Comments about Sony PMW-F3L Super 35mm XDCAM EX Full-HD Compact Camcorder with S-Log Gamma:

I purchased the F3 to enhance the film quality of a cultural documentary series we make in China. So far it has helped to render this film (we are currently in production in Jiangsu) the best film yet out of 10, and we are only 25% finished. Our DP makes very good use of the camera, although he is not as capable of reacting as quickly as he would be on a normal broadcast camera or an EX3. This is largely due to the fact that I have no lens with a large focal variation. However, even with one the camera isn't very snappy or ergonomic. It is meant to be built up, which means running a Ki Pro Mini, an EFV, Anton Bauer plate, dtaps, cheese and rods... It is a lot to look after. When at the ready, we can get that rig out of the vehicle, onto sticks and shooting in 30-40 seconds. The XF300 we have can start shooting within 10 on sticks.I did purchase, from [*], the ET F3 riser plate with magnetic shoulder pad, which in conjunction with a 15mm rail system and Shape handles can give the operator a decent ability to run handheld. The greatest benefits the F3 has offered come from SLOG. Without a doubt this camera would not be a logical choice without it. In conjunction with a Duclos ZF.2 lens kit, the F3 is turning out some amazingly beautiful footage for a very affordable price.Things I/we don't like. - Insanely useless rear viewfinder that just gets in the way.- Won't shoot any greater resolution than 1080. Why not offer 2k or 2.5k at least? The technology existed! Could a firmware update offer this or was the sensor limited from production? The FS700 kills the F3 in this regard. Yes, the F3 has great advantages, but the FS700 seems to have jumped 2 or 3 iterations ahead of the F3 in important ways in a very short time span. This is extremely frustrating to endure and makes me want to just throw down the money for an Alexa.- Slow motion is limited. The FS700 kills the F3 in this regard again.- No intelligent programming for time-lapse work. Why does Sony not include auto-exposure options at a minimum? I can remove flicker in post, but I cannot stand by my camera and turn aperture over the course of an hour. This is a gross oversight and I'd like to invite myself to sit with Sony and discuss a number of things that can give them a real edge in the future.- Deep menus. Once you are used to them, okay, you can make changes reasonably fast, but there were better ways to go about this.Overall, I am happy with my purchase and do not regret it. I know that it has done its job as expected if not better. However, even though I bought this camera only a month ago, I do not know if I would recommend it to anyone who has some time to bide. I didn't. I was leaving too fast. I'd bargain that within a year, an F3 killer shows its face. The FS700 tries, but without SLOG and other necessary pro features, who cares? Someone must have been thinking as I have been and done something about it. Just hope it comes in at a decent price point. All the best from China...

Comments about Sony PMW-F3L Super 35mm XDCAM EX Full-HD Compact Camcorder with S-Log Gamma:

I am a cinematographer that recently wrapped on an indie feature. We originally were planning on trying to rent an Alexa or Red but combined with lenses, it was out of budget. We were then introduced to the Sony F3. This particular unit had S-log installed which almost turns this camera into a baby Alexa. S-Log is a software that increases the dynamic range of this camera by almost 14 stops. The image this thing puts out is AMAZING. Absolutely some of the best footage I have ever seen. We recorded out to a PIX 240 to capture at a much higher bit rate and a color space of 4.2.2 to native PRO-RES Quicktime movie files. No transcoding needed in post. In conjunction with the camera we used Zeiss CP.2 lenses. The whole ensemble was just a dream to work with. Absolutely stunning imagery. The S-log software was very kind to our lean light package. I rarely had to push past the native ISO of 800. I found that with S-log, I didn't have to tweak or perfect my lighting as much since it had such nice roll offs into highlights and darks. I would HIGHLY recommend this camera for pro work.
