Like many news photographers I was laid off last October and had to make a switch to something else. Luckily I had seen the writing on the wall several years ahead of time and had already begun the process of becoming a wedding and couples photographer. My goal was to use two cameras, two lenses and the fancy Profoto light I already owned. After doing a pile of research the obvious choice for a second body was the D4 to go along with the D3. I got it a couple weeks ago and started using it straight away for weddings and portraits. The one problem I have is it's so amazing I don't want to shoot with the D3 anymore. I use the two cameras with the Nikon 85mm f1.4g and the 35mm f1.4g. With this camera you can push the ISO out to 6,000 and easily get usable photos. I didn't use the hot shoe camera flash once at a wedding last weekend. The autofocus kills, too. The D3 will hunt back and forth while you miss the low light shot while this rig pops the focus right on the eye - even in super dark situations. Great camera. If you're a professional and can afford it, take the plunge.

Yes, all the 4 and 5 star ratings are highly warranted in the previous reviews and this is a truly great camera. My problem with the D4 is that the two fastest consumer compact flash cards available are not compatible when used together in the camera. I spent the extra dime and purchased a Sony XQD S and card reader. A SanDisk UDMA 7 compact flash card came bundled together with my D4 purchase. Naturally, I put both cards in the camera right out of the box. What occurred next almost had me sending the camera back to B&H.

The first thing that happened when I turned the on camera is that I got a CF Card Error in the display and the camera was locked-up. I was unsuccessful reaching Nikon but was able to speak to a Nikon tech when a B&H technical rep made the call for me. In a conference call, all the Nikon tech support person would say is that the SanDisk UDMA 7 card was not compatible with the camera. In disbelief we hung-up with Nikon and the B&H rep approved a return due to a camera malfunction.

Well that's not quit the end to the story. As it turns out, after quite a bit of internet research, there are various flash card incompatibility problems with the newer Nikon cameras. This is not well known and you will not find anything about it on Nikon's web site. As for the D4, the SanDisk UDMA 7 card is compatible with the camera. However, it cannot be use simultaneously with the Sony XQD card is in the camera. There is a conflict with the 2 fast cards in the camera together, but I can't say why. The UMDA 7 card will work in the camera when the XQD is not in the camera. The funny thing is that a lower speed (approved?) compact flash card will work simultaneously with the Sony QXD in the camera for overflow or combination writing. After my research, I added a SanDisk UMDA 6 and a way old SanDisk CFX card in combination with the Sony card and had no problem. I can only guess that Nikon wants to push the XQD into the high-end camera market.

My advice is to do a little research and image storage planning prior to your purchase of this camera. The XQD S card works just fine and is worth the extra dollars. The SanDisk UDMA 7 works as well when used separately. Although, (as I discovered yesterday while on a shoot using the XQD card) there is still an image load delay with continuous shutter releases. With a buffer display reading 50 frames continuous, I experienced a considerable release delay firing about 90 frames non-contagious over a 48 second period. I suspect this is a card delay and not the buffer.

It remains to be seen if Nikon will continue with XQD card in their next pro body. If so, I certainly hope they fix this short coming. None the less, I want Nikon to develop a fix to the D4 so both fast cards are compatible together and will be contacting them on that behalf. Unlike some of my contemporaries, I am way to far invested in the Nikon system to change now.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

For photography, the D4 is a beast. For videography, stay away from Nikon. I purchased the D4 due to it blazing fast focus in low light but also found out that the videos that this thing produces is far worse than an old Nikon D90. It is easier to switch to Canon and get the 1DX than dealing with the D4 video problem at this point.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I started with Fuji Camera. I switched to Nikon when Fuji discontinued after their S5 and I'm not regretting changing. D4 is my first Nikon Camera and I'm really happen. I specialize in Portraits (Family and Personals) and different coverages (Weddings, Birthdays, Baby Showers,.....)
The only problem I have is that on two occasions, I've had difficulty downloading the pictures (RAW) from the compact flashcard (Sandisk Extreme 32GB). I wonder if there is any compatibility issues. If anybody out there has experienced the same, please let me know your solution. Thanks

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I want to start with.. I have purchased THREE D4s- two, D700s- three, D3s one D2xs and several Cannons Mark 5s for video. I have never had a single problem with any of these cameras.I have loved every single one of my Nikons- My company shoots 75 weddings a year- Until the D4, I have never had an issue. I have one D4 that has been in repair 2 times in row and completely failed 2 times in the middle of 2 weddings- it would stop reading the lenses- got it back, it failed again in 1 hour, the lense started spinning and was unable to be removed from the camera body. sent it back again.. Nikon is charging me over $400 each time its sent it, the camera is almost brand new.. and under warrenty!! The 2nd- D4 I have, less then 1 year old- just started having problems- the view finder is not working properly- My D4 has problems- It is very sad for - The camera Is AMAZING when its working to full speed- I have invested over $200k in Nikon in the last 8 years and do not plan to leave- I explained to Nikon- I got a lemon maybe, HELP!!Can I get a replacement PLEASE!! they are not helping - It feels terrible. I cannot beleive I am paying for the repairs to this first Camera twice and need to send the 2nd one in for repairs- Its wedding season and we have 3 weddings a week for the next 3 months I cannot afford to have Cameras failing- espesially the brand new ones- I am pretty dissapointed in Nikon for the first time

I am a hobby photographer who is the 'volunteer photographer' for all of my kids' sports teams and theater productions. Most of this is indoor, no-flash photography (dive, cheer, gymnastics, dance, musicals) and it's hard as heck to get a good shot with no limb blur. I have only had this camera for about a week, but I shot my first gymnastics meet last night and FINALLY got the photos that I have been trying to get for years. I still have a lot to learn and I have only read about half of the user manual, but I am sure that as I grow, this camera will be able to do whatever I ask of it and more.

