Sorry for the obvious inference, but it's true. I've always admired Zeiss optics and this lens carries on the tradition in fine form. I mounted this lens on my NEX-5N with the OLED viewfinder and have used it almost exclusively since. I also have the 18-55mm, 18-200mm zooms, the 30mm macro, 16mm pancake with fisheye & wide angle converters and a few Lensbabies. I'm considering a second body for them as the Zeiss epitomizes the one "Go-To" lens concept. As a street lens, this combo is hard to beat.

The sharpness is unsurpassed and the bokeh produces an exceptionally pleasing fine, creamy effect. This is especially noticeable with the aperature wide (or almost wide) open and the foreground subject at minimum focus (~six inches). While the f1.8 maximum is fast, DOF is so shallow that care must be taken with autofocus to capture the subject. However, manual autofocus assist greatly helps in these instances especially when low-to-medium peaking is enabled. There's one note of caution about the sharpness. This probably wouldn't be my first choice for portraiture unless in-camera softening or post-processing is used. This lens will bring out all the wrinkles, dimples, etc. It's great if you're going for that effect, but maybe not ideal for family gatherings, weddings and such.

Overall sharpness is best achieved at f4.0 and beyond and grain is well controlled at high ISO. For some reason, I find that I rarely use AWB with this lens. I normally use the sun, cloud or shade settings (tungsten or fluorescent when indoors). If necessary, I'll dial it in manually when the lighting is particularly tricky. I'm not sure if this is a lens or sensor effect. I find that, more and more, I'm taking this same approach with my other cameras/lenses as well.

The lens is pricey at ~$1,000.00, but this is a classic case of getting what you pay for. Build quality is excellent and the manual focusing ring turns smooth as silk.

If you're serious about the NEX system, this is money WELL spent. I'm anxious to see prints made from a Zeiss/NEX-7 combination.

After reading some glowing praises about this lens from other NEX owners, I decided to bite the bullet and try this thing out on my NEX 7. What are my thoughts? The Good:The fit and finish of the Zeiss is superb. I was quite surprised how compact it actually is (without hood of course). Also, this lens is one of the sharper wide-angles I've ever tested and the corner sharpness wide open and stopped down is quite good. The Zeiss is suited well for nighttime photography, not only the sharpness but the deeper depth-of field associated with wide-angles compared to more normal focal length, fast lenses, so that more of your subject would actually be in focus. I really do like to close focusing distance of the Zeiss which makes it extremely versatile. The Not-So-Good:I did notice some lateral chromatic aberration even when stopped down. Although this is already corrected in-camera, let's just say Sony's JPEG engine is not the best in the world. This means I need to resort to processing my RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw. The lateral chromatic aberration can be fixed in Lightroom/Photoshop but you never totally get rid of it.One surprising thing I noticed is that this Zeiss has bit of focus shift. One note: NEX lenses autofocuses with the lens aperture wide-open. My wide-open shots were accurate but my other shots when the lens is stopped down had a bit of backfocus.I do wish this lens had image stabilization (or at least I wish my camera had in-body stabilization). I was more than fine when shooting stills, but when I it came to video, I really needed a steady hand or else I would have some jittery video clips. You need to watch out when threading filters to this lens. The filter thread on this lens is slightly recessed into the barrel, so if you install a thin B+W UV filter like I did, you may have a hard time taking it out if you put the filter on too tight. I did mention that filter threading is plastic? Conclusion:In my experience, the negatives outweighed the positives, so this lens is not for me. Other people are very happy with the Zeiss but I guess I'm too picky, especially if it costs[$]. Looks like I'll stick with my legacy glass for the meantime. The Zeiss is great for low light and if you are willing to live with some of it's issues, more power to you.

Great lens, still wish it had OSS

By Ryan

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

This is a great lens - very sharp, I like the field of view as 24mm looks very natural on APS-C for a good general purpose lens, and f1.8 is great for low light. My bottom line is that I bought this while on vacation in NYC and I ended up with some great low light / night time shots that I probably would not have been able to get otherwise. So it's a keeper for me.

I give it 4 stars because it doesn't have OSS (stabilization) and I think it's a little overpriced. If it had OSS (or was less expensive) it would be 5 stars for sure. Also, I don't get the "Zeiss pop" that I hear people talk about. I like the colors from the E35f1.8 and the E50f1.8 just as much. I think it's a placebo effect.

