I use my cameras mostly for landscapes, architectural photos, and travel. I never shoot movies or use many of the "art" features on these new cameras, so why did I bother to upgrade from my old GF1? Three features of the GX1 were the attraction. First, the 16mp resolution is probably about optimum for the 4/3 sensor. This increased resolution also improved low-light (high ISO) performance. Second, the level gauge in the viewfinder is very useful – especially when using the ultra wide lenses. And the compact 14-42 power zoom lens should be great for travel. This lens appears to be about as sharp as my old 14-45 but not as good as the 14 and 20 mm primes. It may be a little soft at the telephoto end, but a 16 x 20 print looks fine. I would also have preferred manual zoom, but the power zoom works OK so far. I did not get the external viewfinder for the new camera. Hardly ever used the one for the GF1 and it makes the camera harder to pack in a bag. Definitely recommend a protective filter – the glass is right there when you remove the lens cap.

I would recommend buying the body only. I expected to have sharp clear pictures exceeding my old camera's results. I find pictures taken with the telephoto lens I bought to go along with this camera are much sharper leading me to believe the lens is the culpret. I got the power zoom but don't like the inconvenient location of the lever. The zoom range isn't very long so it is probably just as easy to do it manually and save the money. I do like the increased resolution and the exposure control. I bought the Lumix because my last two cameras were Lumix and I thought it would be easy for me to learn which it has been. I also bought this camera because of the lighter weight, but if you can handle a heavier camera I would recommend you do so or get a better lens to go with this camera.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

Great camera! Gives complete manual control along with Aperature and Shutter priority. Add to that the ability to apply and modify very creative scene controls allows for your imagination to un wild. Intellegent Auto is amazing when you need to grab a shot in tough lighting situations and you absolutely need to be sure you get a once in a life time shot. Video capabilities are great with MP4 and AVHC.
My only negative comment is that it would be great if the camera had a microphone input jack.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

I wanted the most camera for the money and the little Lumix GX 1 delivers . I am equally pleased wlth the Vario 14-42 ASPH as opposed to the standard kit lens . I like the power o.i. s. features of the lens in spite of it's relatively slow apature . Pictures are sharp . It's compact size allows me to take candid photos with ease . The optional electronic view finder is excellent and allows for a more film like experience . Great value in a compact package !

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

I'm sure this isn't the sharpest lens, but the size is nice and it has been working nicely in the short time I've had it. I bought it to hike with and not have a bulky camera. In it's closest focus mode using the flower icon scene setting it will give about 3" X 3.5" field, close enough for some nice flower closeups I suspect. Auto focus is quite snappy. I bought a couple of adapters from Rainbow Imaging online and can use my old manual 35mm film camera lens' (Nikon and Pentax) with it. 2X crop factor can be good and bad. Good if you want the reach with nice f number. Bad if you would like the wide angle of your old lens. Will meter as aperture preferred or manual using the adapters. Nikon autofocus G lens probably out of the question as no focus ring. If you use an 85mm f1.4 manual Nikon lens or larger you will definitely be holding the outfit by the lens and study with a hand on the smallish camera. I picked up the EyeLevelFinder at the same time and it works nicely.

Great quality photos. Fast auto-focus. Great low light performance. Sturdy build quality. Small lightweight compact size that fits in my pocket. We've wanted a DSLR for years, but knew with the weight and bulk we'd never carry one with us except in special situations. But we can take this one almost anywhere. A delight to use for family and vacation photos. Flash is a bit harsh and limited in range, but low light performance means we usually don't need flash indoors.

As someone who wears a size large size I find the GX1 full of buttons I often hit inadvertently. This is a matter of familiarization with the camera itself and practice with it.

In addition, I did not find the menu items intuitively obvious. Therefore, reading the extensive manual was often necessary, but it's relatively well written and with a good index, answers were usually easy to find.

My first 12X18" print from this camera, a skyline of Chicago, was amazingly sharp and full of detail, despite being taken hand held.

My wife bought me a Canon T3i Rebel for my birthday but I opted to swap it for the mirrorless system and have absolutely no regrets. I sweated the sensor size lack of viewfinder. The sensor size wasn't even worth worrying about and the quality of the shots speak for themselves. As for the viewfinder, every time I pick the camera up, I bring it up to my eye so I'll be buying the accessory viewfinder as soon as my budget affords it.

Since I got an iPhone 2 years ago I all but stopped using my D200, I just never have it with me. I'm traveling a lot now for work and want to be getting better shots than I can get from a phone but don't see myself carrying a big fat SLR. I'm a week into shooting with the GX1 and really liking it a lot. Growing accustomed to the buttons, getting things set up to shoot fast. Its been nice putting raw files with some depth thru Lightroom again. When I grow tired of the 14-42 there is plenty of fast M43 glass to choose from. So far very happy.

This smal 4:3 SLR is light and small enough for travel and studio work. Quality of image is crisp and clean as well as color correct. The only puzzling thing about the camera is why they felt the need to change the live view finder female connection point from the GF-2 system and why there isn't a Time Lapse Shoot mode as with the DMC-TF4.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver):

My wife and I travel for 2 weeks with a carry on and small backpack. I wanted a camera that was light and small enough to put in a jacket or cargo pant pocket for travel and hiking. But I also wanted artistic control, good resolution, RAW data, and sharp lenses. A point and shoot was simply not sophisticated enough, a small DSLR too big, a Leica too expensive. Although I rarely feel the need for a long range zoom, in the future, I wanted the capability. This camera fit the bill. After several hundred photos, I am impressed. The lense is a little slow, but a small gorilla pod worked great in low light. The pictures were sharper at the outer ranges then I expected. I did not have the GX Visio PZ 14-42 clarity problems described in other review sites at 200% on PS: likely it's fixed, maybe I got lucky. The camera is comfortable with my very large hands and feels solid. It won't fit in a shirt pocket, but it was light around the neck, fit in my jacket and was far more accessible than my 300S when traveling. I love my Nikon lenses, but I took pictures that would otherwise have slipped by. A replacement? No. A smaller camera that is still fun to shoot with good results and very few compromises? Yea, this fit the bill. The Sony NEX wasn't much different in size then a Nikon consumer small DSLR matched with one of the kit lenses that I already own, except the Nikon would cost less.

Love the aesthetics, handling, and IQ from the body so far. The PZ 14-42 has a lot of bad buzz regarding blur at the long end. I have not used the PZ 14-42 enough to have an informed opinion yet, so I reserve judgement for now. I hope the lens turns out to be good because a compact, zoom lens is the perfect pairing for the GX1. Also love the pop up flash that can be angled for bounce and I love the touch screen. Touch shutter is great. So glad they omitted a built-in EVF and variable angle LCD. Small size is more important to me. If you want those features, Panasonic can oblige. It's called the G3. Overall, this camera is a great balance between IQ and size. I like it.