I waited a while to upgrade to the Nikon D4. I own a D600 and D700 and have been a Nikon user for 40+ years. The Nikon D4 is everything that Nikon has said about it and more.It is phenomenal in low light situations and the frames per second rock. I shoot a lot of sports and the NCAA does not allow on camera flash in most shooting situations. Most gymnasiums for mens and women's basketball are not the best in lighting and this is where the D4 excels. The Nikon D4 allows me to capture the images I need in low light and moderate ISO's.If you are doing sports and editorial work this is the only camera to have

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I use the D4/D800 combo to shoot sports, product, wedding and architecture
              photography!
I can honestly say i had the D800 & D800E as my camera and backup camera,
but the more i got into sports i got pushed into needing the FPS of the D4.
I originally purchased the D4 planning on really just using it for sports and big weddings, but honestly it has turned into my main camera since the day i turned it on.
I love the feel and handling of this camera compared to my D800s with Grips.
I constantly find myself using the FPS during the the big moments at weddings and the low light is simply amazing as im sure any D3/D4 owners know!
The XQD card had me a little irritated in the beginning but honestly the speed and durability of them has grown on me!
The AF is simply outstanding! 10fps and every frame is perfectly in focus EVERY time!
I cannot say enough about this camera!
If you truly need the FPS and you constantly find yourself shooting in very low light(think reading by candlelight low) and your job relies on you getting that perfect shot regardless of weather, lighting,or movement surrounding the subject, the D4 would be my first choice! But honestly i shoot all my architecture, products and landscapes with my D800, i did at least 20-30 weddings with the D800 & D800E combo absolutely no problem! The biggest difference with the D4 here is being able to shoot in alot of shots with my 24-70 2.8 that with the D800 i would be using my 50/85 1.4s....aswell as being able to gun down the " you may kiss the bride" and "cutting the cake" with the D4 ha!

I use this for people shots and sports like Rugby and surfing .. I especially like how they did the zoom feature for reviewing pics to confirm sharpness and overall quality. Its way more efficient than say the D3x which I also own. Zooming in and out of a shot is just one button push either way. Also the way they organized the AF-C and AF-S functions i think are better. Love the ergonomics and grip. Now Im shooting with the AF-S 300 F4 ED and it seems to be pretty fast auto focus. Have not yet tried low-light auto focus or the video. Love the 10 fps when I need coverage. On the down side: I wish they had left the WB indicators as numbers and not used the icons for daylight, tungsten, etc .... The icons are just not legible. I can see numbers much easier. Overall I would easily buy another one and just may here in the next few months.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Wow. Great upgrade from the D2X. I love the full frame but need to get used to it. All my older lenses work, even the MF ones. A bit big and for my hands to reach all the controls intuitively but that's just fine, the pluses far out weigh that drawback.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I use this primarily for wedding and portrait photography. I had bought the D800 to upgrade from my D300s and wanted to get the D4, but many recommended that unless I was a sports or wildlife photographer, it was too much. Now that I have had it for a month now and used it on several sessions, I wish I had bought it to begin with. It is stellar, and how fast it can write to the XQD card blows away the fastest CF cards I had in my D800. The ISO capabilities allow me to push the limits in low lighting situations. The file size of the RAW images makes it worth the extra price also.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I'm a full time professional photographer, so I depend on my gear to perform consistently and reliability under some occasionally adverse conditions. The Nikon D4 fits the bill. Fast and accurate focus tracking for the NCAA sports I shoot, great image quality, built like a tank. I really wish Nikon had designed it to use the D3 and D3s batteries, and additional batteries are way overpriced. I've tried third party batteries, but none have proven reliable, so I suggest staying with Nikon, even with the price gouging. Love the new XQD card capability. If you depend on your camera to pay the bills and you have a D3 or older, this is a no-brainer. If you have a D3s in good working condition, then upgrading to the D4 isn't as clear-cut unless you really need specific features the D4 offers.

I'm a wedding photographer and I desperately needed an upgrade (I upgraded from a Nikon D700) in ISO for evening/reception shots because I don't use flash very often. The higher ISO images were clear and it allow me to use more ambient light because of it. In addition, the image quality is far superior. This was an investment piece for me and it was worth every penny.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I use this camera for sports, news and weddings. I think everyone knows the good parts about this camera so I will spare you that and tell you what I don't like. The LCD seems like it is not sharp unless you zoom in on the picture during playback. The LCD also has an inaccurate color balance. Both of these things combined make you worry if you got the shot or not all the way until you upload them to your computer. Also the updated autofocus system seems to backfocus in AF-C Auto and 3D mode way more often than it should for a $[$] camera. Video quality is also so-so. These things make it frustrating to shoot with but when it works the way it should it is a fantastic camera.
