FPS
This unit doesn't provide a great increase in frames per second - from 4 fps to 6 fps in DX mode, in FX mode the rate remains at 4 fps (for D800). This apparently is due to data transfer speeds rather than an inherent deficiency in the MB-D12.

AVAILABLE POWER
However, the gain in power endurance is highly valuable. Applications such as long shoots with high numbers of images, high AF and VR use, long exposures and overnight use of sensor triggers need a large bank of stored power and the MB-D12 provides this.

MAXIMISING POWER
The cost to maximise the usefulness of this unit, ie a couple of EN-EL18 batteries ($320 - outrageous), an MH-26 Dual Battery Charger ($320 - outrageous) and a BL-5 battery cover ($30)totals $670. This is quite ridiculous unless you also own a D4 and already have the MH-26 charger.

AA CELL ALTERNATIVE
The choice of AA batteries provides a cheaper (but less convenient) alternative. High output batteries such as the 2700 MAh PowerEx AA NiMH rechargeables perform extremely well in the MB-D12 (in terms of both available power and loss of charge when not in use). A friend gave me his MS-D12 AA Battery Holder. I keep this loaded with a second set of 8 charged PowerEx AAs. This allows a speedy change of batteries that is quicker than changing an EN-EL18 battery. Combined with an 8 cell charger, this system works extremely well. Total cost for 16 AA cells and charger was $AU 160.

HANDLING
The MB-D12 puts more camera in your hand. For me, this makes carrying and using the D800 easier. The increased weight provides more inertial mass and therefore, steadier hand held shots. The benefits of camera control placement for vertical shots are obvious in that you don't have to hold your arm high and wrap your hand over the body to reach the shutter button or aperture and shutter speed dials.

BUILD QUALITY
Excellent as you would expect from Nikon. (Considering the purchase price, you would also demand this.)

OVERALL
Expensive, but the benefits are significant for the the kinds of shooting I do. I wouldn't be without one.

Ridiculously expensive if you opt for the full EN-EL18 battery setup without the benefit of already having an MH-26 charger.

Overpriced

That's a great grip, great build quality but it does not seem to be any different from the MB-D10 for the D300/700. Except that the MB-D10 doesn't fit the D800.

I cannot see any reason why this grip has this outrageous price tag other than they could price it that high and so they did.

Priced at ~$200 it would have ben a five star review.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Cannot imagine switching to shooting vertical without it- makes the vertical grip natural while putting all the key controls at my fingertips.
Like the new more solidified connections Nikon used, better than older battery packs on older bodies. Little pricey, but worth it...

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I am a person who cannot shoot without having a vertical grip. It's a personal preference. This is lightweight, which I like because I don't want my gear to get any heavier than I need. Great hookup. Love that it has the option to use AA batteries, great for that time you forgot your extra battery back home when traveling. I also like the lock function on this, so I don't have it hit the shutter when it's on my shoulder when I'm not shooting.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

After experiencing the cheaper version of the battery grip from a third party, I opted to purchase the more expensive OEM version. So far it feels and operates as expected. I expect it to last much longer without issues. I gave it 4 stars only because of the high price point.

I have always used these on my cameras and this one works great like the others. They give you more to hold on to if you have big hands. This is my third one, used them on my FE2, D300 and now my D810. Soon to have the D500 with a battery pack also.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Purchased for use with Nikon D810. Adds nice balance that I'm used to and convenience of vertical grip/release. Firmly attaches and the extra battery time helps in prolonged shooting situations, especially useful when shooting video with live-view, which is a heavy battery drain.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Started out with vello grip I picked up for <$ bucks. Still was blowing through enl15 batteries. Bought this and the enl18a and I can shoot a wedding including a bunch of video without bring a charger. You need to buy the battery cover (BL-5) and I picked up a cheap charger that works great so far. MH-26 Nikon replacement dual charger. In crop mode the 810 now gets 7 fps. Grip is firm and Nikon quality. Took me a year to pull the trigger on the purchase glad I did.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

This Nikon battery grip feels and works as if it IS part of the camera body, unlike the aftermarket brand I previously purchased. I read the reviews and tried to save $, but in the end the aftermarket grip died within a year and I spent more money to buy this one. The buttons on the other model never felt quite right and were sluggish at best. I know this grip is way over priced (hence the 4 stars), but it is machined beautifully just like the rest of my Nikon equipment. I highly recommend biting the bullet and purchasing this unit. Otherwise, shoot me a message and I'll sell you a slightly used aftermarket one in near perfect condition. ;)

Somewhat over priced but well constructed, mounts to camera solidly. Adds some weight but I find it easier to hold the camera in both horizontal and vertical positions. Shutter release button and front and rear command dials have same tactile feel as those on the camera body.

I shoot street, portrait and amateur hockey - with this grip the camera feels solid and like an extension of my hand

The grip is excellent in all aspects except for the price. Unclear why it costs so much. Would not trust my D800 to anything other than original Nikon accessories. The first one I ordered did not come with a warranty card. It looked like it was returned. Called and B&H exchanged with no questions asked. The second one came with the warranty card.

Plain and simple ... This grip works like it should. Third party grips are a lot cheaper but you get what you pay for. I decided if I was going to pay $ dollars for a pro camera why would I compromise on the battery grip. Love the quality !

Over priced but better than aftermarket version

The MB-D12 battery pack works perfect. I had heard from other photographers that the aftermarket battery packs caused a lot of problems and damaged some cameras. Only down side, way overpriced.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I've through 3 of the cheap imitations (2 different makes) before splurging the money for the OEM unit. They all went bad after a while. The best was the last one which was okay for about six months. But even that one ultimately stopped working. They are okay I suppose if they are never removed from the camera. But I switch between an L-Plate for photography on a tripod and the grip on occasions. The cheap mock ups are not made to last that way. They look solid, but the connectors to the camera are more cheaply made than they look.
So far so good with the Nikon grip. It has already outlast the first two and I did a test of attaching it and removing it several times in a row, more than I ever did with my best unit, and each time it re-attaches just like the first time. I can already tell this is better built. Which is surprising because just by looking at the units they look so similar it is hard to believe that the non-OEM are junk. But that is exactly what they are.
There is no question that Nikon is greedy at that price: the D700 grip is about the same, but cost much less. It's not like the dollar is weak either. But as someone once told me: you will ultimately forget the price, but the quality will stay. And for sure this grip is made to last a long time. I highly recommend it if you can afford it.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

As with all my other DSLR's I have always added a grip. For me this is a must have. I did try to save money before and go with an off brand grip and saw the reason for the price difference. The third party grip felt plasticky, the locking wheel was loose and the controls felt spongy. Needless to say you get what you pay for. Not to mention if you're gonna pay close to $ for a camera, why get some cheap grip that will frustrate you with poor performance.
