Sorry this is long winded but if you plan to use XQD with MAC please read. After speaking with Sony for an hour and a half and Apple for an hour I need to share the following compatibility issue with the MRW-E80. The MRW-E80 is rated at a maximum data speed of 125 MB/s. However on a brand new iMac i7 quad core using the latest OS 10.8.2 the card downloaded at only 4 MB/s. Using this card reader and a Sony 32 GB XQD series H card it took 2 HOURS and 20 minutes to down load to the iMAC.I tried the MRW-E80 on my wifes year old i7 Windows PC and it downloaded at 67 MB/s. Sony tells me they have an accelerated driver for Windows but not for MAC. Apple tells me this is a Sony issue. Note: as a test I transferred the same data that is on the XQD card from a hard drive to the iMAC and it did fine at 190 MB/s. And I also transferred the same data from an SDHC class 10 card with a USB 2.0 card reader and it tested out at 20 MB/s. This reader would likely work much better on a Mac if it had a Thunderbolt connection. 2 hours is crazy slow. I have never rated a product this low before but I feel I need to let you know.

Compared to my other SD and CF readers this is much faster. It should be too, the read speeds on my cards are 3.5x faster than my others.

    Reads Lexar 128GB 2933x

Comments about Sony XQD Card Reader:

Just purchased two 128gb 2933x (440mbs) from B&H during their Lexar sale, I am glad to report and share to others that this XQD card images ingest from my D4s into photo mechanic and this Sony reader on a MacPro running 10.9.5 and USB 3. I have used this Sony reader with my Sony S series 64gb XQD cards (180mbs) for a few years. There is a lot of info out there that says that you Have to use a faster/newer reader for the newer XQD cards, so I was pleased that this was not the case. This reader seems backward compatible, but I can't verify if it is reading at 440mbs.

So I am glad that this reader works until the new Sony reader starts to ship. The Sony specs on the new reader are available on their site.

Comments about Sony XQD Card Reader:

Generally, I've had good luck with Sony products. This anomally (I hope) let me down. Fast reader until it stopped working after about a year. Had sporatic problems with the interface until it finally stopped working entirely. Switched cables, tried different cards, nothing brought it back to life. Disappointing.

Comments about Sony XQD Card Reader:

I bought this reader because my old MBP with a PCMCIA slot died and the newer models no longer have the slot to use an adapter. The reader simply does what it is built for, getting files off a card into the computer quickly. It feels good in the hand with the right amount of heft to it so I would expect it to last.

There were some misinformation online when I was researching about this reader and the Lexar XQD cards. Some people said that they are not compatible and that it cannot read the Lexar cards. Others have said that this reads all XQD cards, and I thought why would a specific card reader not read a specific card? So I bought it and it worked perfectly with all my cards at super fast speeds.

I have a Lexar XQD reader but after going on a photo trip and discovering I had left the Lexar at home. Borrowed one from another photographer on the trip and liked it. It is smaller and as fast or faster and uses a more universal USB 3.0 cable. I would definitely recommend this one over the Lexar.

Finally I broke down and bought this card reader because the direct connection from the camera was not fast enough. The reader works as advertised and noticably faster than the direct connection.

Important: Connect the reader to a primary USB port! Don't even try a hub or a built-in card reader that also has a USB port.
