Over the years I've used two camera systems - high end DSLR and top notch lenses as well as other mid-range systems - primarily better quality 'point and shoots'. I am an admitted Fuji-fan, having many of their digital cameras over the years (and hanging on to them). I became quite interested in the X-System when it first came out, and decided to buy the X-E1 with the 18-55 'kit' lens. I was certainly impressed - not only with the camera, but with the quality of the lens - to the point where I decided to sell off some of my DSLR gear. I also purchased the 55-200 lens which is also top-notch. After some research, I decided to buy a prime - either the 14mm or the 35/1.4 With all the excellent reviews and feedback I knew I couldn't go wrong with either, so I decided on the 35/1.4. Many times I like to shoot in low-light as well as controlling the DOF on portrait shots. Given the crop factor on the APS-C sensor, this is pretty much a 'normal' viewing lens. This is the best non-full frame lens I've ever owned and certainly challenges the bokeh of many of the DSLR lenses costing at least twice as much. The build quality is excellent, and I am very happy with this purchase. I am a non-professional, but like having the best quality equipment that I can afford. This lens satisfies that requirement.

I traded my Canon 6D and great quality glass in for a X-E2 with three Fuji lenses, the 14mm, 35mm and the 55-200. I did this because I picked up an x100s and loved it. The 6D with my Sigma 35mm 1.4mm lens was a pixel peepers dream. Tack sharp, great color and contrast rendering, absolute magic came out of that combo. And while the x100s was technically inferior in almost every way, and lacking quite a bit of the magic pop factor, after walking around for two weeks and tacking tons of side by side comparisons, something dawned on me. The 6D was much better with low light, the Sigma much sharper wide open and stopped down, but at the end of the day, when I went to make 13x19" prints with my Pixma Pro-100 printer, nobody could tell the different between which camera was which. Right then I decided that while the Canon 6D is a technically superior camera, it wasn't worth the weight, bulk, expense, conspicuousness, etc.

Now my transition to the full on, full time Fuji setup has been a bit of a mixed bag. My images are generally speaking, not making me happy quite the same way they used to with the Canon. The good images are a little less good, and they seem a little less consistent to come by. I find the gear incredibly fun to use, way more so than the Canon, and I do feel like I'm getting more and more used to it and steadily getting more keeper quality images.

I initially HATED this lens. I almost sent it back and traded it in for the Zeiss 32mm. If I hadn't of had a bunch of unexpected expenses all pop up at once I probably would have. Compared to the Sigma 35mm 1.4 this lens is soft wide open, lacks character, renders color somewhat poorly and has blah contrast and micro contrast. It is way too soft and close focusing distances. It really doesn't suit how I want to shoot at all. I generally like the 35mm focal length more than 50 (what this is about equivelent to). When I shoot this focal length I want subject isolation, lots of out of focus elements, close focusing to highlight a feature or two and add to the bokeh. This lens is not good at this. If I want more things in focus and/or more environment, I'm going to go with the x100s and the 35mm equivelent focal length every time. BUT, I needed a fast lens, and everyone else on the planet seems to love this lens to I decided to keep it and see if over time I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about.

Over the weekend I shot a live concert, and I started to get it. Obviously the aperture was a big bonus in a poorly lit space, but it actually performed better than expected. Then just yesterday I snapped a quick pic of a friend at his new apartment, and to my surprise, tack sharp, with good subject isolation (albeit at f1.8 and not wide open). I hate buying fast lenses and then not be able to use them effectively wide open, it defeats the purpose to me. So far this seems to do much better at 1.8 than 1.4. I still need a few more months to hopefully figure this lens out and make a final determination. But after a month or so, it is by far my least favorite of the bunch. The few shots I got with this lens this past weekend though, give me hope that the first month has been user error. Time will tell

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Great prime lens, using it on my Fujifilm X-T10. Made in Japan. Really wish it had OIS (optical image stabilization) because taking it on the streets is hard (blurry photos). As it goes with Fuji cameras, auto-focus is slow and keeps readjusting.

Beautiful images when you have low light and when you want little focus.
Automatic focus is not very fast with de xt1, but fast enough. Size and weight are really great if you want something small.

This lens is a solid performer, with beautiful bokeh wide open, which is usually how I shoot with it. The AF is a little slow, but otherwise I wasn't disappointed.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I think the best way to characterize this incredible lens is to say that it is realistic. Is it sharp? Yes...it is very sharp but not in the way the Fujinon 23mm is. The 23 is best described as razor sharp. The images scream SHARP ! By comparison the 35mm is very sharp but in a way that does not come across as overbearing or artificial. Using the 35mm is like enjoying the company of a Nobel Prize winning physicist during a cocktail party, one who is not intent on strutting his smarts but rather who wants to show you a good time. I hope that makes sense to you, for this is truly a good time lens !

The lens is really fast and image it creates is sharp, great for planned shooting.

