Comments about Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS Lens:

This very compact lens allows me to use my SLR almost anywhere as I would do with a small point and shoot. I've used the DA 40mm XS on my old Pentax K10D that has now found a new live as a camera for vacation and any situation when you don't want to transport a big camera-lens kit. Because the Pentax bodys are small, it's easy to put it in your pocket. The 40 mm with the 1.5X factor is perfect for many situations (portrait, landscape...) Only two small cons : it gives a bizarre look to your camera and the lens hood is not thightly attached.

Comments about Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS Lens:

I am just a photography enthusiast. The only things that are important to me in terms of lenses are how the pictures look and does the lens impede my shot.

The first thing you'll notice about this lens is that it is tiny. It takes up almost no space in your bag and it weighs almost nothing. There is no reason not to bring it along on any shoot. It is so liberating to have this on your DSLR! The 40mm focal length reminds me of the 35mm Kodak Instamatic I had as a kid. It gives me near-WYSIWYG shots and you can be in social distance of your subject.

I had this lens on my Pentax K-5 while I spent the day with my daughter. I took hundreds of shots, both indoors (fluorescent light) and outdoors on a sunny day. I should disclose that I brought all the photos into Lightroom 4 and I don't know if it made any corrections to my photos or not. Frankly, I don't care. The results were gorgeous! The colors popped. The details were sharp. And the depth of field with this lens is really fun. I captured a shot of my daughter where an object she was holding in front of her was out of focus and the background was also out of focus, drawing the eye right to my subject. I was also able to capture her jumping off of playground equipment in mid-air and launching a model rocket. In short, this lens does NOT get in my way. If my shots are bad it's a user error.

My only wish is that this lens would be weather-sealed. I want to take this lens on a canoeing trip. I know the K-5 won't flinch but this lens just isn't in that class.

In any case, this is a great utility lens at a great price. I didn't notice any flaws and, even in full sun, the lack of a lens hood didn't cause problems. The friction-based lens cap never popped-off accidently.

If I had to come up with a negative thing to say it's that the lens might be difficult to interchange due to its size. It's so small there isn't much to grip during the swap. However, the benefits of that size far outweigh the cost.
