I bought this camera in Jan 2012 but at the time was obsessed with the amount of noise at high ISO's from most cameras, so since the A77 fell short in this area, I sadly returned it even though I loved the responsiveness and usability of the camera. In the meantime, the Canon 5D MIII came out and since I had been waiting to upgrade from my 7D to full frame, I bought one. I liked the 5DMIII and really had no complaints about it, but I gotta say there was no "excitement factor" while shooting considering how expensive a camera it was. All the time I was using it, I just couldn't get the "feel" of the A77 I had returned out of my mind. I struggled with the fact that I wanted cleaner images at high ISO which is kind of my thing since I am an available light shooter of 40 years, but since I now had the 5D MIII, I had a clean high ISO. So, after a lot of thought (and no way to actually justify it!) I could not keep myself from re-buying the A77. I am so glad I did! I find the 5D MIII has sat in the bag because I just love the feel and responsiveness of the A77 and how it nails focus FAST and is just more fun to use - can't really explain it - it's just a snappy camera. I have never run into lenses that aren't calibated to the body like I always am with my Canon system. Anything I put on it just works. Only exception is a Minolta beercan that I needed to do a MF adjustment on - but heck, that lens is from 1985! Speaking of which I did tandem shots with a 'big" beercan 70-300 and my 5D MIII using a 70-200 f4L and by far the shots with the A77 and old Minolta lens were far sharper than anything I got with my Canon gear. I was shooting ducks in a pond with very contrasty, challenging lighting.

I use live view only for the most part, and I love how FAST the shutter releases in live view - try doing THAT with Canon or Nikon in their barely-usable live view (unless on a tripod with a static subject). I like that I don't have to hide behind the camera to get my shots - I can look at subject and talk to them and they can see me as well. Movies have been STELLAR! And 12 FPS is too cool!! I like the "low" fast speed too, great for some of the stuff I do when there is less movement so I don't blow off too many identical frames.

There are a very few things that could be improved. It's very easy to press buttons by mistake, changing settings without really realizing it. It hasn't happened that much to me, but it's happened to my spouse who isn't used to the camera. I wish there were programmable settings for zoom levels when reviewing pictures like on my Canon. I use custom WB A LOT and wish there was a way to hit one button and go directly to that setting or to have it go right to that setting on a customizable menu setting like on my Canon. Exposure can be tricky, and I find myself needing spot metering more than I normally would. At least you can see what's happening in live view. The 16-50mm 2.8 lens is nice but a little heavy, so unless I need the wide end, I use the superb and inexpensive Sony 35mm DT 1.8 SAM as my everyday lens and mostly the vintage Minolta Maxxum lenses which are wonderful on it. The 135 2.8 is mindblowing!!

I have gotten used to the noise at high ISO, but I just try to use fast lenses and not crank it up past 1600. If I need higher ISO, I'll use my 5D MIII. I wish that Sony would disallow you to take pictures without a card inserted. If you miss the not-very-obvious "no memory card" words which is easy to do, it will let you shoot away without a card. At least let people choose whether they want this option or not (NOT!). It does use batteries, but just have a spare or two on hand, no big deal. Sometimes in live view, if you get too close to the screen, it will go off and turn on the EVF instead, so that can be annoying so you have to hit the LCD/FINDER button quick to turn it back on but if you move away and close again, you have to repeat the step. It doesn't happen that often though. I wish there were more customizable buttons on it that weren't already designated with labels on them. I also wish the movie button wasn't so far to the left - while filming I find myself having to re-position my hand which affects the steadiness of the movie to be able to turn it off. I NEVER hit it by mistake.

Even with the things I'd like to see change, they are mostly convenience features. If I do spring for an A99, I will NOT get rid of my A77 as I want to keep an APS-C body that has the reach I need in certain situations.

