I initially bought the Pentax K-01 for one primary reason -- because it was cheap. My basic justification was that it would be a backup to my K-5, giving me a means to shoot in the event that the K-5 was out for cleaning or repairs. Furthermore, the K-01 has some interesting features not available on the K-5. These include focus peaking and enhanced video support. It is also nice that the K-01 that will never require calibration between the PDAF, sensor and viewfinder (near perfect on my K-5, but not without effort). After the initial unboxing, my first impressions of the camera were not great. Build quality was nice, but the ergonomics were off and felt quite a bit worse than the K-5 (more on this later). I was slightly disappointed, but at the cheap price, things were still going to plan. After upgrading the firmware to V1.01 the autofocus improved notably. I felt things were headed in a positive direction. Then I turned on focus peaking and discovered this camera's hidden charm. My early mistake was to put this camera in the DSLR class and compare it to the K-5 and others. In this class, the K-01 does not do well. But expectations are a huge part of satisfaction and I found that if I treat the camera as a modern "rangefiner", then suddenly I find myself holding one of the most fun cameras I have shot with, with excellent image quality to boot! What is the secret? For starters, turn on focus peaking. Step two is to find a fast prime lens with nice manual focus. I recommend the Pentax "A" series, with the 50mm 1.7 being my lead suggestion because it is fast and relatively cheap. What does this buy you? Well, now the focus peaking feature really comes alive and you get a nice thin band of focus area to dial it in. Because the A series are designed for manual focus, they have a great feel to them. The result is a camera that feels very "engaging" and one that delivers results. Shoot in A or M mode and feel like you are totally in control of the creative process. Is focus peaking better than autofocus? In many respects, yes! Focus peaking shows a white outline around everything that will be in focus. This goes beyond what autofocus can do in that you can see your "focus plane". Many times it will tell you if you need to change the camera angle/position to get the scene elements you want in (and out of) focus. No autofocus system can give you this feedback. Also, as I mentioned above, using a good manual lens with focus peaking creates an level of engagement that is difficult to find in a modern camera -- it's fun!Other lenses? Well any lens in the Pentax-M series can also work. You will lose auto-exposure and will have to use "green button" exposure where you push a button so the camera can stop down and read the exposure (because it doesn't know the aperture range, it needs to stop down). If you are planning on shooting this camera in M mode anyway, this will not be a big deal.On the opposite side of the lens spectrum are the Pentax limited lenses. For this camera, I would recommend the DA limited primes because they are small, high quality and have "quick shift" focusing. This means that you can use manual focus which the camera is set to "autofocus" mode, making manual focusing much more convenient (I also disable focus on half-shutter-press and move it to the AE/AF button, same as with my K-5). In the DA range, I find the 35mm limited especially compelling for it's macro capabilities. Your best choice will depend on your shooting style but there are DA limited lenses available in 15, 21, 35, 40, and 70mm lengths. There is also the 100mm F-DA macro lens which is also mostly-metal with quick shift. I'd personally include it in the DA limited stable.Back to the ergonomics: it turns out that holding the camera like a rangefinder, with the left hand cupping the bottom of the lens and adjusting focus solves the ergonomic issue. Not only does the camera become comfortable to hold, but you are really holding it how you should handhold a DSLR as well.Allow me to talk about the results: You can shoot in RAW and are using one of the best ASPC sensors available. This means great results. Full-frame camera can edge out the K-01 in some situations but we are talking about a camera that is a fraction of the cost. IQ/Dollar, the K-01 has no peer and edges out most ASPC cameras in IQ, even those costing close to their full frame brothers in price. Check a site like DxoMark for the objective data to back these claims. What could be better if Pentax creates a K-02?1) Please, add an EVF. The LCD on the back works OK but an EVF will solve bright-sunlight issues and allow for a steadier hand-hold. Also EVFs are typically higher resolution for more critical focus and review.2) Make the LCD in the back tilt and swivel. This allow the camera to be held low, high, to the side, pointing back, etc without the awkwardness.3) Make the mount modular. I'm thinking an NEX style body with various adaptors for accepting different lenses. Make two variants of the K-mount adaptor, one with an AF motor and a cheaper one without. Allow third parties to provide adaptors for Canon and Nikon. Provide a gateway for users of other systems to justify a K-02 :)4) Enhance focus peaking further. Allow for different colors and sensitivities. Consider an "auto" sensitivity where the sensitivity increases if too much on the image is shown as "in focus" Consider an inversion or zebra mode.5) Add focus peaking, audio level monitoring, and raw output to the video mode.6) Find ways to keep the price low! The metal body is nice but go with plastic it if you can get the cost down. Stick with the 16mp sensor if its cheaper! Keeping the price low allows the K-02 to more easily fend off comparisons from $1000 cameras that can focus faster, etc.Alternatives? If you like the idea of using a camera as I described above, then the Sony NEX series is also worth a look. Sony has better focus peaking at this point with different color and sensitivity choices. The NEX-6/7 also have a great EVF. You can also buy adaptors to mount lenses from any manufacturer! The sony also has a few downsides. This first is cost, we are talking several times the price to get setup. Another issue is that the NEX can't work a legacy lens quite as smoothly as the K-01 can handle a Pentax A lens. The K-01 can shoot an A lens in any mode on the PASM dial, even auto and scene modes. The K-01 also composes and focuses these lenses wide open. Don't expect this kind of support from an NEX legacy solution, especially when using cheap adapters that don't interface with the lens aperture or electronics.

