Haven't had a lot of time yet to use this lens yet. However, initial shots I've taken so far with this lens does NOT disappoint at all! I have the Zeiss 35 F/1.4 Distagon prime which is no slouch when it comes to 35mm. I also have the 16-35mm Canon ii. I've never been too happy with the 16-35 ii in terms of IQ (although it will "hit" sometimes.) ... I've always found myself falling back on the Zeiss 35mm, but there is a problem with that lens--manual focus only. So forget about action shots. The Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 beats Canon's prime 35mm hands down, so this is why I never got the Canon 35mm prime. I've been waiting in reality a couple of years for a solution at the mid-range zoom, because I also was not at fan of the original 24-70mm lens.

I have great news. This lens at least to my eye is as sharp as the Zeiss 35mm prime F1/1.4, and that's saying a lot! Others are reporting at 24mm, it's the sharpest of them all including canon's prime. Pretty much from 24-50 you are looking at stellar results, which is perfect. At 70mm, folks are reporting some loss of sharpness in the corners. To that I say, there are always compromises, and I would much have it sharp corner to corner at the wider focal. (Think about it, you are probably doing portrait at 70mm, so a little less sharp in corners is not a deal breaker!)

I'll write more when I have some more time to really put this lens through its paces. But I did attach one shot I got already with the lens (Canon 5d Mark iii) for which I am very happy with (and impossible with the Zeiss manual focus)

2 Thumbs up! ... wish it had IS like everyone else is whining about... BUT this lens I don't think should be underestimated.... it's a killer!

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

EF 20-70MM f/2.8 ii is Amazing

By Seated Collector

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was watching this lens for a long time and the only thing holding me back was the price and lack of i,age stabilization. Given the rebate offered by Canon and my taking a chance, I just purchased this lens and have been very excited about photography ever since! I have watched a lot of user reviews and I do believe this lens will not be the best if you are shooting video, given the lack of IS (unless you are shooting with a tripod), but surprising, I am getting sweet handheld shots, even though I am sure I don't have the steadiest hands in the world! The color rendition on this lens is stunning and I encourGe those looking for this focal length to strongly consider this lens. I truly am excited bout photography again and look forward to growing with this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Having just upgraded from my Canon 18-200mm crop kit lens, it was painful to invest in both this lens and a 70-200 f2.8 to get roughly the same range. I thought my 70-200 would get a lot more action than this one, but a couple of recent weddings have proved me wrong, as the majority of my photos came using this lens.I love the focus accuracy, its sharpness, and the 2.8 for low-light conditions. I see now why this is the bread and butter of many wedding and event photographers. A great buy!

Costly, but worthwhile!

By Joe G.

from Bay Area, CA

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have only had this lens for a little over 2 weeks and I have already made it an integral part of my shooting repertoire.I used it on Thanksgiving to get some great family shots, & I was able to capture more than ever before with my 5D Mk III body. I have also already used it for some landscapes on a hillside for a commercial shoot, and its wide angles when combined with a full frame body really open up the possibilities. Also when combined with a good body, its tonal range and low light performance are incredible. Motor is nice and quiet. There's no Image Stabilization and while that knitting worried me, I haven't noticed at all. Overall, I'm very impressed.

Sold my original 24-70 to upgrade to the II model. Love the new design. Lighter weight. The focus and zoom rings are larger. The lens hood is smaller. I do not think that the image quality is that much better to justify trading in your old lens. I shoot sports and I do believe this lens focuses a little faster.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Great lens but very expensive. For me the trade off is worthwhile, you get shots you just can't with other lenses. I particularly need it for shallow DOF and low light use. Very sharp images. This replaces a 28-70 f/2.8 L that I have had for 14 years and which has been very reliable, I am anticipating the same quality experience with this one and can justify the cost on that basis.

Although this lens is expensive, it is a must have. It is very versatile and has become my new walk-around lens. Of course, the L glass makes a big difference in quality and price. I recommend having a tripod (or unipod) handy because this lens does not have image stabilization. I'm glad I purchased it.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I needed a good lens so bad after being tired of using my Sigma. After some research I decided to either purchase this or a cannon telephoto lens. after having my hands on test at B&H. I settled for this one. The sad part is when I bought this lens it was around $. came with a cannon $ mail in Rebate. I did get the $ dollar card. I spent the money on a Rode Video MIC and some grocery. The results have been great.I use this on a cannon 7D. This works great in Low light and the image quality is mind-blowing. I was planning to upgrade my camera but this Lens proved that I can stick to what I have for now. I also do a lot of video so this lens does add depth to your video quality. A must have for all professionals and the reviews I read proved to be 100 % correct.

I purchased this lens for indoor action shots for my yearbook staff. We love our 70-200mm lens, but it doesn't capture some of the wider shots we want in our gymnasium. This lens is awesome for pep rallies and basketball games - great clarity. So glad we added this lens to our staff equipment.

I don't even think about distortions with this lens at any focal length and any aperture. It just works. How awesome would this thing be with IS, though!?I do wish the filter threads were metal, also.

I owned the earlier version of this lens and was never overly excited about it's sharpness. I've owned this lens for about a year and it's become a go to lens for me in many situations. When I' covering a corporate event I will often have this lens on one camera and a 70-200 F2.8 on the other. With those two lenses I can cover just about anything. I've also used the lens for a number of aerial photography projects. I do wish the lens had image stabilization. For travel photography I will pull out the 24-105 since it's a tad lighter in weight and on the pocket book if something happens to it. I've also used it with a polarizer and variable ND filter and have loved the results. here is link to some industrial landscape photography I used this lens for. ----------combining-landscape-photography-and-architecture-photography-•-green-bay-photographer/

I received this as a gift from my husband... I've been wishing for it for forever. I had great results right out of the box. I was concerned about it being too heavy, but while it is sturdy, it is not too heavy for me to handle. If I could only have one lens, this would be it.