But it's 35mm on a crop sensor, you have to stand a little far away from your subject, but once you get used to that, it really can give you nice images and does isolate subject with great bokeh and stuff. Day-to-day shooting? No problem.

Fuji XF 35mm and 56mm spectacular

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Bought a used Fuji X100 from my son in October. So impressed I decided to ditch my current system. Motivated by the pre-XPro2 price drop in the XPro1 body and Holiday discounts on XF lenses, I bought the 35mm/1.4 and the 56mm/1.2. Wow. Excellent all around. My son was so impressed he now has gone out and gotten a XPro1 and XF wide angle, ironically more or less duplicating what he sold me with the X100. Shutter in 35mm is a bit noisy but in the field you don't hear it, and even if you did the resulting photos quality are so great one is 100% forgiving. Worth every penny -- even a post-Holiday prices

Only reason I gave it 4 stars is the lack of OIS and no WR.

This lens is on my camera all the time. It's fast, light and produces amazing photos. There is just one small weakness that comes to mind. The front lens cap has a weak grip for some reason. I'm always concerned about it & afraid do loose it. I can never tell if it's attached well or not. Other than that, this lens makes you feel super powerful! It's just superb!

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This lens convinced me to hang on to my X-T1. I originally bought the 14, 23, and 56, and although they were all great and extremely sharp, none of them really left me with that "wow" that my X100 series did. There are quite a few web reviews out there and most criticize the noisy and slow focus. Yes, it's noisier and maybe a bit slower that the newer lenses, but to me, it seems relative. I find it responsive enough for what I do and my keeper percentage is better than any of my dslr's.

Between this len's characteristics/optical formula and Fuji's out-of-camera jpegs, this combo (35mm XF and the X-T1) renders amazing images. This lens truly has soul.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I wanted to get a 35mm lens for street photography to go with my X Pro1 so I ordered this one and for the most part. I am very impressed with it. The lens reproduces colors faithfully and is tack sharp for the images I have taken with it. The auto focus is very close to being as fast as my D300 Nikon with a similar focal length lens and the diminutive size of the lens makes it a pleasure to carry around on a long day of shooting. The only reason I knocked a star off my rating was the grunting of the AF motor and the chattering of the aperture leaves when they adjust themselves. Don't get me wrong, The noise is not going to rattle any windows but it is definitely noticeable to the photographer. I've heard from other owners of this lens that a firmware update would quiet it down, but all of my firmware is up to date. I still like the lens and intend to keep it, so it looks like I will learn to ignore the sound effects.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Who needs another five star review about this lens? Well, let me just add a few things from my perspective as a recent user. Before this, I spent about a year running around with the 27mm on my X-T1, and I absolutely loved the discreet and unobtrusive look and feel of that lens. What the 35mm now adds to my experience (along with a very slightly "longer" camera) is a totally natural focal length that is practically identical to the human eye. The distance to your subject before you lift the camera to your eye is the one you'll end up capturing. Then there's that magic number 1.4, which leads to the shallow depth of field we all crave so much, and that Japanese word, starting with the letter B that I refuse to use. (You won't hear me refer to my lenses as "glass" either! You're welcome.) Early complaints about this 35mm have included noise, which I find slightly ridiculous. Yes, you hear tiny little noises sometimes. Big deal. There have also been occasional qualms having to do with "hunting". That's over, folks. Firmware 4.0. Fujifilm respects their customers, and they keep improving. The one thing that takes me by surprise every once in a while is that even a shutter speed of 4000 can be too slow in bright sunlight to keep the lens wide open. If it weren't for that bit of physics, I'd leave this thing on "1.4" all the time! That's how much I enjoy the gorgeous … … well, you know what I mean.

I recently purchased this lens to use with my Fuji system. I purchased a X-T1 with the standard 18-55 lens and was very impressed with its performance. After reading how great the XF 35 lens performs, I thought I should see what others stated about this lens. It is very sharp and has excellent contrast and colors. I have been a pro photographer for over 25 years and I have been lucky enough to use some of the best glass through the years. I feel that this lens rivals any of the lenses I have previously used. The focus is not super fast, but it accurate.

this is my first SLR lens. I am still trying to play with it and get use to the manual adjustment. As far as the quality of the picture, it looks great.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Light, small, sharp, great colors. When I first bought it I wasn't all that impressed. It can hunt to focus. Then a B&H rep reminded me to do the firmware update on the camera and after that, I grew to like this lens a lot. There are times when I'd like the 23mm, but this one is much less expensive, and I like to get close up on faces, so this serves me well. It's a great value. My only other lens is the kit one for the X-T10. That's a pretty good lens for the kit, but this one stays on much of the time. I love the way it handles light, especially in background to subject.

Super sharp, feels like quality, amazing bokah...no need to go full frame..the low light performance is one reason I bought this an I have had limited time to use it at night but what I have do looks good.
