I've been taking family portraits for almost 3 years now. I went from a Canon T1i, to the 7D, to 5D Mark III.

Anyone looking to upgrade from the 7D has a tough decision on their hands, as the 7D is a great camera. After reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to take the plunge.

I received my camera yesterday, and already used it for a family portrait session (natural light). All I can say is WOW! I use Lightroom to edit all photos taken ~ brighten eyes, soften skin, etc. Instead of spending hours in Lightroom, I was able to turn the photos around in a fraction of the time. The clarity is undeniable. I was able to crop the photos and not lose any sharpness (to the naken eye).

I performed a quick comparison between the two cameras using my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. This comparison really doesn't do the 5D3 justice, but at least it will give you a good idea of the clarity, color, brightness, crop factor variation and sharpness difference between the two cameras.

Hope you find this useful, as I would have during my comparision shopping.

I shoot weddings professionally. I use a journalistic style where I need to respond to a shot quickly. Lots of useful new features. Focus seems to work better from a technical standpoint. To me, they are also holding back on some featurs so they will always be able to come out with something new on the next model. This I understand. What I don't understand is going backwards with features. The ability to see a highly visible focus point PRIOR to focus lock is gone. They have technical reasons for doing this but its hard to get used to if you had the Mark II, use manually selected points, and shoot where split seconds count. They made it better with firmware, but its still frustrating. Also apparently a fairly common issue is the joystick is fickle/inconsistent on many builds. The place where you rest your left fingers on the case while reviewing a shot is now angled, creating a very cool looking apearance and also making it much harder to hold in this position. You could hold it by the lens but if you shoot 1000's of images in one day you will know what I mean here. I wonder how much they tested it with real photographers. Overall I am happy (not thrilled) with it, so I am keeping it. It's the only option now at this price/preformance level.

This is my first full frame DSLR. I have had it for just a couple of weeks and it is a great camera. I also shoot with the Leica M and it's a terrific complement.

A serious flaw - shame on Canon!

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Being the owner of a 5D the mkIII for well over a year, I have fired 27,000 frames with it. It works pretty well in connection with my corporate bespoke photo library work (all of which is on client locations), being a significant improvement over the mkII. I have no gripes with the battery pack extension, the resultant heavy combo being pretty easy to use.I am not an equipment geek. I just like my job taking photographs. Therefore, I like equipment that seemlessly works. However, for me, the mkIII is not a seemless piece of kit. To me, the Canon WF frame transmitter seemed rediculous. Consequently I opted for CamRanger which works extremely well and has a great interface for art directors on the iPad. Except ....It is now unreliable because of the camera's pathetic mini USB connection - which is nearly worn out now and expensive and inconvenient to replace. Its a disgrace and is an example of an item 'not being designed for the purpose for which it was intended', assuming that Canon accepted that most of us use card readers and don't download from the camera. What was needed was a cable with a standard USB connection one end, and a bespoke screw-in fitting the other (not the D mkIV solution which is far from perfect), or at least some other solution where, if the male cable fitting becomes damaged, the femail camera's input does not. This is an example of where technology is good, but where the engineering is poor. When are camera and camera gear manufacturers going to accept that their products are going to be used in very demanding environments and circumstances? We all know that many pro Canon camera users buy the 5D mkIII while waiting for a 1DS mkIV (if it ever transpires). So, Canon ... please wake up to the reality of pro usage in all areas. What a shame you did not address this matter at the design stage where you surely must have known there would be problems. Amoungst many (note the various devices that have been launched by third parties to help but not succeed in solving the problem), I am extremely irratated.Generally, Camera manufacturers should accept that they can't provide everything and that they should work with third parties to accomodate what their customers need. This applies probably to all manufacters, and third parties alike too.I am bound to buy Canon again (I am committed to the system via previous purchases - I am not deliberately brand loyal). However, I would add that Canon products have served well in securing a good income for a modest, freelance commercial photograher. Thanks Canon - but please listen to us.

It only took 1 week for me to be able to work the controls on my new EOS 5D, used the video from B&H and another one I found - it is super. Just wish I had done this earlier. Went to a night shoot after only 1 week with this camera with no problems at all with changing the controls in the dark. Have also done daylight photographs handheld and love the color and crispness

I've waited too long to upgrade my trusty 5Dm2's. I should have done it a year ago, when 5Dm3 was released. First wedding, and the camera shows why it's worth upgrade. Fast and accurate focus in low-light situations. 3x more accurate then previous model. Files are loaded with quality and sharpness. Camera do needs to be custom setup when taken out of the box first time - there are many more features and settings then in previous model. So it's mandatory to spend some time getting to know it better.

I've had this for about 2 months now and have done a series of studio portrait shots, misc landscapes, and a trip to NY's 9/11 museum. The museum was DARK; a lot of the shots were ISO 3200-6400. Have upgraded from (most recently) the orig. 7D, where I would have been endlessly fiddling with noise reduction. Even at 6400 I did virtually no DNR AT ALL. It is heavy, and not cheap, but you are getting your moneys worth. Luckily the controls are close enough to the 7D to make what could have been a considerable learning curve quite manageable. 2 card slots is lovely.Have not tried the video yet, I'm mostly a stills guy.

I went from a 60D to the 5D Mark III and my skills jumped through the roof. The camera is so good you are forced to upgrade your skills to use it. The image quality I had before and what I get no is no comparison. Buying this camera made me want to become a professional photographer and got me started on improving my skills by studying photography and learning what I was doing wrong. I will say this camera drove me to become a better photographer. Features, low light, its all there. The only thing missing is a tilt screen, then it would be the perfect camera hands down.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I use two 5D Mark III's for weddings. I was also using a 1DX too, but I was just too loud during the getting ready and ceremony. So I now use the 5Ds and am very happy with their performance--files at high ISO are amazing, focusing is now outstanding, the camera is quite in silent mode and it easy to use. I also love how I can control the 600EX-RTs through the camera menu for off camera flash. It is a great camera for weddings. I do wish that it had a tilt/swivel LCD. Oh, and the focusing can be difficult with low light and off camera flash because the canon radio remote doesn't have an focus assist light.

You get what you pay for, in this case its an awesome full-frame camera that turns out to be the industry standard. If you are not shooting on the 5d mark iii you are behind in the game.

I do mostly nature photography. The shutter release on this camera is smooth and silky. I tried the multiple exposure function: easy and fun to use! The controls are easily accessible. I love it! My one "not so great" is that the S series of lenses that fit on my 50D do not fit on this. Had to get a new lens. Bummer!

What's great...not afraid to go up to ISO 800-1600 when lighting conditions are sub optimal. Also, I like having more control of shooting parameters 1 button away.