My background: I used several Pentax film bodies pre-digital, then moved on to compact digital cameras, then came back to (d)SLRs with first the Pentax K-m and then the Pentax K-x.Coming back first to the K-m with only a tiny (but typical for APS-C) plain optical pentamirror viewfinder felt a bit odd and limiting after the large bright split prisms of the film cameras and the real-time live-view of the compact digital cameras. I tried magnifiers and aftermarket split prisms which helped a bit but couldn't make up for the tiny size. I had opportunities to borrow K-7/K-5 bodies and the larger pentaprism was a big improvement, but I wasn't ready to spend >>$1000 (at the time) for them.Later, I moved to the K-x. At frst, I was very disappointed with the crude live-view implementation (slow operation, noisy, laggy display), but then I found myself using it more and more often to work-around limitations of the viewfinder (such as overhead shots at events or in tight places and for critical framing and focusing for tripod work). At that point, I realized that I could probably be happy if the live-view was ever comparable to a typical compact or P&S. In the K-01, with it's full-time live-view, the implementation is certainly good-enough, as good as any compact that I've used before. I upgraded to firmware 1.01 and the AF is sufficiently fast for my uses, it's noisy but that is inherently Pentax. Manual focus is at least as good as with the tiny optical viewfinders, with or without focus-peaking.The styling is bold, but I like it and the fit and finish is top-notch. The machined, knurled and bead-blasted aluminum fittings make it feel like a much more expensive tool. In fact, it feels like it came off the same production line as Pentax's Limited Lenses. My main gripes are:- The ergonomics are a bit odd, especially after being spoiled by the excellent ergonomics of the K-m/K-x. There is no reason that the grip could not be slightly deeper (at least as deep as the lens-mount) which would make a huge difference and the top buttons are really ill-placed. However, I suppose it's not much worse than flattish film-era bodies (see attached photos compared to a SuperProgram) and the ribbed rubber grip helps but it could have been so much better.- The lack of wireless flash is really stupid, again compared to the K-m/K-x which had it. This body with the full-time live-view is great on a tripod in a studio, but having to go out and buy flash cords or aftermarket wireless triggers after committing to Pentax wireless on earlier bodies is annoying.- The initial price was a bit high (although not a dealbreaker for me). However, I got it on Black-Friday pricing for [$], so it was a lot easier to make the decision to try it. For the construction and design, I think the original price was not bad, but the feature set is a bit lacking (wireless flash, non-articulating screen). With this feature set but with a plastic construction (i.e. similar to the K-m/K-x/K-r) and non-Mark-Newson styling they could have positioned it around $400 to start and had less naysayers.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Yellow):

I recently picked this camera up as my K-7's shutter wheel started to go on the fritz. At first I was a bit hesitant to purchase it due to negative reviews, but read a bit more into it and found that the updated firmware fixed the slow autofocus issues.

