Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

I was using a Series 3 (Gitzo) tripod with an 800mm lens and the 1Dx which is quite a load, especially in windy conditions. This combo was pushing the limits of my series 3. The Series 5 handles the weigh easily even with a sand bag attached. I see no drawbacks other than the obvious weight and bulk concerns, but no one's going on a long hike with an 800mm, pro body and a tripod anyway.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

When planning the purchase of my Sony 500mm f/4 lens, I wanted to be sure it was supported by the best gimbal and tripod available. The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base was an easy choice and I totally agree with their recommendation to use their gimbal head on a Gitzo Systematic tripod.

I chose a Series 5 6X carbon fiber model that is rated to support 88 pounds. It is rock solid. The construction is very beefy yet it weighs only 6 pounds. This tripod does not have a center column. The gimbal attaches directly to the top of the tripod on a removable plate that locks firmly into place. The locking rings on the legs are easy to turn and lock securely with only a quarter turn. The legs do not rotate even if all the locking collars are loosened at the same time. The second leg section is marked so you can easily set the height at eye level. There is a bubble level on the top for level adjustments on uneven terrain. Included with the tripod were two optional sets of feet. One is a unique set of feet to be used in the snow. When folding the tripod, because there is no center column to stop the legs, they can pivot past center. This can be a little awkward but it is a minor issue that I've learned to work around. Otherwise, I could not be more pleased with this tripod.

Bought this to use with a Nikon 500mm lens. Using the Wimberly 200 head. Impressed with build. Very solid on my trial run. Comforting when using lots of expensive gear. The disadvantage is the bulk and weight, but that pales when to compared to $ plus of gear broken on the ground.

I bought this to use with my 500mm and Gimbal head. It is built like a rock. its really stable, and solid. It is not light weight.
it is pricy also but imo, worths every penny, especially if you are using a big lens.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

My primary use is for wildlife with my 400/2.8 lens. Also for general nature and landscape photography.
Upon removing the GT5542LS from its box, I was impressed by the design and build quality, and am assured that it will be more than capable of providing a sturdy, rock solid platform for my gear. I like the reference marks on the top section which put the height right where I need it for my 400mm lens and Wimberly gimbal head. However i would prefer having them on the bottom section of the legs, so the thinnest legs would be extended less. I guess a permanent marker would make this work for me.

Least liked feature is the price, but that said it is an exceptional value and worth every penny.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

Sometimes it is just that simple: you get what you pay for. At $xxxx, one might think it insane to buy this tripod (add a comparable head, and you are at $xxxx). But then you use it: strong, light, and moving parts that work with the smoothness one expects from high end aircraft parts. i have bought and used excellent $xxx tripods for my regular lens. no complaints about those and i continue to use them. i bought this tripod to use with a Canon 600mm f/4, a nine pound lens, to photograph birds. Solid footing is an understatement, yet it is so light that you can pick up camera, lens, tripod/head and easily walk to a new location and replant/balance it in seconds (i'm average build/strength for a 5'11" guy). it is truly difficult to find something to not like about this tripod but if pressed me, i'd say it would be nice to have scale/ruler on the legs so you could quickly make them the same intermediate lengths (easily solved with a marker if need be). If you are serious enough to buy a pro lens in the 5+lbs category, then this is the tripod that will do your lens justice. You can certainly buy cheaper tripods to use, but compared to what a pro lens like the Canon 600mm or comparable costs, is this really that much? You won't be disappointed. You get what you pay for.

Rock solid you can see and feel that it's made to perfection. I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this tripod if you have heavy gear.

For me, this tripod replaces a G3541 and a G1500. It's as steady as the G1500 and only a little heavier than the G3541.

I'm using it with a D800E with lenses up to 300mm 2.8G, where every bit of stability matters.

                      It's perfect!

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

Being a landscape photographer, I was looking for the sturdiest tripod I could find, but that would also not break my back on long hikes. This tripod is absolutely the best in the market with those specifications in mind.

With the capacity this tripod can hold, I will absolutely never have to upgrade when using supertelephoto lenses and when using short lenses, I can know the tripod will hold its ground. Add a little weight on its hook, and BAM! it's rock solid. You can almost kick it and it won't move.

Extending the legs are super easy and super fast, but one of my only concerns are the locking positions of the legs. To me, they seem to lock in a few odd positions, but it's something that is easy to work around.

Mind you, this is not a tripod you want to take on a ridiculously long hike if you don't want to carry a lot of extra weight. It is not heavy when comparing it to other models having the same weight capacity, but you will definitely be able to feel it after a few hours.

                      Definitely has my recommendation!

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):

First off, I also have the GT3541L. The GT3541L definitely has some flex with the legs fully extended. The GT5542 has no flex what so ever fully extended, it's ROCK SOLID! It has a quality feel and exceptional construction that I have come to expect from Gitzo. The rubber feet on the GT5542 are larger and also are removable to expose spiked feet under them. I can see me buying some back up rubber feet replacements down the road. The tripod head mounting plate is redesigned and has a safety mechanism so it really can't fall out like the GT5541 plate could. The mounting plate also has an opening for a strap to hook to, which helps on the upper end. I wish the hook under the mounting plate was a closed loop so you could hook a carabineer to it. It's about two pounds heavier than the series 3 but seams easier to carry with a strap for short hikes. Opening, closing, and adjusting the leg angle are very smooth and easy. I considered the RRS 34 but read reviews that said it did have some flex but not as much as the Gitzo series 3. As long as I don't have a long hike I prefer the GT5542 over the GT3541L. I use it with a RRS BH55 head mostly. Wimberley WH-200 II head for anything 400mm f2.8 longer and heavier. GT5542 is much more stable with the 400mm f2.8 than the GT3541L. For anything 300mm and under the GT3541L is absolutely stable. I couldn't be happier with the GT5542.
