A very light, moderately wide, very sharp lens with fast autofocus. I got a little spoiled with L lenses, but there are times when something smaller and lighter is preferable (pointing an L lens at someone can be sort of like pointing a bazooka at them, especially the F/2.8 zooms - not for the faint of heart), and that is where the new 28mm IS lens fits in. It may not be as sturdy as the 35mm L, but it focuses just as fast, and has IS to compensate for 1/4 as much light it lets in at the widest aperture.

I first tried to go light with the 40mm pancake, but the AF on that lens was way too slow.

IS on the 28mm helps a lot in low light, while keeping reasonable depth of field (the L lens often has to be stopped down to make sure more of the subject is in focus, negating its bright aperture advantage).

Downsides: vignette seems to be quite heavy wide open; or at least peripheral illumination correction makes images A LOT brighter. Distortion is pretty minimal, so vignetting is the only significant downside of the Canon 28mm IS F/2.8 lens.

I shoot mostly video on a 5d mark iii and 60d. This lens worked out great. Because it's so light and it has the image stabilizer I was able to do some great hand held work. (With the help of a monopod) Would be great if it was a little faster but 2.8 is still pretty good. Nice Bokeh. Also the lens seemed very sharp so it was easy to catch focus on the fly. I noticed some bedning or distortion on the edges but i was able to live with it. Also it's not the best build but I guess it's a trade off for the lightweirght. This was my best over the holidays purchase from b&h for sure.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

Great for all around photography. I have a Canon that has a 1.6 crop factor, and this lens therefore acts like a 35mm f2.8. The IS is great to have, especially for video, and I would highly recommend for photo-journalistic style shooting.

Great for low light!

By PhotoJenic

from California

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I do a lot of professional theater photography and the low f stop on this lens is great! I can shoot at ISO 800 down at f2.8 but depth of filed is shallow. I need to experiment more with the ISO settings but love the feel! It is heavier than my 18-55 but I can tell it from the thicker, higher quality glass. I plan on doing night sky photography with this lens due to the low light capability and the infinity focus setting, a feature I have never had on a lens before! I am so looking forward to portraits too and will be excited to see what I can do with it!

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I purchased this to go with my 50mm 1.4 & my 85mm 1.8. I could not decide if I wanted a 28mm fixed or a 24-70mm. I went with the 28mm. Used this for engagement photos in the mountains here in Colorado and they turned out amazing. It's very fast & light weight - great for portraits and landscapes! Cannot wait to use this for long exposures

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I prefer zoom lenses for the versatility, but when I am inside I generally do not get enough light to make my camera happy so I go to a prime. The 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is working great for that scenario. In fact this weekend I ran into that exact situation and the lens performed excellent.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

This is a compact and very high quality lens which has Image Stabilization - unusual in a wide angle. Although Canon probably intended this for movies for full frame DSLR, it is also an excellent fit to my tiny SL1 for walking around. Small physically but with better angle of view than the pancake 40 mm lens, this is the equivalent of 45 mm, just about perfect for general use. I recommend this over the 24mm IS 2.8 lens, which is similar but larger, lower optical quality, and too wide for general use.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

It's a little embarrassing to have chosen an f2.8 28mm lens over an f1.8mm lens, but it focuses very quickly, thanks to the USM, which makes it perfect for pictures of people. You have to get right up close to get the shot, and then the 28mm lens gives you expansiveness. This isn't the right choice for architecture because, while it's more crisp and less distorted than an f4 zoom lens open to 28mm, the f1.8 lens would be a better option and a little cheaper. There seem to be a better selection of good 35mm lenses, but 24-28mm is where I like to shoot with a zoom, and this has felt less constricting than the 35mm.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my old Canon 28mm F2.8 with the regular focus motor. The reasons I went for this one were:
                1. USM focus motor
                2. IS, since I want to use the lens for video purposes as well.

I am very happy with the results from this lens!

