Use AA Lithium Batteries.

I'm submitting these comments about the SX150, particularly in defense of its AA Battery Power source. I really hate to see a good quality camera (like the Canon SX series) get an undeserved bad rap because of misinformation. I've owned several Canon SX cameras in the past and I must say they've all performed very well. To be able to have a camera with both manual capabilities and AA battery power is a rarity and a real bonus in today's consumer market (especially when using AA Lithiums). Forget the alkalines that come with the camera. Those are typically throw away batteries—use them up and toss 'em.

The next time you go to the store for batteries look for the AA Lithiums. I have been using the "Ultimate Lithiums" for a couple years now. They last about 6 to 8 times longer than your average alkaline and about twice as long as NiMH rechargeables. Yes, they cost about twice as much as alkalines but they're well worth it. You can get them anywhere, and they have a shelf life of 15 years, so they're always ready to go. Lithium AA's have changed the whole game. They standardize everything and just make things easier.

So, for the sake of any perspective buyers out there looking for a camera, don't let the negative comments about AA batteries discourage you from a good camera like the Canon SX series. Battery life is the last thing I have to worry about with any of my SX cameras. In fact all my other "high end" cameras with their "propitiatory batteries" have a much shorter battery life than any AA battery camera I own. Not to mention all the different chargers that go with all the different batteries. Have you counted them all? What a pain, and what a joke.

The only negative comment I have about this camera is that Canon has chosen to cave into consumer "mega pixel hype" and sliced its sensor up into 14 MP. Totally unnecessary. Twelve, or even ten, mega pixel was more than enough for the size sensor it has.

Also, Canon, if you're listening, we don't need more mega pixels or interchangeable lens in a small pocket camera, just a bigger sensor. The next generation of pocket cameras should get a good boost in sensor size (not pixels). We're way over-due for that.

Also, I believe any camera with manual controls and manual focus, like the Canon SX series, merits an LCD screen with at least 460k dots of resolution. We'd gladly pay the extra few bucks for it.

That's what we want.

I haven't had a Powershot camera before. All the many great features made this tempting. But within 4 hours of opening box the orig. batt's were used up, with very little vid time or shots fired (no flash either). The images aren't as breathtaking as I'd hoped 14 MP would be, moving from my 6 MP Digital Rebel (maybe the difference in glass). I shot a good video of a band in the shade that came out well, w/ good stabilization too. Tried to shoot a 2nd angle wedding vid Hi Def, balcony view, w/ new batt's, new tape. Hit record and it lasted 23 minutes before stopping (batt's). Will probably keep as 2nd vid backup; zooms well during recording. For it's cost it's good except for alkaline batt's drained dead so quickly. Screen not easy to view at all angles or if sunny.

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Red):

We use this camera on job sites. Some of the homes we go into are very dark and the pictures come out looking very good. It's nice being able to take up close pictures. The two best things that I like are the AA batteries, so I don't have to worry about charging the battery. If they are dead just pop in two new batteries and you are ready to go. 2nd is the removable SD card, as I can take it out and place it in the job folder for later use. I haven't found anything I don't like. I would like to say a Big Thank You to B&H for the best service I have every received from a camera store. Thanks Again!!

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Red):

I bought this camera for its simple point-and-shoot features and simple special-effects add-ons. Consumer Reports listed it among its top recommended products for price and value, and I agree. I have now owned this camera for several months and wouldn't even think of returning it. I absolutely love it! It is great for everyday photo needs and produces quality video. The sound and pixel clarity is phenomenal! Of course, you can't expect this tiny package to deliver the 100 special effects that a [$]llar camera can, but it does do a great job with the 12 or so it possesses. Fish eye, sepia, miniature, and toy camera are the ones I use most often.I have found only two drawbacks to this camera. The reviews are right: it does eat batteries up--and quickly. As long as you don't play your photos (and especially videos) on the camera itself, your batteries should last long enough for your photo shoot needs. Sometimes the camera can be outwitted. I have tried flipping the batteries so that they are in alternate sockets, and this seemed to work. But the trick only lasts a short while. The other drawback is the grainy quality of low-light pictures. My camera has only taken four such pictures, I wasn't the photographer for two of them, and I was using the setting for the first time, so I can't indicate low-quality as the rule in this area. However, I had expected much more based on the camera's performance on other settings. (As you may have already noticed, I have indicated "indoors/low light" as one of the camera's uses. This is half-true: it does great indoors, but not so swell in low light. But the form didn't have a button for each of these options.)Overall, I love this camera. It is definitely worth the price--what little cost that is, anyway! :)

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Red):

I own DSLR's and wanted something that I caould put in the car and use incase I see something to shoot without having to dig out my DSLR and getting the correct lens on and adjusting everything. You will want rechargeable batteries for this camera, I always have 4 on-hand. The flash is slow to recharge and it will use batteries pretty quick. Overall photos in daylight are very nice and have nice tone. Indoors with a flash produce very nice photos, but if you want to shoot in the evening without a flash, you'll get lots of noise. The zoom is great! If I would have had the money, I might have gone for the new sx160, as it appears to be a nice replacement for this unit.