I have mainly used the camera with older manual lenses and the focus peaking feature is great. My only gripe about using it with my older lenses is that the camera will automatically open and close the aperture blades even when it is set to fully manual.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Black):

I purchased this camera basically as a back-up for my Pentax K-30; having the same sensor and being able to use the same lenses is great. I was aware of the slow auto-focus mentioned in reviews, but have found that focus peaking makes it really easy to focus manually in low light. I am blown away by the IQ, especially at high ISOs, so buying it was really a no-brainer.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Yellow):

This camera is replaces my Pentax K100D. This is a daily use camera. I had mixed feelings about changing from a DSLR to an interchangeable lens mirror-less camera. I love that all of my K Mount lenses work on this camera! To this point all of my camera's had a viewfinder. I have had no problems adjusting. The screen is bright and has as much information on it as you want. The camera is FAST. It is up and running for the first shot very quickly. The controls are all within easy reach and are very easy to understand. While I am taking more photographs with this camera, I am making less exposures with it due to the fact you see all the exposure compensation and or digital filters directly on the screen therefore needing less shots taken to get the picture just how you want it. This camera helps your creativity come alive and is truly hard to put down. The picture quality is outstanding! The battery life is amazing. The only drawback is the SD card and output door, it is a rubber flap matching the camera body. It feels rather flimsy, though I am sure it will last a long time. Oh, the manual focus is a breeze. When you focus it halos what is is in sharp focus. There is no guess work on manual focus! Beautiful quality photos can be made with the ISO as high as 12,500. If you are thinking about purchasing this camera and have the means to do so... don't wait, you will love it.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Black):

The K-01 is a little quirky, but it is a great camera. I don't know who this Mark Newson is and I don't necessarily agree with some of his design choices. In particular the placement of the green and red buttons is pretty bad. And everything that others have said about the flimsy rubber door covering the A/V USB ports is true (though I must say I don't worry about the rubber door breaking because it seems to be well built). And the lack of continuous autofocus makes the K-01 poorly suited to wildlife photography and sporting events.

But the K-01's dirty little secret is that it takes fantastic pictures. The sensor's performance in low light is excellent. If you want to blow your friends' minds, pick up a K-01 and an old "fast 50" prime lens, like an SMC M or A 50mm from the 1980s. You can usually find them at auction sites for twenty or thirty bucks. The K-01's focus peaking feature makes using these old manual lenses easy. Now compare the shots you get with this inexpensive setup with your buddy's big box store DSLR and kit lens. You won't even have to go pixel peeping to realize the K-01 will blow it out of the water every time. Portraits are gorgeous. Macro shots wonderfully detailed. Landscapes beautiful and everyday "other" shots are all spectacular. So if you can put up with some quirks, the K-01 is an amazing value.

This is a pretty nice mirroless, with a sturdy heavy build that takes the same lenses as the K-5 and K-30. The APS sensor is bigger than the micro 4/3, which produces nice and smooth looking photos/video with less noise. When I purchased it, I didn't even realize it has a 3.5mm microphone jack! You can really get decent audio with the right mic hookup. It's areal buy at the new reduced price.

The image quality is excellent, on a par with the Nikon D5100/7000 with which it shares a sensor (I have the Nikons too). It is a great little camera, and with the firmware update, the autofocus, which was the bane of the camera upon release, has been dramatically improved. The only real downside is the lack of an EVF.

I couldn't resist this camera at the close-out price. The same ultra high quality sensor as the K-5, all my Pentax lenses work with it, and I'm familiar with the camera's menu system. It doesn't have a view finder but it does have focus peaking. It is large (thick) for a mirrorless camera, but I can deal with that. And I will admit that the boxy look (at once both contemporary AND implying box camera nostalgia and sensibility) is not one that appeals to me. But for me functionality trumps aesthetics, especially at the close out price.

