Over the years I've used two camera systems - high end DSLR and top notch lenses as well as other mid-range systems - primarily better quality 'point and shoots'. I am an admitted Fuji-fan, having many of their digital cameras over the years (and hanging on to them). I became quite interested in the X-System when it first came out, and decided to buy the X-E1 with the 18-55 'kit' lens. I was certainly impressed - not only with the camera, but with the quality of the lens - to the point where I decided to sell off some of my DSLR gear. I also purchased the 55-200 lens which is also top-notch. After some research, I decided to buy a prime - either the 14mm or the 35/1.4 With all the excellent reviews and feedback I knew I couldn't go wrong with either, so I decided on the 35/1.4. Many times I like to shoot in low-light as well as controlling the DOF on portrait shots. Given the crop factor on the APS-C sensor, this is pretty much a 'normal' viewing lens. This is the best non-full frame lens I've ever owned and certainly challenges the bokeh of many of the DSLR lenses costing at least twice as much. The build quality is excellent, and I am very happy with this purchase. I am a non-professional, but like having the best quality equipment that I can afford. This lens satisfies that requirement.

I traded my Canon 6D and great quality glass in for a X-E2 with three Fuji lenses, the 14mm, 35mm and the 55-200. I did this because I picked up an x100s and loved it. The 6D with my Sigma 35mm 1.4mm lens was a pixel peepers dream. Tack sharp, great color and contrast rendering, absolute magic came out of that combo. And while the x100s was technically inferior in almost every way, and lacking quite a bit of the magic pop factor, after walking around for two weeks and tacking tons of side by side comparisons, something dawned on me. The 6D was much better with low light, the Sigma much sharper wide open and stopped down, but at the end of the day, when I went to make 13x19" prints with my Pixma Pro-100 printer, nobody could tell the different between which camera was which. Right then I decided that while the Canon 6D is a technically superior camera, it wasn't worth the weight, bulk, expense, conspicuousness, etc.

Now my transition to the full on, full time Fuji setup has been a bit of a mixed bag. My images are generally speaking, not making me happy quite the same way they used to with the Canon. The good images are a little less good, and they seem a little less consistent to come by. I find the gear incredibly fun to use, way more so than the Canon, and I do feel like I'm getting more and more used to it and steadily getting more keeper quality images.

I initially HATED this lens. I almost sent it back and traded it in for the Zeiss 32mm. If I hadn't of had a bunch of unexpected expenses all pop up at once I probably would have. Compared to the Sigma 35mm 1.4 this lens is soft wide open, lacks character, renders color somewhat poorly and has blah contrast and micro contrast. It is way too soft and close focusing distances. It really doesn't suit how I want to shoot at all. I generally like the 35mm focal length more than 50 (what this is about equivelent to). When I shoot this focal length I want subject isolation, lots of out of focus elements, close focusing to highlight a feature or two and add to the bokeh. This lens is not good at this. If I want more things in focus and/or more environment, I'm going to go with the x100s and the 35mm equivelent focal length every time. BUT, I needed a fast lens, and everyone else on the planet seems to love this lens to I decided to keep it and see if over time I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about.

Over the weekend I shot a live concert, and I started to get it. Obviously the aperture was a big bonus in a poorly lit space, but it actually performed better than expected. Then just yesterday I snapped a quick pic of a friend at his new apartment, and to my surprise, tack sharp, with good subject isolation (albeit at f1.8 and not wide open). I hate buying fast lenses and then not be able to use them effectively wide open, it defeats the purpose to me. So far this seems to do much better at 1.8 than 1.4. I still need a few more months to hopefully figure this lens out and make a final determination. But after a month or so, it is by far my least favorite of the bunch. The few shots I got with this lens this past weekend though, give me hope that the first month has been user error. Time will tell

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I am a 50mm or nifty fifty shooter when using my full frame DSLR as I was with my old film cameras. So the 35 Fuji is right up my alley when mounted on the Fuji X Pro-1.

Image quality is superb but that is pretty much expected.

You simply can't go wrong with this lens.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This lens actually get me to love Fujifilm. It is a small lens with great image quality. The price is fair. However, the lens is loud and is external focusing. So expect dust to build in quick. The rubber lens hood is loose. It falls off every time I took it out of my bag. You have to leash it to prevent loosing it.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I really like the image quality and construction of this lens. I felt like the aperture ring was a bit stiff and sticky. I didn't realize when I purchased it that it only went to f/16 and the lens cap kept falling off. Like another reviewer I felt like the depth of field could have been better, AF was slow and noisy compared to my 18-55. Not as good as my Nikon 35 f1.8. Overall it's a good lens but I returned mine.

Five star lens with one star hood that does not reverse to fit over the lens barrel and is difficult to use with a polarizer. The Nikon folding rubber hood is a better choice for field use.

All the accolades this lens gets it deserves. This is on my Fuji X-E1 most of the time. It is lightweight, excellent build, sharp (but good bouquet when stopped open), great IQ. It is a bit slow to autofocus on puppies or kids (maybe some sports) but for all else it satisfies. I have no qualms recommending this lens as a great "normal" length prime for Fuji X camera owners.

Works great as a "normal" lens on my X-E1 camera. Very sharp corner to corner and good in low light conditions, although focusing can be slow in very dim conditions.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This was my first lens when I get in to the X-system. Later, I have bought the 23mm, 14mm and 27mm. This lens is still my favourite. I still can't believe how small it is for an f/1.4 lens. Sharpness is excellent. It is not as good as the 23mm but that's is because the 23mm an extraordinary lens, not because this lens is poor-quality. I have never seen an occasion where the sharpness led any photo to be unusable, or any less good.

After a while, I sold my 23mm/1.4 because this lens is so small and lightweight that I was always leaving 23mm at home. Yes, it is a different focal length but the difference is usually one or two steps back.

The reason I have bought 27mm because I wanted a lens that is even smaller. I have noticed that, the smaller and lighter the camera, the more I am willing to take it anywhere I go.

I am not planning to sell this lens. Right now, I am using it mainly for portraits. (I have 14mm for landscapes and 27mm for casual photography) I am not planning to upgrade to 56mm/1.2 because of the size, price and the weight.

If you are just starting up, this lens is all you need.

Not a terrible lens, but for being f/1.4, I expected a better depth of field and creamier bokeh. Works as expected in low light, but terrible with moving subjects. I returned it within a week and went back to my Canon L-Series lenses.

This is the lens for almost everything (except macro). Focus better than the 18-55 and it's nice to have the aperture numbers on the ring. It's crystal clear and the colours are lovely.
I use it on the X-E1 and with that combination, you're never far away from the right spot.

Love this lens. I have the 18-55 and the 55-200. This is the one that stays on the camera.

I use this as a normal lens on my camera. The picutures are very sharp, the build quality is great, and the low light capability is very nice to have. I wouldn't change anything about this lens.

Fast, sharp, quick focusing, acceptable size and weight, real aperture ring... Look at the testing reviews against Zeiss glass. There's no reason to get anything else in this length. Skirts the line between a casual all-around lens and a portrait lens, great for shots of small groups of people 15-25 feet away or a tight shot of a single person at closer range.

I tested this lens again a Leica 35 mm Summicron f/2.0 ASPH that I have and the Fuji lens seem to out perform the Leica. Could be the Fuji Auto Focus is Spot on and my manual focusing of the Leica is slightly off.
