Haven't had a lot of time yet to use this lens yet. However, initial shots I've taken so far with this lens does NOT disappoint at all! I have the Zeiss 35 F/1.4 Distagon prime which is no slouch when it comes to 35mm. I also have the 16-35mm Canon ii. I've never been too happy with the 16-35 ii in terms of IQ (although it will "hit" sometimes.) ... I've always found myself falling back on the Zeiss 35mm, but there is a problem with that lens--manual focus only. So forget about action shots. The Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 beats Canon's prime 35mm hands down, so this is why I never got the Canon 35mm prime. I've been waiting in reality a couple of years for a solution at the mid-range zoom, because I also was not at fan of the original 24-70mm lens.

I have great news. This lens at least to my eye is as sharp as the Zeiss 35mm prime F1/1.4, and that's saying a lot! Others are reporting at 24mm, it's the sharpest of them all including canon's prime. Pretty much from 24-50 you are looking at stellar results, which is perfect. At 70mm, folks are reporting some loss of sharpness in the corners. To that I say, there are always compromises, and I would much have it sharp corner to corner at the wider focal. (Think about it, you are probably doing portrait at 70mm, so a little less sharp in corners is not a deal breaker!)

I'll write more when I have some more time to really put this lens through its paces. But I did attach one shot I got already with the lens (Canon 5d Mark iii) for which I am very happy with (and impossible with the Zeiss manual focus)

2 Thumbs up! ... wish it had IS like everyone else is whining about... BUT this lens I don't think should be underestimated.... it's a killer!

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I use this lens for wedding photography as well as lifestyle newborn photography. This lens is extremely versatile as it goes plenty wide, but does not distort the image. I do not have a macro lens at this point, but this lens gets close enough to my subjects that I can get nice detail shots that are crisp and clean. If you do wedding/portrait photography and are looking to invest in one lens that will give you the most bang for your buck, this is it. This lens is so diverse I find I have it on my camera body for most of my sessions. I usually have to start my sessions with my 50 because once I switch to this lens, it doesn't come off. Extremely pleased with the speed of the auto focus. It is also a very quiet lens. The only negative thing that could be said is that it is slightly heavy, but that is to be expected when you aren't using a prime lens.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I read many reviews and I now understand why so many people love this lens. I've taken over 400 pictures in the two weeks that I've had this lens. The colors are vibrant and the pictures are consistently clear. I also like the lock feature, which keeps it from moving while in the camera bag or while on the camera when you're not taking pictures. Overall, this lens is simply amazing.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Compared to the 24-70 2.8L, this lens has better contrast and colors do appear richer. That was immediately obvious in comparing identical photos shot by the same camera with the same exposures within a minute of each other. But from a sharpness standpoint, I don't know that that the new version is obviously sharper. Could even be less sharp. Just not sure. So, overall, not convinced this was a worthy upgrade. It also isn't as sharp as some of my primes. It's still an amazing lens, for sure, but worth the upgrade? I say keep your money. Oh - and the AF at macro levels simply doesn't work. You'll see if you buy it - it hunts and pecks and then blurs the focus. This on a 5D MKIII.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I recently became a widow in my 60's. Devastated, I made a list of three things I wanted to do to get me past these feelings of deep sadness. First on my list: photography. I purchased a Mark D 11 EOS and an EF 24-70 mm f/2.8L 11 USM lens from B&H. While I have signed up for membership in a photography club and online tutorials, this camera and lens allowed me ( a relative newbie) to capture incredible photos of family and friends just by getting out there and "shooting"!
I took this lens to a recent wedding in Michigan and everyone loves my photos (especially me)! I will continue to shoot like a pro while learning HOW to shoot like a pro!

I mainly shoot landscapes with a 17-40 and 70-200. This lens was the perfect addition to my camera bag, partially for landscapes, but more so for family and group photos. It replaces a 24-70 Tamron that did not match up well with a full frame sensor. The only downsides are the price and the lack of image stabilization, which the Tamron had, but if you mostly use a tripod, the IS is more of a hinderance than a help.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

After years of torture with (4 copies) the first version of this lens, finally a winner! The copy of this lens that I received is super-sharp at all apertures. It is as sharp as my 70-200 2.8IS v2. I am, however, baffled as to why it is not an IS lens - especially considering the price.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I love the Canon 24-70mm, f/2.8! This lens is so multi purpose and as a wedding photographer, is an absolute must have for me. I shoot most of my weddings using a Canon 50mm, f/1.2 but having the 24-70 on hand is great for capturing shots that I can't get with my 50mm. I would recommend this lens to anyone!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Really struggled initially pulling the trigger on this expensive beauty but soooo glad I did. I was initially leaning towards buying a used version 1 but after reading tons of reviews I decided to go with this one. The sharpness and color contrast is simply amazing! No IS is no biggie for me, not a deal breaker. Has some weight to it but not overly heavy. Don't mind the lighter weight body (plastic) as it saves on weight but do wish the filter threads were metal versus plastic.
