This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

A light weight, fast, clear lens, this one makes for easy subject framing. The speed allows you to leave the flash in the bag. Good wide angle for group shots, I keep it on my Canon 7D Mark II most of the time!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

If you can't afford to miss shots, this is your lens. It's that simple. I do a lot of shooting that is spontaneous movement and often in lower light. This lens shows up for duty and is as consistent as you can get for nailing focus and color.
Sure, the price is up there a bit but if my return on investment is more useable shots and less time spent fixing in post, then it's more than worth the price tag. It's a little lighter than it's older brothers of metal, but the build quality in the hand does not feel cheap or weak. Overall I'm happy I saved up and bough this, and have also decided to upgrade my 70-200 to the version II based on my experience with my new 24-70 II. The only bummer is many people will need to buy new 82mm filters now.

I purchased this lens with intentions of capturing video. Additionally, to take the place of my prime lenses. What a significant difference. Despite not having the IS feature, this lens is a hell of a beast. Colors are beautiful, contrast is great, and the images are very crisp. Distortion at the widest angle is nearly unrecognized. A++ to Canon, even though this thing should come with IS, and a free bottle of champagne.

          Perfect

          By Neff

          from North Shore, MA

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was looking for a high quality general lens, this is perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. The pictures are beautiful and sharp. My favorite features are the fixed 2.8 aperture and lens zoom lock. The lack of IS hasn't affected my pictures at all, and I've mostly been shooting handheld. I've just recently become more serious about photography and started taking classes in the fall, so I'm still a beginner. I've been using my kit lens and this really upped my photography game. I highly recommend this lens, it's pricey but I'm happy with my investment.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This lens is what you expect it to be - very sharp, and very easy to manually focus due to the f2.8 aperture.

I would say that the f2.8 version, is still fairly light and small, for what it is. Only slightly bigger than the f4 version, which I also own. Much smaller and lighter than its predecessor.

It is as sharp as my 90ts - which I think one of Canon top lenses for sharpness. BUT I do not think it is as sharp as the 70-200 f28 IS mk II, which I own and know well.

It is MUCH sharper than the f4 version. The f4 version is "sharp enough" but never quite crisp when magnified, my comparisons are at around f8 fyi.

The f4 version looks like a lesser res image ressed up in photoshop, the f2.8 looks like a high res version of the same image.

There is also a nice color and clarity to this lens, much like the 70-200mkII.

It is very easy to focus it manually, things either pop in or out of focus clearly. With the f4 version, it all looked sort of in, and sort of out of focus, but never really a clean focus point when shooting.

Plus there may or may not be a "backfocusing" issue with the f4 version when stopped down - Canon says they fixed it years ago, or some such explanation ....

Sounds funny I know, but that is what it is, and because of those issues above, I felt I could not trust the f4 lens, and got the 2.8 after having the f4 for six months. Maybe a pricey lesson to learn.

The downside, NO IMAGE STABILIZATION, like really Canon Sheeze. The rumor sites report a mark III version in the works - with IS - but it seems to be at the bottom of any priority list.

The bottom Line ... buy this lens not the f4 vers if you're a real working pro with your butt on the line.

I shoot with a 5ds .... have a lot of canon lenses, have owned canon for 30+ years, as my small format system.

I am a food and beverage, venue and chef portrait photographer. So there is a range of photo needs and uses in my genre.

fyi.... I am a professional photog with 30 years experience, 95% Still Life and Tabletop. Former view cam guy 45, 810 (sadness) , have owned med format cameras as well.

I have two lenses just like this and like it to events and situations that can not only use fixed lenses. In my opinion is the second best zoom lens Canon, behind only 70-200 2.8 II. The focus and bokeh are good and the lens is very clear. I do not like so much the weight and 82mm ring size that requires you to specific filters for it.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This is a great walk-around lens. The 24-70 focal range is versatile for a variety of photographic subjects ranging from landscapes to portraiture.

At f/2.8, the lens remains very sharp. This makes the lens useful indoors and provides great bokeh.

It's also built well. With a lens this expensive, one might expect this. It may be a little heavy, but not overly so.

It does have a little lens flare, but only when pointed directly nto the sun.

The only downside to this lens is the price tag.

As an oddity, it does have a lens lock, even though the zoom doesn't creep. It only really seems to be useful if you've got a tight camera bag.

Since I mainly shoot sports I wanted to try it for basketball for under the net and it's fast and super sharp. I will also use it for my "walk around lens" just for general every day shooting.

Love this lens. The range is just what I needed for portrait photography. I use this on a my Canon 5D Mark III which I also purchased from B&H.
