Got NEX-7. Not a fan of zoom lenses. Had to go for two week trip. Zeiss 24/1.8 was out of stock. What my options? Looking on price and few reviews, I said to myself - OK, let's try it. After two week trip and 1.5K images here my observations: rattle - yes, it exists but it's described in documentation and not a so bad at all, personally I do not think it's even worth to mentioning. My assumptions - sound comes from diaphragm control not autofocus, I will explain bellow. Some people complaint about f/2.8 - ok, it's written in spec. It's what we got. I am pretty sure Sigma folks can design faster ones but they have budget, weight and other constraints. So, I am not complaining. As result, please do not expect a nice bokeh from it, "yes" you can back ground blurred and defocus but not to degree what it can be artistic. Now let's move to real thing - looks like Sigma engineers created a small miracle in target price range - f/2.8 with 7 elements from which 2 are aspherical. What's for? Answer - sharpness. Yes. It's really sharp. Comparing to Zeiss ZM 50/2 Plannar , I have nothing to complaint about. Colors are different, depends on your taste, but sharpness - same great level. I am impressed. Weight? - 135g / 4.8oz. it's feather like. Makes perfect travel combo for me. One more think what is not actually mentioned - it's internally focused. So, no air (dust) goes inside. It's sealed enclosure. Autofocus? I do not use it much, focus peaking on NEX-7 is perfect but when I needed it's there and works fast and silent. Only one problem which I observed, npot a show stopper, it's process how diaphragm works, looks like when camera just turned on it takes some time for internal motor to engage so it adds to startup time. Kit lens doesn't do that. But I am not in rush, so quality of images is more important. Sigma stripped down a lens hood in order to keep price low, so do your self a favor get one (see my recommendation bellow). Do not get this ugly UV filter which will destroy all len's qualities and introduce more flare. Hood will do much better job.

Let's start with the good. This lens is priced right, takes sharp photos and for the asking price it seems constructed well. If you are on a serious budget and want a "normal" focal length prime that is sharper and faster than the kit lens, you will most likely appreciate this lens.

Now for the bad. This lens though built good enough for the small asking price, does not give any sense of confidence. I find the build inferior to that of the Sony 18-55mm kit lens shipped with my NEX-5N. Something also upsetting is it's strange autofocus design, being some "linear" Sigma technology. What I do know is straight out of the box and when mounted on my 5N shut off, the lens makes a loud rattle when shaken. This only goes away when you power up the lens. It may seem trivial, but when walking around with the camera off, you constantly feel and hear the rattle/clunk. I cannot stand it and I worry the elements will damage themselves over time if the camera is moved about shut off.

Another concern with the build quality is the construction itself. Mine was shipped with a large piece of debris (appears too large to be dust) stuck to the inside of the front element. Since this was inside the lens itself there was no way for me to get it out with my Rocket Air or a microfiber cloth. This was a deal breaker and resulted it me returning the lens for store credit. I will be purchasing the Sony 50mm f/1.8 instead, and learning to deal with the extra reach.

What I did notice in testing this lens for several days before boxing it back up (had to wait for B&H to reopen after holiday week), was the auto focus was noticeably slower and less accurate than my 18-55mm kit lens. It would often hunt to find focus and routinely fail. I have always read about Sigma lenses having this issue, but I finally experienced it first hand. Very frustrating indeed.

To the defense of this lens, it does take sharp photos and is reasonably faster than the kit lens. I found having the extra stop or so (I believe the kit can only muster of f/4 of 4.5 @ 30mm), does help give you a chance of an ISO lower than 3200 in low light.

Great for my NEX-3

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras:

Bought a NEX-3 from Sony Refurbished about a year ago. Love it b/c of all the reasons I moved away from my Canon XSI

    (1) Small and light
    (2) Automatic face detection/focus
    (3) Video recording

Now decided to upgrade from the kit lens and read great reviews on this lens as a walk around replacement, specifically IQ.

So far it's been great. Love the smaller size and the low cost. Got it bundled with 19mm for $200.

Sold the kit back to B&H for $100...2 lenses for $100 is a great deal. BTW, also got a legacy 135mm f/2.8 w/e-mount adapter for $20 total - this is a great way to improve IQ for a low cost.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras:

Purchased this lens and the 19mm at the same time. Having read other reviews, I expected lightweight plastic lenses with metal mounts. Yes, I had read about the internal click when you shake the lenses like maracas. In my tests both primes outperformed the kit lens. In fact, sharpness of the 30mm was superior @ 3.5 (mildly stopped down, vs the kit set @ f7.1. Excellent quality across the frame. I intend to utilize these optics on my NEX-6 and NEX-3 for my critical work. By the way, these guys are not finished to the degree my Hassy lenses are - but as far as I know, nobody criticized Picasso for using cheap looking brushes either.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras:

I got this lens because I was dissatisfied with the 16-50mm Sony power zoom kit lens, and don't mind carrying two or three primes around with me. While not a truly fast lens, it IS fast compared to the Sony 16-50, and WAY sharper too. The best thing is that this lens is extremely sharp, even wide open, which makes the f/2.8 maximum aperture truly usable. Some people don't like the bokeh, but I find it to be pretty nice, usually. Yes, the lens is plastic, but it feels nice and seems durable. Only thing I would wish for is that it was PDAF compatible on PDAF-capable NEX bodies (it's not) Overall, an extremely good value.

My NEX-EA50UH kit lens and this lens have the same exposure setting in the AE mode (I set my Sony kit lens at ~30mm). I believe this lens has more saturation than my kit lens and it is a sharp lens (I was kind of surprised). When I turned the lens left and right gently, one thing gets my immediate attention is the lens elements assembly floats in the barrel and I am not sure why Sigma design it like that. Another thing is the Alignment Dot on the lens is very humble design so it does not catch my eyes right away. Other than that, it is neck to neck with my Sony kit lens.

It is light and made from plastic and not metal except for the mount, which is metal. It is not a Pro lens but solid. The focus is fast and mounts smoothly. The pictures are crisp and sharp. I am a happy camper

Bought it with the 19mm bundle which makes it almost unbeatable when it comes to price/performance.
Yes it would have been nice if it had been a little bit smaller and yes it would have been nice to have some kind of stabilizer (especially for the video) but for that price you get a really good lens.
Sharpness is superb in the center and the corners is almost as good. If you do not put you main object/focus right in one of the corners you will not notice any lack of performance. The picture will just end up very, very sharp.
Very light weight and convenient package together with Nex-7.

I got this lens as part of the twin lens package a day before I got a second hand SEL24F18Z. Naturally I took a few test shots to see how much better the 24mm was.

Perhaps surprisingly, or not surprisingly (as some have commented previously), both the 30mm and the 24mm were just as sharp! Now I havent actually took many shots with the 24mm to see how good the much vaunted colour rendition is.

However based on what I can see on the camera screen, pictures from both the 30mm and 24mm were just as sharp, which is pretty darn amazing given that the 30mm costs about a tenth the price of the 24mm and weighs so much lighter.

It's really a no brainer if youre looking for a sharp lens for the e mount. As many have said before, it is absolutely one of the most value-for-money items I have ever gotten.

Good sharp lens. Bought this for my Sony NEX-5N. I keep this lens on it, instead of the kit lens now.

Light weight and extremely cheap lens. Great for my holiday snap shots up and about in New York city. Great indoors and out doors.

I was satisfied with its auto focus accuracy and speed.
