This tripod is amazingly stable for its height and light weight. Coupled with a BH-55 head, it meets my need for landscape and fine art photography - even here in the Rocky Mountains where the ground is never level. Imagine the luxury of an extra foot (or two) of extension when you really need it. I'm 6' 1" and can stand underneath it without ducking!

I want to talk about some of the good and bad points of my Gitzo 3 Series.Good: 1) This tripod looks beautiful with its carbon fiber weave, speckled paint, and slim leg locks. 2) The 3 series is rock solid. I do a lot of long exposures and this tripod kept everything sturdy and sharp. Up until the leg became loose. 3) The twist locks on the legs are great. With just a small easy turn the legs lock tightly into place. Much better quality twist locks than other carbon tripods I've owned. Bad: 1) Poor quality paint. After one year small pieces of paint started to chipping off on the top plate of the tripod where the leg angles are adjusted. I emailed their customer service multiple times, with no response back. The problem got progressively worst as more pieces of paint started to come off. 2) Weak casting, not CNC milled like Really Right Stuff. Gitzo and Really Right Stuff are the two top manufacturers for carbon fiber tripods and are priced about the same. Really Right Stuff is slightly more expensive. The largest difference in quality between the two is the fact that Really Right Stuff CNC mills a solid piece of metal for all of it metal parts. Gitzo uses castings to form its metal parts. Casting is a cheaper method of forming parts. The problem with casting is that it is not as precise or as strong as CNC milling a solid piece of metal. Cutting corners like this has diminished Gitzo's quality over the years. 3) Poor customer service. I email customer service numerous times about the paint coming off with no response. After two years of owning the tripod a leg became loose at the metal leg connection, I finally got in contact with customer service and I was surprised that they do not do their own warranty repair work. I was given the name of a third party repair guy that does repair and warranty work for Gitzo. My warranty claim was denied because the loose leg was caused by corrosion. The funny thing is, the leg connection was one of the few metal pieces that the paint had not chipped off of. The repair charge to replace the metal parts and fix the loose leg came out to $[$]. Which is basically their way of saying just spend a little more and buy a brand new one, while I keep your old tripod because it's not worth paying the shipping to send it back. If you purchase a Gitzo tripod, don't expect it to be your life long tripod. If you get 4 or 5 years out of it, you've already doubled my use out of it.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

I've used Leitz & Monfratto tripods for 30 plus years with Hasselblad & Sinar gear, up until now have always invested more in lenses and lights than tripods. There is no comparison between the Gitzo and Leitz or Monfratto in features and a firm shooting platform. The Gitzo X-Long is nice and tall, with 3 of the 4 sections extended my camera is at eye level. I"m 6'2", so this is important. I coupled this with an Arca-Swiss Monoball p0 Ballhead with Classic Quick Release & Kirk plates. The tripod is lightning fast to set up, has three positions, the lowest of which is 4.2" from the ground. The largest lens I use fixed on a Nikon D810 is a Nikon 80-200, f2.8 mounted with a Kirk plate, #LP27, which is rock solid in landscape or portrait orientation. This truly is a fine piece of equipment, smooth, quick, versatile, extremely solid, light and folds down small for travel. I create product, portrait, architecture and landscape images. Thus far, I am very satisfied. Time will tell how it endures the knocks of field work and travel. B&H provided exemplary service, which is why they have been my Number One choice Photographic Supplier for over 30 years.

I use this tripod for both photography and videography, primarily in the outdoors. Having the extra long legs is great when you are in uneven terrain. When it's flat, I don't extend it the full length.

This thing is massive, but not too heavy. Great tripod when you might be standing on rocks or logs and need the legs to perch below where you are standing. In case of emergency, bring a big tarp to drape over this tripod and you will have a warm and comfortable shelter that will sleep 2 quite comfortably.

Just wonderful! This tripod is everything I was looking for and so much more. I love the height, it's sturdier than I had thought possible... It just feels really, really good. I know I'll be very happy with this for a long time to come shooting in extreme winter conditions. I've paired it with the Arca-Swiss Z1 head and couldn't be happier.
If you're on the fence with this, it's worth the money, you won't regret it.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

I am one to buy cheep once to try it to see if I like it than spend the big money once so I never have to buy again. This is replacing a used bogen 3021 that I thought would be good enough for as much as I use a tripod. Till I started to "use" the tripod. I found it to be fine if I was doing flash but not much else. I read all the reviews for all types of tripods but most things I read for doing nature kept pointing to the 3 series for it's load capacity & flexibility. I went with the xlong from some photographers stating that they wish they had just a little more leg for those times on the side of a hill. I have had this for 2 weeks now and have used this more in that short time than I used my old tripod in the 2 years I had it. Ultra stable as under most common use the legs are hardly extended but when you need the reach it is easy as a twist, no more slouching. I also really like the safety lock for retaining the plate, saves on making one or purchasing one. My only con and it is small and liveable is I wish it had spring loaded leg locks as I inadvertantly released one of the locks but the legs are so stiff to open that the tripod didn't go anywhere. I just make sure the locks are in place now before I set it down.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

Used with a 50-500mm Sigma/Bigma, Jobu Pro2 Gimbal head and Nikon D800, this tripod is rock solid. Once you have the legs set, it does not move. The leg extension is a snap once you get used to how it operates. It is not an easy adjustment from the snap and slip designs, so give it some time for you to get used to it. Spreading it out is not a one handed job. This is a take your time, set it up, then shoot apparatus. Although it takes a little muscle to open the legs, once set, the stiffness pays off

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

I'm an avid amateur photographer shooting mostly landscape and some 'Urban Grunge' stuff. A tripod is an essential part of my work. A great tripod makes it so much easier to move around and get the right shot. This Gitzo tripod is a GREAT tripod. The legs are rock solid and easy to adjust. I love how low this thing can go (no center column). I mated it with a Really Right Stuff BH-55 head for a great combo.

This isn't the lightest tripod out there. The extra set of legs adds a bit of weight. It is still much lighter than my 15 year old Manfrotto though!

Two thumbs up for the Gitzo!

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

I should say that I ended up exchanging this tripod for the shorter model (GT3542LS). It was just more height than I needed. I did set it up though to test it out, and I was very impressed by how solid it was extended to almost full height.

I set my full rig up on it to test it: Wimberely Head, Nikon D3, Nikon f4 600lens, 2x teleconverter, flash bracket, external battery, so there was a lot of weight on top. It was more than sturdy enough even for all of that. I think Gitzo's maximum lens recommendations are a little on the conservative side. A set-up with a 600 lens would be solid.

One thing to consider (that was also a deal breaker for me) is that it only folds down to 24". That means it will have to fit diagonally in most large suitcases. If you travel a lot, that could be a major space hog in the suitcase.

Overall, I highly recommend this tripod. Well worth the expense.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long):

being 6'3" i was thinking the X-long tripod would be my best bet and it is! i only extend 2/3 sections to have my camera at eye level. its quick and easy to open up and collapse. i only need one hand and a half a turn to lock it in place. now i have the advantage for eg. at a surf comp with the tripod fully extended i could stand on a rock and get a better perspective with nothing obstructing. i can barely touch the top of the tripod when its all fully extended.
the only issue i am having is the pan lock on my manfrotto photo/video head is unable to spin around and hits the tripod plate. iv found a tension where i only need a half turn to tighten the pan lock, but slight annoyance.

Great tripod I bought for bird photography. It is very stable with long lenses. It's pretty light to carry around over the shoulder and can extend very high when need be.