Good Match for the a6300

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

I was looking for an all-purpose lens for my new Sony a6300 and have chosen this lens. This was a good choice for several reasons. First and foremost, the lens performs very well in the sharpness and color areas. Secondly, it is a good size for this camera as it allows me to cradle the lens/camera in my left hand while using the viewfinder giving me a nice, solid platform for shooting an image. Looks pretty good on the camera, also and is not threatening to others as some sort of intrusive tool. The lens lives up to its reviews as being an excellent lens. No problem for me to recommend it to others.

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

This one was not a keeper for me. I tried using it on my a6000 and was surprised at the number of shots showing unacceptable amounts of chromatic aberration in the usual places (trees), and some strange chroma effects that I have never seen before. I have a Zeiss FE 35mm f2.8 that I absolutely love on my a6000 and expected the same from this lens particularly given all the good reviews. I had only a limited amount of time with the lens, but was startled by the purple hues that appeared in shots that weren't even high contrast. I shot the face of a distant brick building that, zoomed in, showed a sort of zebra striping. Another shot of a shingled roof line against the sky showed little chroma rainbows when zoomed in 1:1. Yes, it did also produce some lovely photos.

So, it may have been just a poor copy of the lens, or some kind of operator error, but at this price point I wasn't going to hang on to it to figure out what was going on.

Picture sharpness, contrast and color rendition with this lens when paired with my Sony a6000 is on par to my Canon L glasses.

It gives me equivalent of 36mm (1.5x factor) which is my most used FL and it balances very well attached to the a6000.

I bought it to replace the kit lens and I use it for street photo, grouop photo, low light and landscape.

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

I purchased this Zeiss lens about 6 months after I purchased my Sony NEX-7. It was the best piece of glass I ever owned. I used the lens for fantastic photos in my travels to Lanzarote, Spain; Rome, Italy; Florence, Italy; Pisa, Italy; Marrakech, Morocco; Copenhagen Denmark; Tallinn Estonia; Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia. I also enjoyed using it in the Caribbean.

My pictures were always sharp with great color rendition and never experience flaring or distortions at the corners.

I also used the lens for jewelry photography where I wanted a sharp photo of the ring, earring, watch or bracelet surrounded by a Bokeh (blur in the background).

In short, this lens was one of my absolute favorites, however, I sold it. Why?

I recently purchased a Sony A7ii, full frame camera. Although I could have used the lens on the A7ii due to the e-mount, it wouldn't be optimal for the full frame sensor.

I am using the Sony 28-70 f3,5 kit lens for full frame with the camera and it is nice but not as great as a Zeiss prime. I also just purchased a Voigtländer 40mm f1,4 manual focus with an e-mount adaptor to shoot landscapes but I am now looking for a Sony Zeiss prime lens to replace my departed SEL24F18Z 24mm f/1.8 E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens by Sony.

By the way, the lens held 90% of its value upon selling it.

So far I have simply been testing the 24mm f.1.8. I plan to use it to photograph people and flowers.

I find it is easily as sharp as I had hoped. Also the autofocus, while a bit slow, has so far seemed adequate.

Yes, there is more plastic than I wish were in the mounting, but such is the state of things these days. I don't think I got away from plastic even in my EF lenses.

I especially appreciate the quality in a lens that works with the NEX-7 to give me a camera I can one-hand when necessary.

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

I love this lens. The clarity is a true wow factor and quickly has become my favorite lens. Only downside and reason for only 4 stars is lack of sony's optical steady shot which makes low lighting shooting difficult if not on tripod or really concentrating on holding still. However, of all my lenses, this is my favorite!

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

I agree with the positives from other reviews; good glass, fine focus, etc..surprisingly good macro.

High-quality images with my Nex 6.

I am happy with the investment, because over time I can upgrade my camera, but the lens should retain much of its value. Seems solid, well built.

                        I LOVE shooting with it.

this lens looks very good, it's sharp, nice natural colours, very little distortion. normally i don't like wide angle, it's my only one, and i'll keep it in my kit with my normal and telephoto lens.

Comments about Sony 24mm f/1.8 ZA E-Mount Carl Zeiss Sonnar Lens:

The Sony SEL24F18Z 24mm lens works great for me and looks beautiful on my Sony NEX-EA50UH camcorder. I needed a wide angle fast lens that looked great using only candle light to light a scene in our horror indie film. The director was amazed at how well it looked after we did our first test shots. I recommend this lens to anyone needing a great low light lens with optimal depth of field. The only thing I wish it had was image stabilization; but this is not a huge deal since most shots I do are on a tripod or steady cam.