I am a wedding and event photographer. I find the camera to be well built and well thought out in many ways. The things that a made me feel it was not a "keeper" were:
Too heavy for it's class and when used with the 18-50 balance seems off, unlike a camera like the 7D which I presume is it's close competition.
Battery on Canon's seem to last way longer
It is very disturbing to have screen blackout between shot which I guess is necessary, due to it having an EVF screen. When doing candids at a wedding I prefer to see the action at all time's in order to get the shot I need the instant it happens. One can't rely on EVF's for this reason. If you use the multi shot mode your buffer fills up and you just can't do reliable shooting, when you are getting screen "black-outs". The lens is also too stiff for video zooming. I found the lack of being able to control the AF spot during video annoying and it results in various seconds of soft scenes. I must say that the video experience is vastly improved due to the fact that the mirror is stationary. Far beyond what Nikon or Canon can do yet when it comes to AF focusing during filming. But it is a heavy camera to hold when doing video more then a Canon G10 (for instance) or various other semi pro models.
I love the way you can flip out the camera screen to use in various positions that are very unique in comparison to any that I have ever used.
The menu system is a bit tedious and envolved and there are some functions that deserve a manual button rather then digging into a menu.
I find that although with the magical speed the camera is able to shoot at, (till the buffer limit slows it down) the camera is much slower in all other ways then a 7D or D700. Turning the qperture or shutter speed dials does not instantaneously change the reading. It lags. The EVF viewfinder as nice as it is, does not replace an optical one unless maybe for table top shooting and landscapes.
It was nice camera to examine but if I would want to own a Sony with an EVF finder I would rather go for a lighter NEX-7 and for the work I do this can not replace my present Canon camera's.

There is no other digital SLR that I have ever owned that even comes close to this one. I have owned Leica and Hasselblad and they are not even close. The features on this camera are far superior to any I have ever used. Fast, accurate and extremely sharp glass.

Stepped up to the A77 from my first A100 camera. All my Minolta lenses fit this body so it was a no brainer to step up. Also wanted faster lens than the 'standard' 3.5-5.6 zoon.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

After months of research and educating myself on DSLR cameras, I decided to go for the Sony A77. The electronic viiewfinder allows you to be more proficient in preparing the still picture if needed. The viewfinder is like a bionic eye/helper that can display a lot of great information about the mode you are in. The first stills uploaded to the computer are impressive. The camera is easy to use and the quality of the camera and 16-50mm lens are top notch. This kit is great because both the camera and lens are water resistant and dust proof. My brother has a Canon 7D and he recommended me to buy this camera beacuse it is easy to use, offers 19 focal points, 12 frames per second, great kit lens and is excellent for making videos. I purchased it so that I can take great pictures and videos of my 4 month old son. I am having a blast creating wonderful stills of my son.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

I purchased the A77 as an upgrade from my A57. So far I am very happy with the decision to do so. This camera has performed very well up to now though at the time of this review I have only taken 150-200 shots with it. I was a little worried about the supposed low light high ISO grain that some people have complained about but frankly I havent seen any such problem surface. I have to admit though that I only use good lenses with wide apertures so I havent had any need to go above ISO 1600 in spite of the fact that almost all of my photos so far have been night street photos or inside available light shots. I debated makeing this purchase now or waiting for the replacement from Sony due out in 2014 but when I saw B&H's price I figured I couldn't go wrong. The 16-50mm f2.8 lens is no ordinary kit lens but is hands down the best zoom I have ever owned. It may be one of the best zooms available for any APS-C camera by any manufacturer. Yes it is that good! The only downside is I wish it was just a little bit longer, say 16-80mm. The constant f2.8 is great and so far the lens has produced very sharp, detailed images across the entire zoom range. The autofocus is fast and accurate. The fact that the lens has the SSM drive is another plus. It is flat out the quietest focusing lens I own! You can hardly hear it at all. I love the expanded ISO range available with the a77, a big step up from entry level DSLRs. The fact is there are several professional reviews of this camera online so If you want to see detailed graphs and lab test results you should see those sites. If you want to know if I am happy with my purchase then I can say absolutely. If your looking for a blazing fast high quality "Prosumer" level APS-C format DSLR then I can say without a doubt you will be very happy with the Sony A77. As the title says get one while they're hot, they wont last much longer.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

So far the camera and lens has worked generally quite well. It is a good combination and I feel you get a lot of features for the money. Mine came with firmware version 1.07 which resolves some previous issues compared to the first few versions. I have the 70-300 G lens also and do recommend it. The GPS locks in fairly fast depending upon the location and whether you have downloaded the GPS Assist Data info into the camera.

