I purchased this camera for both work and pleasure, but to be honest, I am fully enjoying the camera in my after-hours now. I agree with the positive reviews, and can comment the questions regarding Photoshop compatibility and managing RAW files.RAW files are completely manageable using a 2TB external drive. Each RAW file is 45 to 49 MB in NEF format, but 35 to 45 MB in DNG format. That comes out to about 40,000 photos on the drive, which I paid $179.00 for, or less than 1/2 cent per picture. I spent a lot more than that on color slides in the Kodachrome days. I have no trouble opening the files in photoshop CS5 Bridge with the Camera RAW update, but I can't see them in CS6 beta Bridge for some reason. Lightroom 4 works fine on the D800's NEF files, so I use Lightroom 4 to convert to DNG and I can use both Photoshop CS5 and CS6. I recommend CS6. For the time being it is free, so what's not to like. Take advantage of the $50 discount on Lightroom 4 when you order the camera. It is well worth the small cost. The photos I get from this camera make spectacular large scale prints. Cropping allows me more creative control as I have lots of pixels to chose from. The new cropping features of Photoshop CS6 seem like they were designed for D800 users.Colors are great, and I am experimenting with high dynamic range (HDR) processing: you can set the camera to make in-camera HDR photos, or you can set it up to fire off three or more exposures in rapid succession, then use Photoshop or your HDR software to process the RAW files. The D800 has more dynamic range than any other digital cameras I've used, and HDR processing gives me more detail in shadows and highlights. Coupled with higher resolution, this is really great combination. Other things I like: Focus is fastPower on time is shortI can use all my old manual focus Nikkor lensesThe [$] price tag is quite reasonableAvailability is a problem as I have a second body on order for my business, but since I have one body in hand, I know it is worth the wait.

By now many people have reported on the internet problems with Nikon D800 and D800E autofocus. It is frequently reported that autofocus points on the left side do not work well. On four cameras (two D800s and two D800Es), I can confirm the problem!I have extensively tested four of these cameras (see testing notes below) and all four did not focus well when using the left most center focus point. Because those problems were so pronounced, I decided to return the cameras and did not test the other left side focus points. Internet reports discuss problems with those as well. It has been reported that the D800Es perform better than the D800s. That is somewhat consistent with my experience. The left autofocus points were worse on the D800s; however, I had one D800E with poor autofocus overall. That same D800E also had a broken electronic release connector when I received it. The other D800E performed better overall than the three other samples, but still not good enough. All four have been returned. What happens? Using standard autofocus, the camera will not focus well on the left most (center) autofocus point. In Live View mode you can get good focus (either manually focusing at maximum magnification or by using Live View autofocus). In side by side comparisons, Live View produces better results than standard autofocus. In many cases the differences were substantial with standard autofocus not producing results that were acceptable. Internet reports suggest many of the left side focus points have problems, not just the left center one. While that may be true, as I mentioned above, I did not test those on my four cameras because the left/center focus point off was enough to justify returning the cameras. For some people, not having the left autofocus working well won't matter. For me, I regularly shoot vertical landscapes and other vertical compositions where the left side selective focus points are very useful. I've been using the selective focus points on my D300 for years and find them quite valuable. Taking advantage of them has become very quick a simple for me and it is a feature that makes me more productive. So, I want them to work on the D800/E!There may be another serious impact of this problem even if you don't have that same needs as I do. Internet reports suggest that the 3D focusing function of the camera will also be degraded by left focus points not working correctly. For those interested this is how I tested the cameras, here's the process:- Put three focus targets on a wall corresponding to the center focus point, the left most center point, and the right most center point- Take shots where the selective focus points are on the center target, the left target, and the right target. Take four shots each with autofocus and four shots each with Live View (in other words, 8 shots per target, 24 shots per sequence. Another way of thinking of it is 4 comparison sets per target and 12 comparison sets per sequence)- Repeat sequence at different focus length and camera distance- Repeat all of the above with a different lens- Compare results in Adobe Lightroom side by side with the library view X/Y comparison tool - On my first two cameras I used manual focus for Live View and on the second two cameras I used Live View's autofocus (by the way, the latter is very good!) - I also experimented with using autofocus fine tune on individual lenses. On the second two cameras (i.e. the replacements), I did all of the above and then repeated after setting the appropriate AF Fine Tune per lens. AF Fine Tune, in some cases, seemed to reduce the problem. However, I did not reduce it enough to make either camera's performance acceptable- So, this is literally hundreds of side by side comparisons across four cameras. Given the amount of reports on this problem on the internet, I suggest anyone wanting one of these cameras consider waiting until internet reports show purchasers regularly getting good cameras. Alternatively, if Nikon acknowledges the problem and guarantees new cameras don't have it or guarantees that they can fix it if one camera does have it, then I will try again and purchase another. In the mean time, I'm waiting. On the point of Nikon repairing the cameras, most of the online posts I have read indicate that Nikon service centers are not able to fix the problem at this time. For me personally, I was really looking forward to the upgrade from a D300. I really do want the D800/E to work! Instead, I've been really disappointed! Finally, a note on customer service…I purchased the D800s from [@] and the D800Es through B&H. Both companies facilitated the camera returns and replacements. They were both supportive and helpful and did everything a purchaser could want when dealing with such a bad situation. Nikon seems to have been silent on this left autofocus issue, and that has NOT been to their credit. The good customer service provided by [@] and B&H, in dealing with Nikon's problem, does both companies credit!

