I just received this lens and I must say that I am very impressed with everything about it. In spite of its all metal construction, it is incredibly light. The fit and finish is nothing less than I have come to expect from Fuji in general; excellent. When I mounted the lens on my XPro 1 and pressed the shutter release button, the lens responded and acquired focus immediately. The images delivered by this lens are tack sharp and the color is spot-on. The booked is smooth and pleasing to the eye. There is also just the right amount of wide angle distortion for close-ups and street photography. This is a lens that forces you to get in a little closer than you might be comfortable but the results are well worth the effort! there is only one improvement that might be considered, it would to change the shape and size of the aperture ring for us photogs who are blessed with big hands. All in all, this is an excellent piece of gear and definitely a keeper.

Good image quality that's about it. I really wanted to like this lens. But the built feels cheap. The aperature ring isn't smooth when ticking over f-stops. The focus by wire design feeling like its constantly trying to catch up with itself. The auto focus even after firmware update did not help with these issues. Too many missed shots. I returned this lens.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

This is a great little lens. It could use an update for AF speed, but for what it is it's a fantastic tool when I'm concerned about size.

When I'm not, I reach for the 16mm.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I recently purchased the 18mm f/2.0 as my first prime lens to use with the Fuji XT-10. I would highly recommend this lens to other customers.

As someone who travels a great deal and also shoots architectural models, size is a great concern. The 18mm, while not quite a "pancake," is quite small and perfectly proportioned for Fuji's mirrorless range. It is hefty without being heavy - belying its tight, all-metal construction - and feels great in-hand.

The construction is solid throughout, and the mechanics are very smooth and precise. with a few caveats. The aperture ring snaps pleasingly at 1/3 increments, but I find it easier to turn the ring from some hand positions than others. The manual focus ring turns smoothly and is very satisfying. However, it will turn continuously even when you are beyond the focal range of the lens; I with that it would stop at either end of the lens' limitation. There is, occasionally, a small "rough patch" when turning the focus ring, but this has no real bearing on performance.

The lens focuses quickly and is a perfect compliment to the updated suite of autofocus options in the X-Series lineup.

The 18mm gives you an effective range ~27mm with the Fuji's cropped sensors, which is quite a pleasing range for "street," architectural and indoor photography. It makes a nice "standard" lens especially when traveling. Images are crisp across the frame, bright, and the lens performs better than I could have expected in low-light. I stick mostly to the f/2.0 for its shallow depth of field which, while not best-in-class, is quite pleasing.

The package comes with a lens hood and two accompanying lens caps (for the hood and lens body). The lens body hood is plastic with a squeeze release which is a little on the small side, and I am not convinced of its stability. The lens hood cap is a rubbery plastic that I prefer, but it fell off of my lens on the second day so I cannot speak highly of its grip.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

This is an all around great lens to travel with. Its size is also great and doesn't get in the way. Can't complain about the IQ considering size and price. Only complaint is that the aperture ring doesn't feel right due to the size. I think it would help if there was a thumb tab or some kind of bump-out on the aperture ring.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I want to compare this lens to the 27mm pancake lens, not because of its focal qualities, but because of its size. It's just a little larger than the 27mm, but it's a much, much, nicer lens. The aperture ring is nice and stiff, but I don't care for how the grip of the ring does not extend all the way around the barrel. I suppose Fujifilm had to design it this way to make room for the engraved aperture markings. Focusing is quiet and the focus ring is smooth when in manual mode. There is little to no light fall-off at the edges, and very little distortion, which is really nice for architectural and landscape shots.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I only have my initial thoughts, but so far the lens is everything i expected- small, solid, great field of view, and great IQ. It's a little strange that the barrel actually extends a little during focusing, but it's not too noticeable. Construction is as solid as the other Fuji X lenses, so no surprises. Only 2 dings - the lens hood and its cap are big and don't work well, and i wish it was weather sealed to match the X-T1.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I'm using this as the "normal" lens for my Fuji X-E2. It is very small and compact and reliably focuses quickly. I like the fact that I can maintain a low profile while shooting in very public places like street markets, outdoor festivals etc. A great focal length for street photography and it is fast enough at f2.0 to use in artificial light. I really like the engraved f-stop numbers on the aperture ring. Being a long time manual film camera guy, I like the fact that as I'm bringing the camera up to face level to shoot, just a quick glance at the top of the camera gives me the current aperture and shutter speed settings. My only reservation is that it does not have image stabilization. but with this short focal length, I can do without.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I hesitated between this and the XF27mm as I wanted something small and discreet. As my intended use was all-purpose travel, I decided to go wider and get the extra f/stop for the increased possibilities of handheld photography in low light.

I had read many reviews complaining about distortion, and to check I went to Flickr and 500px, searching for Fuji xf18mm and cityscapes. When I was able to verify that two shots were of the same scene, one highly distorted and the other not, It became clear that it was the positioning of the focusing plane with respect to the subject that made all the difference in apparent distortion. Used with care, this lens produces minimal distortion. That care just involves 5 extra seconds looking at what you're seeing in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen before pressing the shutter.

The lens also works well for quick shooting: autofocus is fast and accurate. I love that it focuses so closely, which makes it great for discreet available light travel shots of food in restaurants.

When taking pictures of people against an iconic tourist background, or when taking environmental portraits, you need to take care to be far enough away to not introduce distortion on faces. Again, if you play with the angle of the focusing plane, even when you cannot back up further, you can reduce distortion before shooting.

With that one caveat--look before you click--you will love the images created by this lens. Sharp edges, beautiful color and contrast. Just head to a photo sharing site and see for yourself.

P.S. If you use a protector filter, get the Fuji one. It has the most beautiful glass I have ever seen in a filter, and it is amazingly static-fee. I almost never have to use a lens cloth on it.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

This has probably been my most used lens over the last year or so. One important reason is the classic wide angle focal length of 18mm (27mm), which is my preference in many situations. For me the compact size and light weight counts as well. The 23mm is no doubt optically superior to this lens, but you pay for it in size and weight. Anyway, if this is the worst Fujifilm could come up with optically in a prime lens, it says a lot about the overall quality of their lineup.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

F stops click firmly. My 35 1.4 is too smooth. This 18 feels better in my opinion. I feel that this is too wide. The better lens might be the 23mm, but that lens is very big and more expensive. If you want a very compact wide angle, this is the best choice.

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

I had Fujinon lenses when I used 4x5. The lenses with the Fujifilm E series cameras are equally as good. I am very impressed and pleased with the quality I am getting from the E-100. It comes close to my Canon 5D MkII!! and I would say that the high ISO's are even better. In the digital world, as with film cameras, the lenses make a huge difference in the quality you get.

I use this lens with my X-Pro1. It is lightweight, compact, and very sharp! A great carry around or travel lens. I have no complaints and would definitely recommend this lens to anybody with an X series camera.

Having moved from a full frame camera to the Fuji X system, I was worried that a good quality wide angle would be hard to find... I was wrong.

This lens is fantastic, fast to focus, great IQ and a perfect wide solution for my new Fuji kit without destroying my bank account!!!

                      Optical excellence

Comments about Fujifilm 18mm f/2.0 XF R Lens:

After reading the tests actual reviewers had written I was ready to give this lens a whirl. Some may think it odd that one would buy into the Fuji X system just to get the lenses, but that is pretty much what I did. I am happy with my choices, Fuji optics have a well deserved reputation.
