This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have all L series lenses with a Canon 5D lll; My 50mm, 24-105mm F4, and now added 24-70mm F2.8 all have different purposes. The 25-105mm has sweet spots, but the 24-70mm sweet spots are at all focal lengths, for bokeh, the 50mm is great, but the 24-70mm has the zoom flexibility. Otherwisw for the 2.8, the 5D lll covers low light needs at F4 with the 24-105 (over 70mm, I use my F2.8 70-200, which is an incredible lens). The extremely fast autofocus is a + also.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I use this lens entirely for video. It's well-built and durable. A bit heavy, but no more than expected. It doesn't have motion stabilization, but that doesn't really matter much to me at a max of 70mm. It has a handy zoom lock to keep the zoom from sliding around during transport. Comes with a nice lens hood and Canon bag. It's pricey, but well worth it, this has become my go-to lens. If you're using a video rig and a lens adapter like me, I would definitely advise getting a lens support also to help out with the weight. The price may scare some off, but you'll get what you pay for - a great, fast, professional Canon lens that will last you many years.

I stepped up from the old 28-70mm f/2.8 to this new 24-70mm. I can't believe how awesome this lens is compared to the "original". There really is no comparison. It is a top grade lens. There simply is nothing bad to say about it other than the price. It is expensive but I believe 100% worth it. Go buy one and see for yourself.

        By GAMA

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

A little bit over priced. But I think is a must have for any wedding photographer, I use 70-200mm most of the time. But when it's time to the formal group photos nothing beats it, specially for large groups, is sharp from the bride and groom to the last person in the edge of the frame, also when the ceremony takes place in a small venue, 24 to 70 is what you need.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This is an amazing zoom lens that beats most if not all of Canon's prime lens. If it wasn't for using faster primes for my wedding work, I would use this lens all the time. This lens is tack sharp. I've been looking at this lens for years and I'm so glad that I finally purchased it! It's a million times better than the mark 1 version of this lens, which I just sold to buy this one. It basically has no lens chromatic aberration at all. I have a 24F/1.4 and it has really bad lens chromatic aberration, so now I use the 24-70 instead of that lens in most all situations. If you're on the fence of buying this lens, you should just buy and you won't be sorry at all.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This is probably a great lens but not the best one for me. This is not a hey-lets-set-the-camera-to-auto-and-get-some-great-shots type of lens. It is a manual mode lens so you control all aspects of the shot.
The issue is that since this lens has 2.8 aperture, Auto will tend to drop down to this aperture if the lighting is low (unless your camera lets you set a limit on this which mine doesn't). So when the lighting gets low, all your shots are at 2.8 which has a very short depth of field and you will get a lot of blur. I have a picture on a picnic table with everyone sitting on it long ways. Only the first two people are in focus. And the puny LCD on my camera was too small for me to pick up that 80% of the people were blurry.
So you say, Well set the darn thing to Aperture Priority. Okay, so now you run into another problem, this lens does not have image stabilization (IS) that allows you to shoot at 1/30 with no problem. So you set your aperture, and again you hit some low light, and BAM, you're under 1/40sec shutter speed, and BAM BAM, blurry shoots!! So if you are used to your IS lens, you really need to be careful shooting in aperture priority.

Bottom line: only use this lens in manual mode. Which is fine, but can be a hard lesson to learn.