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I have used this camera for a while now. It never disapoints. It the image is not right, it's my fault, not the camera's. As has been said many times, it does need good technique and lenses. On retrospect, I might have purchased the 'e' version, but was worried about moire at the time. But, I regularly use this camera to create images for gallery and for stock. Love it!

    Incredible piece of gear

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought my D800 back in February, and so far it hasn't let me down. The photos are immense, with incredible clarity and detail rendering (good lenses help with that, of course), and it pairs up nicely with the 85mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 G models (I own the latter, and sometimes rent the former). I did find that skin tones are rendered more pleasing in Capture One rather than ACR, but I've heard people say that about all camera systems, really. Love it, and saving my pennies for the D810!

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I have been using pro series Nikon bodies since the D1 came out, so I have experience with their cameras and features. However, I have had to relearn a few things with this body. Be advised there may be a learning curve.

I love this camera so far. The resolution is great, but that comes with some file size problems and can slow down your post production. You will need lots of storage space and larger CF/SD cards.

The feel of the body is sturdy and not fragile.

The high ISO noise is considerably better than many older bodies.

I am enjoying being able to switch between FX (full frame) and DX (1.5 focal factor) as needed. I get the wider view with my FX lenses when I want it and the extra zoom on when I need that too.

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

The control lay out is a pro's dream, but, it's going to be confusing to someone who's not familiar with manual controls as there are a lot of buttons and dial. There is no "auto" mode like on entry level DSLRs. There is P mode, autofocus, auto white balance, and auto-ISO but you need to know what those are and what those do. This is NOT a good first DSLR for the uninitiated. The button lay out is wonderful for those who've been shooting and know exactly what they want to change, everything is at your finger-tips. So many little short-cuts and so much is customizable.

We use this as a back-up to our medium format systems for art reproduction as well as for architectural photography.

For the price the resolution is stellar. It gives plenty of room to crop or to print large.

While it's high end autofocus is very impressive and capable of keeping up with subjects moving faster than those we typically encounter in the studio, it's slower shutter speed and large file sizes would probably be a turn off for more sports and wildlife oriented shooters (the older D700 or the recently announced D810 might be better).

It's high ISO performance and it's ability to pull tons of detail out of the shadows of lower ISO RAW files is remarkable. Though it isn't as forgiving as Canons tend to be if you're trying to recover the highlights. (basically if you're used to shooting Canon like I was, err on the side of under exposed… you can recover shadows a lot more than you can on the Canons I used to use but you can't recover as much from the highlights).

The file sizes are very large and probably over-kill for most applications (including weddings and such.

I've done some basic work with the Video and it looks wonderful, but again you have to be comfortable with manual controls. I don't find AF during video really useful.

The Nikon D800 is a beautiful camera that amazes me every time I use this camera! I do a lot of landscape, low light, time-lapse, and product photography with the D800 and excels at everything I use it for. The one thing about this camera that RAW shooters should be reminded of is the 36.3 megapixel sensor, and just how much space it takes up on your camera storage/computer storage media. But that sensor also allows you to make large crops with plenty of pixels left for large prints.

