1.8 as my primary for the last two years. That is one nice lens and I have no complaints about it but, I found myself wanting more of the scene as opposed to less. That is to say that I wanted wider, not longer. If you like to get close and get it all, without resorting to a Fisheye, this is it. Sharp, fast, built like a brick sh..., you get the idea. I'm passionate about my lenses, good or bad, this is a real keeper. Good luck.

Great Lens but pricey. The 12-40mm Pro is a better value, but this lens is much smaller. The build of this lens does feel solid. No lens hood.

Comments about M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens (Black):

This is my second lens for my Olympus OM-D E-M1 after the 75-300 mm Zoom. With a 35mm equivalent of 24 meters this works as a medium wide prime lens. I have gotten fantastic landscape shots with this lens with good color. This lens lets in plenty of light and works great for outdoor photography.

I use this lens for the BMPCC and I'm very glad I chose it. It's a great all-around lens with a respectable max aperture and a wide angle with little fish-eye.

At the moment, this is the only lens I have that works with the BMPCC, but I've actually found that it does a great job in almost every scenario - with the exception of interviews where a very shallow DoF is needed.

Comments about M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens (Silver):

I love my Olympus 17mm pancake lens. The weight plus length and quality of the output I get made it hard to walk away from. As a primarily street shooter, carrying a camera that cloaks itself well in public is important to me. I was worried about how this lens would look. I'm happy to say the size isn't overwhelming for street photography.

As for performance, I was blown away how quickly the lens auto focused. Again, another important trait in a street lens for catching those fleeting moments.

The price is steep and only "worth it" if you have the disposable income to make such a purchase. If you do have the means though, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens (Silver):

I had already bought other Olympus lenses, like the 45mm, the 60mm macro, etc... This was the second time I had bought this Oly 12mm in 8 months, and I felt it better to return them both times. I had thought that the first time, I had simply gotten a bad sample, but this second one 8 months later was the same.

It is a good to very good lens, depending on aperture and subject distance. I felt, however, that at this price, performance should be better & at a higher level across the apertures. Not bad, mind you, but I expected better.

I prefer 'primes' in the Micro 4/3 format, so I will simply use what I now own already and wait for Olympus to make another, better performing version. As an aside, the 45mm, 60mm, 75mm perform very well, to my high expectations.

                Henry

I wanted to love this lens. I own the 45mm Olympus and it's truly amazing. This lens has a better build quality, and a great focusing ring that adds to its appeal. However, the image quality was disappointing. Not nearly up to the quality of the 45mm, or the Panasonic 20mm I also use.
Great looking, well built, but I can not recommend this lens due to its lack of sharpness and inability to resolve detail.
I give it two stars for the great design and build.

Comments about M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens (Silver):

The image quality is fantastic. Wide open there's some minor distortion and vignetting but both are well within tolerable norms. Stop down to F/2.8 and those problems go away - it's amazing. The lens is literally sharp wide open or stopped down. There's hardly any noticeable flare and distortion is well-controlled. The build quality is fantastic and the lens is lightweight compared to other fast super-wide angle lenses I have used.In my opinion, in order to really enjoy this lens you need the Olympus VF-2 Electronic ViewFinder. This ads about $ to the cost of the kit. That is very expensive to be sure but well worth it if you're going to use this lens regularly. If I have a gripe its that at this price, Olympus is too cheap to throw in the LH-48 lens hood. It's a metal hood that in cases like this where flare is an issue, should just be in the box.ConclusionI haven't spent a great deal of time with this lens but I can already tell it's great. If you need a low-light, wide-angle lens for a micro 4/3 camera system and can afford it, there's no reason to delay. Pull the trigger. It is very expensive. Especially considering the fact that Olympus doesn't even provide a hood or so much as a lens pouch to go with it. But if you want good optics, and who doesn't - this is your lens. There are cheaper alternatives - but they are in my opinion - not better simply because they are less expensive. The 14mm lens from Panasonic can't touch this one so while you may fool yourself into thinking your getting ROUGHLY the same quality if you go that route, based on my experience you are wrong.

Lovely lens with snappy and quiet auto focus. Attached to my E-P 3. I have the E-P 2 as well and just purchased the E-P 5 with 17 mm lens and viewfinder. Quite pleased with the overall Olympus Micro Four Thirds E-P system. The camera fits my small hands, is light weight and of durable construction and lastly the image quality is quite good. Next purchase, a pro level zoom lens.

A great old 24mm equivalent reportage lens. Rock solid full metal jacket barrel and a brilliant manual focusing system. Even the good old hyperfocal technique can be used with this lens as it has a depth of field scale as lenses used to have in the old days.