I mostly use this body with the Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series, a higher quality lens than the inexpensive 40mm that is normally bundled with the body.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Black):

bought the K-01 to supplement my Pentax K5 when I travel by air or go places where I need a small camera that takes my DSLR lenses. It fits the need perfectly and takes terrific shots, both indoors and outdoors. I use it with my Pentax 35mm, 40mm (ltd), 50mm, 70mm (ltd) lenses. The settings are easy to find and use. When Pentax reduced the price of the K-01, I knew it would be my supplement camera. It doesn't have a viewfinder, but I didn't expect to have one on a supplemental camera anyway. It does very well in low light either with or without a flash. I've taken some very good portrait images and landscape shots, with results worthy of any competitor's high-end multi-function P&S camera.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Black):

I debated purchasing this camera for months after it came out. The design and user reviews about the flimsy memory card cover concerned me, but after seeing the price drop to sub $[$], i decided to take chance. I purchased the body only with the intention of utilizing my collection of old k-mount glass. While there is a slight learning curve to utilizing old manual lenses, after a few days i had it down to a science and have been thrilled with the results. My old glass has a new lease on life! The sensor quality is impressive with impressive low noise even at higher ISO (3200+). I'm a renewed pentax fan.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Yellow):

This camera has been very polarizing for Pentax users. Before you own one you're not sure if you want to. Once you buy it though, you'll be surprised by how hard it is to put down. For whatever reason this camera is so much fun, you want to keep finding excuses to use it. People have complained about the ergonomics but in my opinion, with the way you end up holding the camera to frame shots, the grip is pretty great. A solid camera, very well-built. What's not so great? The SD card door. It's a clumsy rubber flap that seems rather illogical. Not a deal breaker, but nevertheless a weak point. The green button placement makes no sense either but I never use it so I can't complain too much about that. Bracketing only has three exposures instead of five which some might find to be limiting in certain situations.

Basically this camera is an odd duck with some limitations. I can say though that it is an eccentric and inspiring camera to use. I'd say if you are intrigued by the K-01 to go for it because the price is right and it most likely won't be around for too much longer.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Black):

Very cool looking camera and easy to use. As a 15 year SLR/DSLR user, I wasn't sure how I would like this camera but am finding it quite a lot of fun, almost like rediscovering photography a bit. The only downfall was the slow autofocus which was fixed by a quick and painless upgrade of the firmware. Images are incredible and the MF assist works great. I highly recommend this camera, at this price you can't go wrong!
AND.....B&H was incredible!! I live in Canada, not only was the camera cheaper at B&H (including cutoms and shipping), but I paid for regular shipping and it showed up at my door in 2 days. All my future camera purchases will be done through B&H.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Yellow):

The mirrorless system works very well to compose your images. It is like using the waist level finder on my TLR, or, of course, like composing on my digital point and shoots :) For me, this always results in a better image layout, compared to composing through viewfinder with glasses on, where I always end up with a lot of dead space around the subject.
The focus system is also very, very accurate. I have tested a lot with my Pentax 50mm 1.4 AF, and 28 mm 2.8 MF primes. The big difference is that the screen actually shows you WHICH point is being used to focus. This system may not be as fast as the phase detect mechanism of the flapping mirror SLRs, but, you can focus pin point on A point in the image. This allows you to use the lens fully open with much confidence. The contrast highlight feature allows you to focus a manual lens accurately with ease.
The image sensor is pretty good. I have been able to get very good ambient light portraits indoors.
The Pentax cameras also feature a hotshoe that allows me to use both a Pentax flash and a Vivitar 285 flash, on and off the camera, using the Pentax flash extension cord.
Upgrading from my Pentax K100-S, this has been a very good experience. The fact that I only had to buy the body, at this incredibly low price, and use every piece of Pentax glass I own makes this a five star winner. Thanks Pentax, and thanks to B&H for their excellent speed in handling my order.

Comments about K-01 Digital Camera (Yellow):

bought this to upgrade from my K100D. Great value because I can keep my four lenses and compose on the screen instead of peering through viewfinder. Ever since I used my Seagull TLR waist level finder, this is something I like for composing my images.
It allows me to effectively use even my f 2.8 28mm manual focus lens. The 50mm 1.7 works really great with this camera. The focus is really dead on, because it actually shows you what point it is focussing on. The hotshoe allows me to use my workhorse Vivitar 285 flash as well as the small pentax flash using a Pentax flash extension wire - great to take portraits. The 18-55 zoom lens from my older camera as well as the long zoom lens from Tamron work fine with the autofocus also. I always shoot RAW and use Aperture on my imac - the downloaded photos are really great!
