After reading many of the reviews here, I was leaning toward getting the 40mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (as a birthday gift from my wife), but I wanted to talk with the B&H staff about macro lens use and get a recommendation. Steve showed me the four Nikkor macro lenses. He said that the key factor was how far away from my subjects I expected to be. He pointed out that my 18-300mm zoom Nikkor could function as a quasi-macro lens at full zoom. I tried the 40mm macro and the 105mm VR macro, both f/2.8 lenses. Largely because of price I decided on the 40mm, with the idea that I would try it out on the High Line elevated garden that very morning and decide whether I wanted to keep or return it. I'm keeping it. After using my lovely but heavy zoom lens with my D7100 for a year, I appreciated the lightness of the 40mm. The camera is also less conspicuous with the smaller lens, so candid photography was easier. I was able to get very close to the flowers I was photographing, making some perspectives possible by leaning over that would have been impossible if I'd had to be further from my subjects. What really impressed me after loading the pics into Aperture was how good many of the images looked when enlarged. See the two enlargements below for examples. I used auto-focus with normal program (P) metering on the flower pic and manual focus with aperture priority (A) metering on the bee pic.

Haven't had the lens long enough to tell, but the pictures I have taken so far are very sharp. Will be able to write more after I have had more time to use. The manual that came with the lens is not helpful at all.

      Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I have been using the 40mm Micro-Nikkor lens for about two weeks now. I needed to change from the 60mm version mostly because of space. The lens is sharp and responsive and the details in the images are what I was hoping for. This is a sweet lens for close-up work and for portraits. It reminds me of the old 55mm micro-Nikkor I used on my old F.

      Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I read the reviews of all the Nikkor Micro lenses before purchasing this and I have no regrets. Let me start by saying that the only downside to this lens that keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is the close focus distance. I shoot uniquely outdoor flower and flora macro with this lens so it is seldom an issue for me. However, if you're shooting indoors or trying to shoot insects, the close focal distance will be an issue for you.

Now for what I like. For the money, the lens is very sharp and very versatile. I have a 35mm f/1.8 but if I didn't already have it, this 40mm would almost take it's place. The f/2.8 is variable but that doesn't matter IMO because the difference in aperture makes a minimal difference in nearly any macro situation. The lens is well made for the money and I love the Nikon M/MA focusing option which is standard on this lens too. No, this is not a professional quality all-around macro lens. But for south of $300, it is an excellent general use lens and a great natural light macro lens. I would replace it in a heartbeat with the same thing!

        Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I use this as a general purpose lens on a Nikon D5500. It is a lightweight, sharp, handy lens to have. The front element is recessed enough that I don't use a lens shade or filter. It is nice being able to focus closer than a normal lens allows you when you have to and I find the f2.8 reasonable to work with since the newer cameras are excellent at higher ISO settings. I also use a 35mm 1.8 and a mid range zoom but this is the lens that is on the camera most of the time.

I'm enjoying this lens. It's a nice bright lens, easy to use for macro. You do have to get very close to the subject, though, so it's not the best for insects. Overall, I would recommend it as a nice walk-around lens also.

                      Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

Despite a disappointment with the nomenclature on the lens, I'm giving it 5 stars because this lens is amazing as long as you know what you're getting. My disappointment with this lens was my own fault. As a relatively new photographer, my assumption was that all "prime" lenses (lenses with one focal length) had one maximum aperture and I thought the "1:2.8G" on the lens label confirmed that thought. Turns out, because this lens telescopes to achieve focus on close subjects, the maximum aperture varies from f/2.8-4.2 depending on how close your subject is. I thought I'd have f/2.8 no matter where I was focusing, but that is not the case.

Again, that was my fault for not realizing it and I suspect that is a factor of this lens' affordability. That aside, this lens is awesome. There's no shortage of bokeh and shallow DOF on extreme closeups. Very sharp, very beautiful images. I can already tell that I will thoroughly enjoy owning this lens.

Bought this lens together with the Nikon ES-1 to copy 35mm slides and negatives. I have found this to be a much better solution than scanning. Woks well for traditional macro photography as well, though to get 1:1 need to get very close to your subject.
