I was looking for a solution to what I call lens creep. I have a Nikkor 70-210 zoom fixed 2.8, love the lens razor sharp and very heavy. Whenever I would shoot verticals the camera would rotate and not stay on position due to the weight of the lens. I was considering replacing lens with one with lens mount, but this is a sweet lens.
So I purchased this ballhead and an L-bracket. Next I set up the new approach with lens in a slight downward position locked on a grid target. Five hours later the lens is in the exact same position. The ballhead has no drift an easily handled the weight of the heavy lens. In the field the ballhead works smooth, easy to set and the centering feature is great. If you're looking for a great ballhead at a very competitive price - look no further.

I just bough this ballhead along with a 284CT tripod legs. it is my first good tripod so I´m not familiar with others. My biggest concern is that it is supposed to hold up to 30 kg but I tight the ballhead strong enough and still can move the plate in any direction with some moderate force. I think that I make not even 20 kg of force. How can I make a real test? are those 30 kg of force in any direction? cause I guess the force is not the same depending of the position or angle of the camera on the plate.

      Comments about Vanguard BBH-300 Ballhead:

This was a gift to myself. I had borrowed tripods with ball mounts and decided to get one for myself. They were a pleasure to use. I went for a ball joint for ease of setup and previous experience. The two handled contraption I had took too much time to setup and tear down while moving around. I stumbled onto this brand on the B&H site. The Rapid Level System is nice and distinguishes it from other brands I had looked at. I've used that feature several times and it is really handy. the rest of the controls are straight forward. To put it to the test I started shooting long exposures of whitewater in daylight with a neutral density filter and at night. The night time shots were were done with the Canon 70-200 attached to a 2x converter to a 7D body. It must have been 5 pounds or so; seemed pretty heavy. The results were great. Ater a couple of weeks I'm satisfied with this product. The B&H chat staff were also helpful to confirm that this head would mount to my tripod as well. That sealed the deal for me.

        Comments about Vanguard BBH-300 Ballhead:

This is hands-down one of the best ballheads that I have ever owned, especially considering the price point. I have other heads that have cost me more than twice the price, but they have nothing hug on this one! It locks up nice and tight and is really easy to adjust. I highly recommend it!

This ball head has excellent quality and workmanship and is a fantastic value for the money! I like it so much I just ordered a second one for another tripod that I have. Works as advertised and is extremely smooth, easy to adjust, and locks down as tight as a drum....

I was looking to upgrade my current support gear and found this to be a deal I couldn't pass up. B&H has this Ballhead on sale with the rebate for less than I could have purchased the BBH-100. Why would I not get the BBH-300 for $20 less?! Paired with the Vanguard Auctus carbon fiber legs, my camera has nothing to worry about as far as stability goes!

                        Comments about Vanguard BBH-300 Ballhead:

I have used this head for more than a year, on a weekly, if not daily, basis. I like it a lot, the construction is high quality, the QR plate allows me to quickly and easily move the camera around.

My one quible is that I wish the clamp were stronger. With a mid-size DSLR (Canon 60D) and a 70-200 f/4 mm lens, the clamp won't hold it in position usually if I am carrying the tripod over my shoulder. There is a lock mechanism, if you move the red slider all the way to the right and jigger the head, you feel it lock down and then the clamp will hold the camera completely solid. But, you shouldn't have to do that...just make the clamp more stronger.

This is a quibble, as I said. The head is fine for holding this camera solidly while shooting, but I am carefull to tighten the clamp a bit extra.

I read some reviews on this head & decided to go for it rather than BIG name brands at twice the price. The head arrives really well packaged. It seems very well made & is easy to operate ( I like the big knob that controls the ball action.... easy to grab & adjust ) I use it on Gitzo studex legs with a 300 F2.8 on a Canon 5D2. Rock solid. Good design , well made & smooth action. Works well & looks cool.
