I've bought 5 drives with my new Synology 1513+ and I couldn't be happier. The system is online for 3 weeks and performance of the drives is fantastic. The fact the HGST offers 3 years warranty plus the price point compared to the Seagate 4TB option was the determinant factor for choosing the HGST.When compared to the 4TB 7.2K RPM Deskstar option, for my use case the Coolspin are performing well above my expectations. The 5.9K drive is a good compromise, at the time of my purchase the... premium for the 7.2K per disk was too steep. If you have a Synology these drives will fit the bill and perform really well.

Installed drive in a freshly formatted Win 7 64 bit Pro system with all updated drivers and firmware.

Drive consistently fails and goes offline after a couple minutes of substained I/O such as converting a movie to MP4 etc... Shutting down the machine and powering off and on, the drive returns to the system.

Am running Intel RST at latest levels in a nonRAID simple SATA setup.

I am returning the drive to be replaced as this is not normal behavior. I've not seen this with any other smaller 1 and 2 TB Hitachi drives...even installed in the machine or slots.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

This hard drive developed major problems about a year after purchase, running at a top transfer speed of 5MB/s. I contacted HGST, they told me the serial number of the hard drive is invalid and is not covered by warranty service.

Purchased 4 of these for a critical operation. Ran disk check with 'bad sector' recovery on all four, prior to putting into service. It took a REALLY long time to run the scans, but all of them came out perfect! They all run quiet and cool.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

I am using this as a backup drive (through Superduper) on my Mac Pro. It backs up a WD Black 3 TB and a WD Black 1 TB drive. The drive is silent, fast, and seems to run cool. I have it in a OWC Elite dual drive enclosure with another 2 TB drive. No issues!

The HGST 4 TB drive is supposedly one of the most or the most reliable drive for it's capacity. For the price is it is a bargain.

I have found no negatives about the drive. It just runs.

I installed it on my home server which I use for storing images and videos and I have not heard any spinning or whooshing sounds when there is a heavy I/O and definitely recommended.

4TB for $ is hard to beat, especially when it's made by the company with a history of producing the most reliable hard drives. Yep, it's true... Hitachi for me unless the data changes. Arrived quickly from the USA to Australia. B&H--always reliable and dependable.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

IMO and based on available industry data, the only affordable quiet reliable storage currently available (HGST). Anecdotal personal experience: No DOAs (0 out of 9), no issues. As long as China's anti-monopoly regulators (yes, China's; sad, really...) keep prohibiting WD from consolidating HGST's production lines with their (lower quality) WD lines, these can't be beat for reliability.
These are lower RPM HDDs: great for pictures and videos. Always buy "retail boxed" versions of HDDs if you value reliability (which you obviously do if you are buying these over cheaper HDDs). These also excell at multiple-HDD installations such as media servers, NAS, etc.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

Purchased rather than the cheaper alternatives from WD, Seagate- because of how many bad reviews those drives get. These are more expensive, but have 3yr warrantee rather than 1, and seem to have better reviews (only a couple noted DOA's, etc)

Prepping 5 of these for use. 4 going into a linux software raid5 array, the 5th as a cold spare.

After running 'badblocks' on them, which writes patterns and reads/verifies across the entire drive 4x (taking ~80 hours to complete), there were no bad blocks noted by 'badblocks'- and all of the SMART attributes were acceptable (no reallocated or pending reallocated sectors, etc, etc).

So, I'll say it is 'great' for being reliable (although time will tell more)

The only downside is the cost in comparison to other 4TB drives. But perhaps you get what you pay for in this case, in terms of quality?

I haven't done any extended speed tests, but during badblocks atop was reporting 130-140MB/s at the beginning of the drives and 80-90 at the ends of the drives, if i remember correctly.

Was extremely disappointed because I wanted to get my backup going. B&H has been on the ball with the return and my shipment has been expedited on the way back. Yay! All over reviews seemed overwhelmingly positive, so I cannot ding too harshly for one defective drive.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:
