I wanted this filter to slow down the shutter speed in bright light. Originally I was considering some other brands at the same price point, but the design and performance of this filter really stand out. First, it has a greater ND range than every other filter I could find. Second, though threaded in 77mm in my case, the filter surface itself is larger, like having a built in step ring. This prevents vignetting. Third, the filter is quite thin, about the same as a thin mount polarizer. This is amazing considering most other filters I found are as thick as three standard filters. Throw in the Schott glass and the brass construction and this filter is almost perfect. There is a slight amber color drift at maximum effect, but due to physics is unavoidable. 5 Stars.

Not a good choice

I tried this variable ND filter .
It was disappointing .I thought it's providing a reduction of about 11 stop but it is like 8 or 9.

    Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

I bought it because its the best as far as vari ND filters. Why would anyone put a low quality Vari ND filter on high end lens. Defeats the purpose. BUT, the only gripe about this filter is you will not get 11 stops. You will realistically get only about 8 stops. After that, you will get a crazy dark/light blochy pattern in the pictures. I called schneider and they confirmed. Which leads me to wonder why that make it to "11"? Never the less, it is still the best Vari ND on the market. O, one more gripe, the front is not threaded, which, there is really no reason that could not have been.

    Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

The filter is great and operates as expected, but I am not sure it really reach the 11th stop, as a matter of fact, if what I have seen on Youtub reviews, in Stop 10 one should not be able to see anything at all, and I can see in the darkest setting which makes me think, the filter only reach the 9th Stop. Aside from that, I got other med-range filters and they cam with a pouch to protect the filter, this filter is the most expensive filter I have seen, and yet it is shipped in a plastic box and not a secure one at that. Schneider, sham on you for that.

      Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

The main purpose to order that filter was to allow to use my CCD sensor equipped H5D's live view function via tethered Phocus software during daylight. That works really well. While experimenting with that filter I found out, that it works pretty well for my landscape photography, e.g. smoothing water movements, etc. That's a real surprise for me since many people reported about uneven darkening effects of variable ND filters. I couldn't figure out that effect with this Schneider filter.

There is only very little shift of white balance which can readily be fixed with a very minor adjustment. The shift is almost negligible compared to my B+W and Heliopan fixed ND filters.

The filter is very well made. There is no friction when screwing it onto the lens. And it does not stuck! Adjustment of ND effect is smooth and precise due to marks on the filter's ring on two opposite sides. So it isn't too hard to read.

The only issue is its size. That filter is much bigger than a standard 77mm filter. So consequently the lenses' original lens hoods cannot be used!

      Not really 11 stops

        Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

I've owned this filter for a few years and have enjoyed using it. However, if you're thinking you can make water look smooth and clouds move because the filter density is "11 stops" look elsewhere. This filter is really a 6 stop filter. For example, if a scene is 1/1000 then the max density will give you 1/15. Also, yellows take on a really weird look if you use this filter. I'm assuming that's because of the polarizers.

Amazing Filter, I purchased one to use on a BMCC while I placed Schneider .9ND's on a BMPCC. The colors that I got from this filter were amazing. In large measure because the filter appears to also have an IR reduction function. Matching the shots from the two cameras proved very difficult because of this so be forewarned I think this filter also cuts IR.

            Great product highly recommended.

            Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

I did not appreciate that with the large oversized filter that it precluded the use of a lens hood. This would limit the filter to use in shaded areas or having the sun at my back whenever using this filter and this is a very real limitation of the Schneider design.

I just took this filter out on my 2nd wedding video and it was a must have for the project. The only thing that makes me worried is that since it is so big, I am afraid that I will break it. Can't find a cap that would fit on it so I will be looking into some kind of filter carrying case.

              Comments about Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter:

I haven't used this filter very much yet, but I plan on using it at weddings when I need a lower aperture for portraits as well as strobes during the day. It feels very solid and yet the 'Varying' aspect of the twist is very smooth. The only bad thing, which is stated in the included literature, says that at its darkest setting, with any kind of slow shutter will reveal an 'X' type shape of a darkened area on the photo. After some testing, this is more than accurate. However, if you can back the filter down about 1-3 stops, this 'X' nearly goes away.

I wouldn't rate any thing this high, but no color shift and large stop rang as well as hight image quality it's unmatched. I was going to get the tiffen nd set but with the run and gun shooting it wasn't going to get the use because miss the shot changing nd filters of hit the exposure. The filter is smoother then some of my lenes when shifting through stops. Money well spend it also hard to scratch I have been shooting moto x with and has see a ton of flying dirt.

Personally I preferred a set of ND filters but in some occasions I like the portability and versatility of a vary-ND and thats why I bought one. This is the best variable ND out there. No color change. Great looking images. 11stops. If you need one, this is the one.
