Comments about D-Link PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch:

This product (and all the D-Link power line adapters) will only work for outlets on the same electrical circuit in your home. I'm not sure why they don't tell you that. How many homes have all the outlets on the same circuit? My guess is none that are built to code. If you're thinking you're going to create a whole house network with this product, think again. You're not. I verified this after waiting 1/2 hour on hold for D-Link tech support. It's a limitation of the technology. Why not tell people and save them the trouble of returning the device? Unbelievable!

Comments about D-Link PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch:

Needed networking from office upstairs on 2nd level down to basement and wifi signal was sketchy even with a repeater. Don't expect to get 500 Mbits from end to end, but hopefully it should be decent throughput depending on your wiring. It doesn't work on power strips for some reason. I installed the software on a laptop and after setting up the devices to talk to each other, I went into the target rooms and checked signal to different outlets. Different outlets perform vastly differently. In the end I got 150 Mbit from the office to the basement in one room and about 80 from the same office to another room in the basement. That's far more than good enough for online video streams.

Software was glitchy. Keep in mind it is not required for installation, but is useful in finding the best performing outlets. I installed it on one laptop with windows7-64 and it didn't run at all. On another laptop it worked. The difference was that the 2nd laptop was behind on patches. I think this is a quality control issue with d-link software development. I tried downloading an updated version from their site, but v1.0 was all that was available. But once it worked, the software was very helpful in determining signal strength. In one case I tested to a quad power outlet and found that throughput was twice as good on upper 2 recepticles than lower 2. Seems to work better if you know where your breaker panel is and the shortest path to get there. My best performance was the shortest path through the breaker panel.

Also note: if you press the connect button on the hardware for a time different from the instructions, it doesn't work - I thought I could press the button for a couple seconds longer just to make sure to make it work, but that turned out to make it not work. 3 seconds means you should press for no more or less than 3 seconds - it isn't that touchy, but you shouldn't hold it for 5 seconds trying to be sure it takes.

My house was built in early 80's (if you'd like to factor in the age of my electrical wiring)

Comments about D-Link PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch:

I bought two of these PowerLine Switches to replace WiFi extender in our apartment which wasn't working very well due to wide concrete walls. I had no problem making connection between the switches, but with the 'remote' switch plugged the 1st power point I tried, the network speed was quite low (red LED was on - best speed is green LED), as this power point was on another circuit breaker. When plugged into a power point on the same circuit, network speed is very satisfactory (green LED on).