The flash does pop up at times when you don't need it but it can be turned off. I did find a bug in the D-R function which Sony is working on.

The first camera I purchased recently had a mult-selector issue so I had to send it back and get another.

Concerning Sony's Support, they usually answer the phone without much of a wait but it can be difficult to speak to someone who doesn't have to consult support documentation first to resolve your issue.

(Note in the Cons section, I entered D-R and the Website changes it to D-r.)

The OLED viewfinder is an amazing feature and provides great information you just can't get with an optical viewfinder. The 'kit' lens is a great all around lens and works well in just about every situation. I am constantly shooting around Nikon or Canon photographers who are always curious about my Sony, they always walk away impressed.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

I had owned a Sony a100 for the past six years. It was a fine camera, but the a77 has SOOO many features for the price, it's incredible. The best one is probably that you can change your aperture/shutter speed/ISO/etc. settings and instantly see how it will affect your picture. The improvement you'll see in your photography will be significant and nearly instantaneous. The mode (handheld twilight) where it shoots six shots at super high ISO and then combines them into a single high quality frame works far better than expected. Auto-HDR works fine, but not spectacularly. The panorama mode is a little tricky to master, but it's still a cool feature. The only gripes I have with the camera are relatively minor: battery life is mediocre, the movie record button is in a terrible spot (such that you'll accidentally hit it without realizing it), and that the camera is not smart enough to automatically switch from RAW to JPG when you want to select a scene setting that only works with JPG. Oh, and 12 frames per second!!! It's crazy awesome for taking baby photos.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

Really great camera! Semi-pro here and there are some down sides, but not deal breakers and the good far out weighs the bad. First, the noise. To qualify I have only had this camera for 3 weeks or so and the weather outside it terrible so I've been "pushing" this camera to it's limit, and that limit starts around 800 ISO. In a well lit shot without a lot of "true black" it's not a problem at all at 800 and and a little above. When things get dark, I can see some, or a lot of JPEG artifacts popping up and the HDR mode only increases it. Let me state I am at this time, really pushing the camera and pixel peaking so that as you may. Also have problems with movies but only on a new card. I think I got a bad one.
When I took it outside or shot in the lighting I normally shoot in, it's wonderful and boarders on fantastic! The balance of the camera is great with the "kit" 16~50 2.8 lens (more on that later.)
weather sealed, dual dials, top LED screen and FAST! From start up to auto focus this baby is built for fast work and great in an action environment. Be it sports or grand kids it's spot on.
Sony did put in a "work around" for low light situations. In the ISO setting you can choose to shoot mutable shots (rather quickly) and these images are combined to one shot that reduces the noise a lot. Quite a lot! I used it for the first time in terrible lighting and the results made my jaw drop! I have never seen a camera capture an image with that detail in that type of light. Really blew me away. This is only good for a static subject so once again, good with the bad but WOW!
The "kit" 16~50 F2.8 lens if you can it a "kit" lens is fantastic! Tack sharp, great colors and good bokeh. It's not on a par with a 1.4F bokeh wise but it works better than many 1.4's I've used! AMAZING!
The OLED gives you a preview before you shoot. Case in point. I was shooting under exposed for a shoot yesterday. I went to shoot another subject today and the view finder was really dark. I knew immediately to check my exposure compensation and yep! Still set at the last setting. Saved the shot!
So, If you shoot in medium light, or dark and have a tripod, it's great. If you shoot normal lighting conditions, it can't be beat! So many more features I love but do some research. I you won't find one bad review anywhere and really speaks volumes.

