It was fast enough to get a crisp shot of sunset handheld. It also was able to keep focus on my speedy granddaughter in continuous mode in low light. I shot with my Nikon D700. The distortion is corrected in LR3 with one click, but sometimes I leave it because I like the effect. Overall I am very happy with it. It is small and light. I can see it being a staple in my bag.

I purchased this primarily for architectural photography. At the price point compared to other options I knew this lens would be a balance between optics and price. If you use lens correction tools, the wild distortion becomes negligible. If you have to use it wide open, expect softness around the perimeter but stop it down closer to f/8 and it is solid. Very light weight.

Possibly the best travel lens in DX format

  • Rugged
  • Strong Construction

Cons

  • Poor in Low Light

Best Uses

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

I have owned this lens since the 90s, and recently took it as my primary lens for a trip to Panama. I agonized over what to bring, seeking portability and durability, but also versatility. This tight little 20mm (35mm equivalent on my 7100) fits the bill. The 35mm 1.8 DX was the seemingly obvious choice, but I am so glad I went with this old boy instead.

Here's why I love it:
- low profile, lightweight but solid feel
- 2.8 allows for shallow DOF even with a wide angle
- AF is fast and quiet, even with a moving ring
- 70° angle is perfect for placing a subject in a scene
- excellent for street work and candid shots

Only gripe is that at 2.8 its not terrific in low light. For a few shots I needed to use the pop-up for fill in (I put scotch tape over it as a diffuser) and I did do some in-camera HDR in the evenings.

I went practically the entire trip with this lens on the 7100, hanging behind my kidney on a PD leash, a very inconspicuous but powerful tool. I've found my travel kit, for sure. The 50mm 1.4 I brought came in handy for a few "arty" shots, but it wasn't needed to capture the trip.

Highly recommended for travel and street photography. Much preferred to any wide-angle zoom based on size alone, and more interesting than a "normal" lens like a 28 or 35 when the backgrounds are unique (as in, you know, travel).

Aperture blades frozen

By Twice burned

from MO

About Me Semi-pro Photographer

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

I have purchased two of these 20mm lenses over time. BOTH broke down after warranty with the same problem...the aperture blades won't move when the f/stop ring is moved. No abuse or dropping. Independent Nikon repair shop said this is chronic to this lens and that repair is expensive. Wait until a new model of this lens is released before purchase.

Love the size and perspective

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

i have coupled this with a Nikon D750 and this lens is very sharp. I travel a lot and I could not justify the newer alternative which is only 2 stops faster and heavier. The size is great!

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

This lens is spectacular if, and only if, it is shot anywhere from ƒ/8 to ƒ/11 (and the 1/3rd and 1/2 stops in between). That's it. If you plan on shooting outside of that range, expect Chromatic abberation (really bad), very soft focus in the corners, or really bad softness from it being stopped down too much. Now someone may be asking themselves, "why is he recommending it then if it is really only a 2-stop lens?" Because at those two stops (and in between) it performs really, really well! You'll get spectacular results! The results are so good that it makes it worth it to only shoot at that aperture range.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

I bought the lens for my Df, when I was in holidays in NY.

I wanted to have a wider lens (I own the 24 mm AF-D), for landscape and interior use.
I also considered the 20 mm AIS, and the Voigtlander 20 mm AIS-P.
But it was the only one which was available as a sample product, so I was able to try it at the store before buying it.

I like very much the tiny size, the beautiful colors and sharp pictures I have with it on my Df.
I don't mind the moving ring when using autofocus, which is very quick.

This lens seems to be build to last, time will tell (I once fall on a small river with my 24 mm AFD on a FM3A on a trip in iceland in 2004, they still work !!).

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

I use this lens on a D300s, and on a DF.
On DX offers an very nice equivalent 30mm view.
On FX is one of the best wide angle lenses you can have. for the price is amazing. very sharp, fast autofocus, well built and so lightweight that is a joy to carry it around. I love all this D series lenses. made in Japan quality. i love that they look like real lenses. for filters i use an step up ring 62 to 77mm so I can put more than one filter at the time without any worry about vigneting. I recommend to use the optional lens hood to give it a little bit of protection
I recommend it to someone who like to travel, hiking or walking with the camera all day in search of beautiful landscapes and at the same time, want to improve composition using just fixed focal length primes.

First time user and purchase of a wide angle lens. It's size and weight are perfect and make it a joy to carry and shoot with. There is a bit of a learning curve for me, so if you haven't shot wide yet, don't despair, keep trying, the pictures get better and you will have tons of fun. The pictures are sharp and clear and I use it on a Nikon D600 with no issues.

I do Architectural Photography. I have demanding Clients who assume Color Fifelity and Sharpness as matter of course. No F'in round at this level. There is no "Software Save". This Lens is small/Light/sharpa as a Laser and wonderful COLOR rendition..everyone always talks about a Lens "Sharpness" F' Dat!!! How bout it's COLOR and CONTRAST as well. This lens has it. A 20. Not an 8-500....But a good old honest 20...which approximates normal field of view...Isn't that what you want to capture...what's inside your finder?

I had read some not-so-complementary comments about this lens, particularly related to corner softness. Not so. I guess I won the lottery with a particularly great copy of this lens.

I did a lot of real-world test shots with my D700, the "newspaper" test, and the AF calibration Spyder tool test. All were superb. They were surprisingly sharp corner to corner at f/2.8. I did get some very slight vignetteting at f/2.8 but this was easily fixed with ARC or PTlens. The same goes for naturally occurring distortion. I am an architect and I am very fussy about these issues.

The weight and size of this lens make it a pleasure on European trips over my 17-35mm.

Highly recommended if you get a good copy as I did.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

Though this lens is no super glass, it performs well and is very small, light, and robust. Close focus, fixable distortion, and f2.8 make this guy quite usable for CFWA shots. Nikon needs to update this class of primes.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens:

I had to grab a lens for a concert gig at the last minute and this lens became my new primary real quick. Best wide angle you can find under 500