Took the camera to Switzerland and fell in love with it!! I am usung Energizer lithiums and they lasted for the trip and are still working! The telephoto and image stabilizer work great!

Only con is that it's a bit larger than my S-410 which I retired.

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera as a step up from my compact digital in order to take pictures abroad. I love being able to use the different features, such as the fisheye, and the auto takes good quality pictures. The zoom works very well and still results in quality pictures. Personally, I hate flash photos so the fact that you have to manually open the flash does not bother me. However, take ten flash photos and there goes your battery. If you want flash photos, this is not the camera for you. I bought long-life batteries but I still have to make sure I have at least one extra set with me when I leave the house. It is definitively bigger than the compact but easily fits in my purse and is easy to carry around. For traveling, this has been a great companion, especially in countries where charging it would be a challenge.

I bought this for my daughter who is in senior school, as she needs to take stills shots for Hospitality and video for her dance assessments. This is the 4th powershot I have bought over the last 6 years. I have bought one for each of my kids as they have hit a certain age and one for myself. These cameras have never let me down. I have replaced my daughters original one from 6 years ago due to technology improvements, eg only two batteries now, and the fact this films in HD and increased mega pixels. I have always been happy with the value for money, reliability, quality and easy of use of this little camera and the reason I have come back again and again to buy more of them. The only improvement I would like to see is to have a longer lasting lithium rechargeable battery

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Red):

I found this to be a very un-lovable camera. First off, our suffered from what appeared to be a defect because it would only take about 8 or 10 pictures before complaining that the battery was low. We tried several different brands of alkalines, all with the same result. Also, low light performance was terrible, not just on the pictures but also on the LCD screen. Light sources (bulbs, glare, etc) would produce a vertical smear across the LCD which made it hard to compose a picture. Also, the LCD screen was very dim and grainy. What's more, it took forever to charge the flash. Most modern P&S cameras can charge the flash in a second or so... this one took 5 seconds or more, which is simply unacceptable. Looking at the resulting pictures, the SX150 IS shows a lack of detail when compared to similarly priced cameras from other brands. On the plus side, B&H's return policy is excellent and they took it back and issued a credit with no problem at all. This was my first time buying from B&H, and although the Canon camera was lousy, the experience with B&H was excellent.

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Red):

I recently got this camera in the mail, and while I am still learning the basics of the features (super n00b here with cameras), I already love it so much. The photo quality is amazing, the video quality is really nice, and I love the flash photos at night! The price was very, very affordable, and the overall functionality seems excellent. Like I said, I just got it, so it'll be fun to discover all the neat things I can do with this as time goes on.

Comments about PowerShot SX150 IS Digital Camera (Black):

I've been on a mission to find a small (or small-ish) camera with good all around performance. I wasn't impressed with this camera when the flash was used. Day time shots came out nice, with the colors fairly true to life (maybe a touch on the dull side, but that can easily be fixed with image editing software)-- though when viewed at 100% the images look soft. Since I am probably not going to be printing things very large I'd have stuck with this if it were not for the weak flash, and how long it takes the flash to "charge" between shots. Sometimes I'd be waiting 10 seconds for it to charge, which kind of kills the moment if you're trying to get a candid shot of someone.

I took a bunch of images inside with dim lighting, the flash should have, you know, lit things up, as flashes do, but if I was standing any more than 4-5 feet from the people I was photographing the images came out dull and were not nearly light enough-- they also had a yellowish hue. Other camera's I've had never had this problem. I could get decent pictures with a flash from across a room (as you often need to do with large group shots). I also took some pictures outside at night (of an opossum sitting still in my backyard that was maybe 5 feet away) using the flash and the images didn't look much better than pictures from a cell phone with a built in flash. When I didn't use the flash and just took low light shots they came out pretty good. A little bit grainy at larger size, but nice.

If it wasn't for the weak flash I'd keep this camera-- but it's not nearly strong enough to make it worth keeping. I like the option of manual controls and it also takes good macro shots in bright light. Another con is that it eats up batteries like no tomorrow. The batteries it came with were drained within a few hours, and I took maybe 100 shots, max. Still, for this price, with the features this camera has, even with the short battery life I'd have kept it... but the flash! so weak. I'll be returning it today...

The bottom line, if you're into flash photography, look elsewhere.

I wanted a quick focus, fast shutter camera that would take good
shots of my two Siamese cats at play.

The price was right, and my blurred cat photos are history.

I only had to use this camera for a day to know that it's a horrible choice for anyone.

Main reason - the Flash takes up to 12 seconds to "charge" I've never seen this in ANY camera I've owned, even super cheap cameras from years ago. While it's charging you can't do anything, not even change settings and to make matters worse, the flash isn't even all that good.

The picture quality is only so-so, the shutter lag is ridiculous, I kept missing the shot I wanted between shutter lag and flash charging.

I returned it after 2 hours of dealing with this.

For a small digital camera the photo quality is great. It does give you some shooting options but works just fine in automatic for the less experienced "picture taker". The controls are large and easy to use.