I just received this camera and it's an upgrade from my Sony A350. I'm still getting used to some of the settings as they are a little different from my last camera. I'm loving the super fast shutter speeds at 12 fps. Can't wait to get out and do some more shooting with it.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

This camera is all about Sony quality and SPEED! Its fast. I use this camera in a wide range of situations from photographing young children in a preschool setting (they just wont sit still) to stills, sports, wildlife and much more. So far it has not let me down. Its also very good in low light. Some have sad they dont' like the fast focus. You can set this camera up many different ways for fast focus work. Read the instructions carefully and experiment to get what you want. I have been very satisfied with the fast focus work of this camera. I also like the weather resistent body and lens. Good build.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

The A77 is a fun camera to own. I also own a Nikon D90 and D700. The A77 is fastest camera I've ever owned. The 24 pixel camera presents awesome photographs. The controls and menu are not as friendly as my Nikon's nor does the battery last as long. However, it has a wonderful panoramam and video presentation. I love the speed bursts of the camera but after a burst you have to readjust the focus on your image. I'm still learning to adjust to the camera. It has a nice feel and I put on a battery pack that gives it more bulk and a feel I like. My photographs are higher resolution and look as good as my professional gear.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

Some people might find the SLT-A77 Sony a little pricey but I can assure you it is worth every cent. Sony deserves a lot more credit for their professional level DSLR products. The A77 is easy to operate in even the most demanding situations and controls are naturally located and are easy to instinctively understand. I've shot Nikon for the past three years and don't know how I can pick it up again. The Sony is that good!

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

I did a lot of research. I'm coming from an old Nikon CoolPix 5000. I wanted to step up to something that as a transition to more manual (aka professional) shooting. I love the camera. Finding it a great camera to transition to. I compared in my research to Nikon & Cannon. Discount off at the time I bought it. Love it. The kit lens is great quality for a kit lens. Not great zoom, but its something. I hear raves about the movie quality, but haven't put it to the test yet. According to my research this is the only camera at the price point that auto focuses in movie mode & the motor is quite silent.I'm impressed with scene modes & auto-focus. The full tilt & pop up viewer is untouched by any other camera. Shot hockey players & the quality was great.

This is a replacement for my Sony A550. There is a dramatic improvement in image quality, resolution, contrast and true to life colors in standard mode. I have only played with the A77 for two weeks but so far I like everything about it except for low light/high ISO noise. I was not expecting it to match the Canon EOS 5D Mark III but I was hoping for better performance. In that area (including the High ISO Noise Reduction and the Long Exposure Noise Reduction options) I found no improvement over A55. Well, I bought it for daylight bird photography and here the fast smart focusing is amazing. So the one star it lost in high ISO area it makes up in auto focus.

Comments about Sony Alpha a77 DSLR Camera with 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Lens Kit:

I got this mainly because I have a baby on the way. When comparing camera's I looked at Canon T4i, Nikon D7000, and Sony A65 and Sony A77. The great points of Sony A77 is that the viewfinder shows you the changes as you do them. In Nikon, and Canon I didn't see that. The video auto focuse makes clicking sounds of the lenses, but the 18-50mm is alot more quite than the older 18-200mm default lens. When comparing on low light all the models I compared were not that great, Canon was by far the worst on image quality, then Sony A77, and Nikon was the better in this category. When comparing on burst modes, Sony A77 had the fastest speed. I was debating on A65 which is similar but a plastic body and 2fps less in this category. However, I didn't like that the A65 doesn't have the extra little box on the top to tell the Focal lengths and all. For Canon and Nikon they were both surpassed in the category as the max frame rates would go to 3-5 fps. The Sony Quality was actually better despite the 19 point AF and the 29point on the Nikon. When comparing the Auto Focus feature, Canon T4i is way to noisy, and Nikon D7000 didn't have the feature when I went to see them. Sony A77 with the 18-200mm was just as noisy as the Canon but the 18-50mm was pretty quite. This was a big deal since I don't want to alway lug around and external mic for video. In addition, I didn't like that Canon and Nikon can only record in .mov format. It's annoying to use that format on a PC!The one feature Nikon and Cannon both didn't have was a level on the display. Sony A65 didn't have this either, but the A77 did. I love that I can be rest assured that the camera is leveled when taking a picture. Bottom of the line, I spent 4 months reserching and Sony had the next generation features and the most bang for the buck. The one drawback is that there are not as many lenses offered that Cannon and Nikon usually get. I am pleased with my purchase and love the high quality pictures! Also, one take away is stay away from google shoping when comparing, it seems like B H Photo is trusted as I have both many other items, and there are few others. If the price is too low, stay away from those websites because it's probably a fake.
