This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Great lens. Much better than its predecessor

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Great lens that's vastly superior in just about every way to the Mark I version, which I owned for many years. I'm tempted to rate it 4 stars due the lack of image stabilization, but I can't because the image is still better than the competition. I wish they'd make a version with IS and also a version where the barrel doesn't telescope when you zoom, much like the 70-200mm f.2.8 Mark II.

24-70mm 2.8 II canon lens

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I purchased this lens to update from the older 24-70 2.8 version which has been through a lot. I shoot almost daily using this lens, either portraits sessions or events and was hesitant to buy the newer version, not sure I was really improving my situation. I miss my longer lens hood, had an issue on a trip with sun hitting the lens, if the lens hood was longer like the older version, I don't think it would have been an issue but in most situations the "shorter" lens hood will probably be fine. please note that the filter thread on the newer version is 82mm vs 77mm from the older version. A nice added feature is a locking mechanism to "lock" the lens in place so it doesn't slide out if held upside down like the older version which is nice when packing or carrying. Overall the lens seems to do the job I expected. It is quick to focus and is actually feels lighter than the older version. As I read somewhere else it does feel better and fits my 5DmarkIII body better than the older version. As often as I have this lens/body combination in my hand with and without a flash bracket and flash, being lighter is a bonus. The quality of images is still of the high quality. If you have never used the canon 24-70mm 2.8 of course you are going to appreciate the clarity of images and speed of focus. If you are trying to decide to update your older version with this one, I believe you will still get the great quality of files and images you expect, with a slightly lighter lens, if you are using outdoors you will want to find a more substantial hood to block the sun hitting the lens and do remember the filter thread is 82mm if you are using any filters that screw on, you will need to update those also. I put my new lens through the paces on a weekend trip and for the most part it proved itself.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I'm an experienced amateur. I've shot many weddings, families, landscapes, and sports over the past 40 years. After reading so many wonderful reviews of this lens I had to buy it. My first impression was, "Wow! My very old Canon 28-105 USM II is actually a very good lens!". In other words, I was expecting more from this L lens at first. After using it for a few months now on my 6D, I'm starting to see how good this lens is. It's excellence was not apparent right out of the box but with a little experience now I've come to appreciate it's sharpness and contrast and overall lovely handling.

Focusing is quiet and very fast and as I mentioned handling is a dream. However, I've never been so challenged with a new lens. Good exposure seems much harder to lock in than what I'm used to. I've experimented with over and under exposing in difficult lighting and as I said, it's a challenge. I'm hoping that over time I'll be able to set up my shots more quickly in Aperture Priority mode with this lens and make the perfect shots I'm expecting. I will now reshoot the same subject in A+ mode to see how the camera exposes the subject and compare results. Sometimes I'm happier with the A+, sometimes with mine. But the shots I am happy with are superb so at this point I'm blaming myself for any dissatisfaction I feel at this point about my photography with this lens.

I have been shooting with 17-40mm and 70-200mm for years, filling the gap with a 50mm, however after I got the 24-70 it has been on my 5Diii since day 1. My camera let me use polarizer most of the time, and I fix the vignetting with lens correction in lightroom. Super easy. Not sure if I need any other lenses than this and my 70-200 f/2.8ii for general photography work.

Every lens is a compromise between speed, size, optical quality, and weight. The EF 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't feel like a compromise because Canon struck the perfect balance when designing this lens.

I took it out on it's first real test shoot and WOW!!! I shot a twilight portrait in half the time it would normally take just because of the f2.8!!! The lens had ZERO problems focusing and my images are the sharpest they have ever been. I enjoy the added weight to the camera as I have very large hands and it balances nicely with my battery grip.

I always order from B&H and received the typical response from them: amazing customer service and reassurance of my investment. Previously bought a lens that wasn't exactly what I was looking for and they made the return transaction simple and effortless and helped me find exactly what I needed. B&H buyer for life.

I've owned the mark 1 version for years and loved the lens. It was my go to lens for most everything and was concerned that Canon couldn't improve on the lens. Well they did. The Mark 2 version is not as heavy and focuses very fast. I've only had it for 2 weeks now and will see if it holds up as well as the old version.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I had the same lens, but the first model and was really unhappy with it. It wasn't sharp enough and the images that it produced weren't beautiful enough. When I was looking at backgrounds produced by 24-70 Mark I I saw "nervous" lines and edges. At some point I stopped using that lens completely.

I was abstaining from buying this newer lens because of its price. I thought that it couldn't be much different from the older model aside from some minor improvements. But I was completely wrong. It's a different lens altogether. Really sharp, really fast on focusing, producing beautiful images with soft backgrounds and all.

Would not hesitate buying it if knew how good this lens is.