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I haven't had the camera too terribly long, but from what little I've used it, it's performed great, exactly as expected. The LCD screen is a little tough to see in sunny conditions compared to my D7000, but aside from that, I really can't complain about much. The definition and clarity is amazing. Don't let people tell you that you won't see the benefit of 36 megapixels unless you make large prints. I've shot the same photo with the same lens on my D7000 and on my new D800, there is quite a bit of difference in image quality even in the images I use for online use. Sure, will you reap the full benefit of such a high resolution camera printing 8x10? Of course not, but even that small, I can see detail in the images much more clearly than on my 16 megapixel D7000. If you're pondering buying this camera, ponder no more, it's worth the investment.

Great body - a companion to another I already have. It concerns me that the strap mounting pin broke on the previous body after 1.5 years of moderate use but not what I expect is a common problem. The new D810 is also worth a look; I wish the D800 had a faster drive, and the 810 addresses that.

Comments about Nikon D800 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

First off let me say that there is a significant difference in the image quality that I have seen. I bought this to accompany my D600 (which I love). The level of sharpness if in a caliber of its own. The dynamic range is also so much better. Low light performance really does live up to its name and is much much better than anything that I have shot with in the past!. Along side my d600 what i shoot mostly is weddings and events similar to this type of situation. This camera performs flawlessly under many circumstances except for a few. I have encountered a few problems, the first that bothers me the most is low buffer capability and very low burst rate. It fills up very very fast because of the very large file sizes. Now this isnt a huge problem for me because I rarely spray and pray/motordrive, infact I dont do it except for the wedding kiss, the couples exit, or for the super rare sports occasions that I seldom shoot. The file size isnt that much of a problem for me either because hard drives are cheap and I shoot with intention and not with luck. With this D800 I have also have had some problems with the on and off switch. Sometimes I turn off the camera but it stays on, which makes me switch from on and off, on and off, until it turns off. When I first recieved it as well I had focus lock going on and would not be able to refocus until I turn it off and on again (but sometimes it would turn off -_-). But that issue seems to have taken care of itself bc I no longer expererince that. But over all I absolutly love this beast of a machine. It has been a game changer forsure and I am glad that I have made with awesome investment! Could not be happier (I actually could if the issues above didnt happen). For the issues i wanted to give it a four stars but I couldnt because over the machine is spectacular and would not change it for anything!

I purchased my last D-SLR in 2004.......10 years later I purchased the Nikon D800. What a massive leap forward! Once you get the feel of this camera, and what it is capable of, your creative juices will run non-stop. I will be attending a car show this weekend and I can't wait to take my new D800!

With a pro-lens, this camera shines as to it's resolution. I actually didn't find the RAW size files too much of a put off because all those pixels sure give latitude when working the images in Lightroom.

I purchased this camera and after a few hours use, I noticed that when it was writing files to the memory card it would freeze up. I would have to stop and remove the battery for it to start working properly again. Thought it was a memory card issue so I switched memory cards and experienced the same problem again and again. I used SanDisk Extreme Pro cards. A call to B&H resulted in me having to return the camera. However, the image quality when I was able to use the camera was great.

This is a great camera as long as you don't have to deal with Nikon. Their customer service really sucks. I sent them an email with a question regarding their wireless capabilities.

I could not believe the following: If I had purchased a D7100, I could buy a wireless xmitter for under $60. Since I purchased the D800, I was forced to buy an xmitter that costs well over $700.

When I sent an email to Nikon customer service to ask why this was so, their response was to send me a link to the D800 user manual. That's it, nothing else.

This, plus the fact that they will DISCONTINUE support for their proprietary software makes me wish I had bought the comparable Canon.

I am a long time photo enthusiast and decided to upgrade from my Nikon D80 to the D800. This camera is teaching me just how sloppy I've been when using a camera. The huge amount of detail that it is capable of capturing is really keeping me honest. Every dust speck, every tiny motion is caught and becomes so obvious when you zoom up on the 36.3 megapixel image. On the downside, I now want to buy some very expensive lenses… I love my D800, but it humbles me. This camera is going to force me to become a much more skilled photographer! I hope I'm up to the challenge…