The lens are amazing. Canon is known for their lens' and they didnt fail me. The focus is beautiful, the images it produces are beautiful, everything about it is beautiful. It is just an amazing piece of craft. Well done, Canon. I mainly used these lens for portraits and events; it's good for that, specifically. On a last note, B&H provide fantastic service. I order these lens on a Sunday night, received an email alerting me that the order had been processed and is already shipped the following day. I received it in the mail three days later. Just great service.

                Thank you very much! :)

I did think about the 28mm 1.8 initially it was the correct price and affordable to me, but then I thought this newly release 28mm with IS is well mated to a Canon 5D Mark III (with the newest firmware). The IS gains you 2-3 stops, plus with a 5D you get great ISO sensitivity anyway. The lens is light, small, easy, and very accurate focusing (I tested the focus against my LensAlign Long Ruler kit and it was spot on with center focus and wide area also. Yeah I know Canon does not give you a case (no big deal) but a hood for this lens is a must so I got a Vello for about 1/3 the price of a Canon. Over all a great shooter its proving to be an asset along with my Canon 24-105mm and 70-200mm. Is it expensive well yes a Great price[*]for what I paid for this it comes close to being quality of a L Red Line lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I have a Canon 7D and this lens is so close to what standard 50mm is for the crop sensor (44.8mm). I am using for street photography, as you normally don't need 1.4 or 1.8 appertures for street photography, because is very sharp, great in low light and easy to shoot on the fly, as the IS really helps you shoot a lot slower that normal (I have success with speeds as low as 1/10). I previously owned the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and I was missing this focal distance then I chosed the new Canon 28mm 2.8IS and no regreats at all.
The lens is small and light so you can carry all day long.
The only showstopper was the price but now you can fond it here in B&H with a lower proce making it very attractive option.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I use this on my Canon 6D as a general-purpose wide angle for stills. 28mm is wide enough to be useful in tight spaces and for basic architectural/landscape photos, but not so wide that it's unusable as a portrait lens.

The size and weight are awesome - paired with the light and portable 6D, this is a comfortable setup to carry around all day. Image quality is really good - plenty sharp, decent bokeh, accurate colors. It's just a sharp and neutral 28mm with IS. I'm sure the IS is awesome for video, but for stills it's not so important at this focal length. Regardless, it's nice to have. Despite being mostly plastic, the build quality is great - MF ring is smooth, the lens feels solid without being really heavy. And no complaints about AF, it's super snappy. Well done all around.

For the asking price, f/2.0 like the new 35mm IS would have been so much better - the size/weight sacrifice would definitely be worth it. I use this lens for portraits, and sometimes 2.8 just isn't fast enough. If the Zeiss 28/2.0 performed up to it's price, I would have purchased that. This seemed like the next best option. Maybe if the 35/2.0 comes down in price I'll get that, but I really like the 28mm focal length.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I was looking for a wide angle low light lens but didn't want to spend well over a $1000 for the L grade versions. I got this lens on sale and it has been a nice surprise. The IS allows shooting for to 1/4 sec when you brace the camera. And it is sharp with good contrast. I've been using it on a 5D2.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I got this lens to replace my 50mm1.4. The 50mm on the crop sensor of my Canon 60D was too tight for my average use. This lens fits the focal length I desire perfectly. I also love the IS for photo but especially video. The manual focus ring is no cinema ring but works well.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I have a Canon 7D and this lens is very close to that "standard 50mm standard" look on the crop sensor... Lens is very sharp and great in low light. The IS really helps you shoot a lot slower that normal. The lens is small and light and built strong enough, but not L lens strong. I love this lens so much, I am now saving for the 24mm USM IS... as there is more of that wide angle look to that lens.

                              Bokeh looks great too :)

                              I really haven't found anything I don't like!

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

Very nice little lens. Hard to choose between 24 and 28 mm. This is a little sharper, but doesn't quite have the dramatic composition capabilities of the 24 mm .
