I am an amateur photographer, and I have recently increased the number of shots I take on each shoot. I shoot RAW and the files from my Nikon D800 are pretty large. I needed a card reader that was a little more efficient than the one I have now, it can take a long time to download 500 40MB files. I have a MacBook Pro and work on Aperture. Frankly, I'm not even sure I have a USB 3.0, but it said it's compatible with 2.0 so I purchased it anyway.

The card reader is significantly faster than my old one, I would estimate 2-4 times faster. Now I don't have to leave and make myself a sandwich and tea while I wait for the files to download. Yay, speed.

The other thing I like is that it attaches to the USB port through a cord (I suggest adding that to the photo of the product), which is great because if I have something else in the second USB port they both fit.

The only very minor criticism I have is that the card reader pops up a little too easily so it sometimes does that while I'm putting the card reader away or if I move my bag around a bunch. But it's not really a big problem

I'd give this product zero stars if I could. Not because it doesn't work with the new Macs. I understand that there can be compatibility issues. My problem is that if you go on the Lexar website, browse to the support page for this product, read the FAQ's and find "Does the reader work with a MAC® system?" you will see (at least as of the time of this review) that the answer is "Yes, the reader works with Mac OS 10+."

So I called their tech support and asked if there have been any compatibility problems with the new USB 3.0 Macs. The answer they gave me was "Yes. They're working on the issue with Apple." So.... If you know that there's an issue, and you're working with Apple to fix it, why haven't they admitted as much on their website? They told me that they have no idea when or if the issue would be resolved, and advised me to return it and buy a different reader.

I checked their compatibility page and verified that it worked with a Mac before I bought the thing, and meanwhile they knew there was a problem. Swell...

I have had other Lexar readers in the past, and I use their 600x card. I know they make great products, but there is no excuse for a known issue like this to not be indicated on the web site.

Poor, poor quality control

By Keith Muccilli

About Me Professional

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

No stars - This item is poor quality and Lexar does not stand behind it. First the usb cord was defective. Lexar replaced it. Then the reader itself stopped working. Without a power light, it's hard to tell. All you can do is wait a few minutes to see if it starts reading. (that's a poor design choice) Anyway, Lexar did replace the reader. The third time I used the replacement, a pin broke off. I checked the card (a Lexar BTW) and it was fine. This time, Lexar refuses to replace the reader. I am tired of dealing with this. I have a 15-year-old Sandisk reader that has gotten me through. I think I will stick with Sandisk and will no longer purchase Lexar products.

Cable and Reader Issues

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

I have bought this reader for work as I am a professional sports photographer.

The reader was very good initially. After using it for a while the cable connection to the reader stopped connecting correctly as I needed to re-position the cable connection in order to get the files transferred.

This to me is a weak link in the design of this reader and needs to be addressed by Lexar

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

The dual slot is super useful for people whose cameras have both CF and SD slots (a lot of the late Nikons for example.) And USB 3.0 is wayyyy faster than 2.0 which is useful for today's large files. No complaints at all, does what it's supposed to, super well. Small enough to go anywhere in my photo backpack and looks sturdy enough for years of use.

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

I love this little reader. It's small, it's simple, and it just does what I need it to. I only use cameras with SD and CF cards (as I suspect most other people do), so I don't need some massive multi-card reader that does 3 or 4 other formats I will never use. It is small enough that I can easily leave it plugged in next to my computer without it taking up much space, or pack it in a gear bag and take it with me.

My PC died on me and I ordered one of these. Reads my CF's and SD's, no interruptions of loss of data. Easy to pack in a bag, nice and compact. I like that the reader collapses into a protective clear case/shell.
        Well thought out design. A+

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

I've been using an LRW025URBNA reader by Lexar. What I did not realize until damaging a UDMA 7 compact flash card is that this reader is not UDMA 7 compatible. After extensive chats with Lexar technical services I decided to replace it with this reader by Lexar.

As I learned, the hard way, when you use a Non UDMA 7 reader with a UDMA 7 card it can work; however the reader is too slow for the card. The card acting too fast actually forces corruption into the card. Over time whether it be one use or hundreds of uses the card will eventually find the corruption and cause it to have major problems or fail altogether. Hope this helps.

I use this in conjunction with my mac book pro as its a small interface for the two card types I need for my D810. Easy to pack and travel with and got it on sale so it was very reasonable. I purchased it as I have been using Lexar readers for some time now due to their reliability and speed. This unit does not disappoint.

Love this Card reader! I'm shooting raw video on the 5D3 and pulling 20GB off my cards seem like nothing. No complaints, but the plastic it's made out of doesn't see that strong. If my toddler managed to get his hands on it it'd probably be cracked in no time. Just keep if out of of little hands and you won't have to endure any more long file transfer sessions.

This is a basic card reader. It has the two card formats that I use in 5D Mark III, so I bought it to take with me to events. It's solidly build and relatively compact. It feels like it will hold up to the wear and tear of travel.

I do like the clamshell design that hides the card slots and keeps them free of debris when the unit is in my camera bag. It pops open quickly and cleanly.

I like how compact this item is, however, I'm starting to get annoyed at how easily it pops up when it's in my camera bag (not in use). I fear dust and other particles will find its way inside since the item pops open all the time.

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

As a wildlife photographer, I download thousands of photos to my laptop. The Lexar Dual-Slot UDMA 7 card reader, with its USB 3.0 speed, allows me to quickly and efficiently download my photos and get back out in the field. I'm very pleased with this card reader.

I use this card reader to import large batches of RAW files and it's been working great so far. It's a lot faster than the last card reader I used, which makes my life easier!

Comments about Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader (UDMA 7):

I've been using the Lexar reader for the past 6 months. So far, no issues with anything. I really like the cable length that's provided, it's long enough for usual use (some readers come with a cable that's way too small, but not this one). I also like the ability for it to collapse/close, it is a good way to prevent any dust or junk getting into the contact points. All in all, I like the form factor because it's small to toss into my bag when I go for a shoot on the go. Also, the price for this was awesome.
