As a recent convert to photography, I decided to upgrade my equipment to a DSLR. But I wasn't excited about the bulk of the normal fare of DSLR's. After previewing some of the selection at a local retailer my intention to buy changed. I decided to go for a compact style slr. But the prices were quite a bit higher for the new compact camera systems. So I kind of abided my time thinking if I wanted to spend the money that was required. I became aware of BandHphotoandvideo webpage and looked at the camera I was interested in. To my surprise it was quite a bit cheaper than the major retailer. So after mulling it over for a couple of days I pulled the trigger and bought the camera. In the checkout process they offered me a deal of a 200mm zoom lens, a lens that I intended to eventually purchase, at half off! Well, I couldn't pass that up so I ordered the lens too. I am very pleased with the camera, lens and the service that I received from BandH! I had never purchased something with this expense online before so I was a bit nervous about it. But it has been a great experience owning a new camera through BandH. I highly recommend anyone considering purchases from BandH to be confident they will serve your needs with great products and be prompt and true to their stated objectives...And to my great surprise after opening the box the camera came in I found a $200.00 gift card included!!! Wow! Thankyou BandH!! Great experience for a first time ordered!

This camera only gets two stars for one specific reason:

Even with a really fast SD card–claimed to write at 90MB per sec–the camera will not take more than about 2 raw photos per 10 second interval. After taking the 3rd hypothetical photo, the buffer can't record any more until it's emptied in about 15 seconds. (Yes, I made sure to repeat these problems with a card formatted in the camera; used both a U1 Sandisk and another company's class ten card–the class ten card was as expected even slower.)

More than a week ago, I emailed Samsung USA about this problem when shooting single raws in quick succession and no one ever got back to me to say, for example: "There's a firmware fix for the buffer on its way".

The highspeed continuous shooting feature can record several raws in a second, but once one lifts one's finger from the shutter, the buffer takes more than 10 seconds emptying itself and one can't--during that time--switch to single shot mode and continue shooting, so one is prevented from shooting again until after the buffer is cleared.

Solely because of this buffer problem, I returned this camera to B+H.

Some small problems: The PASM dial can be hard to read because of shiny silver–almost black from some angles–letters raised above an already matte black dial.

When shooting video with older Samsung zoom lenses, not the kit lens included with this camera, the microphones record the sound of the auto focus system. (See note about ease of manual focus.)

General build quality is not up to that on my NX100–though the NX20 is nicely enough put together.

Some really nice things:

Video quality is excellent, and one has real manual control of imagining, PASM and ISO, not so much control for the sound recording part though. (I wonder if the hotshoe mic which has not shipped yet in the USA will provide things like balance control and input level control? Seems like firmware could add those features.)

The electronic view finder is very good, though not quite up the Sony Nex 7 standard.

The articulated AMOLED screen is extraordinary. The technology is so good that when it finally makes it to full sized TVs, those AMOLED TVs will make most flat screen TVs of today look like a 1975 colour tube. Because this screen is so amazing, and the EVF is so good, manual focus is easy.

Didn't extensively try the auto-focus system, but it seemed fast for a contrast system.

I like NX20 menus. I'm familiar with them because I own a Samsung NX100.

The built in flash worked well as a fill flash, but didn't really use it too much.

Never used the WiFi.

When shooting raw and extracting in Adobe Photoshop, ISO 4000 is perfectly usable.

Finally: If you're sure you'd never want to shoot more than a single raw per 15 second interval, this is a really good camera, and I'd recommend it.

If it weren't for the buffer problems, I'd have given the Samsung NX20 4 of 5 stars. (No, my NX100 with an older 14MP sensor doesn't have these buffer problems.)

Comments about Samsung 20.3Mp NX20 Mirrorless Wi-Fi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I bought the NX20 after doing extensive research. I decided that the APS-C format was an excellent compromise between a full-frame SLR and the micro-4/3 format. I felt there were advantages to the mirrorless style of SLR, that an APS-C would not be too big and heavy to carry all day nor too small to have an adequate set of controls or fit well in the hand.

The viewscreen is usable in bright sunlight. The viewfinder creates a good illusion of looking through the lens, but is much better than a mirror in low-light situations. The wi-fi features are good to have, especially automatic updating to the computer.

The ergonomics of the camera are nearly perfect. Controls are all easy to find and operate. Both the toothed wheel on top of the camera, which has multiple functions, and the dioptric adjustment for the viewfinder are a bit small, but those are minor issues. You can go anywhere from fully automatic to fully manual, even save combinations of settings.

Generally, a great camera for just about any use.

Comments about Samsung 20.3Mp NX20 Mirrorless Wi-Fi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

This camera is, in my opinion, seriously underrated. Its image quality is as good as any Sony NEX out there, while its user interface is superior. The kit lens is simply excellent optically. The only downside I can think of is rather long processing times, but you can improve the camera's performance significantly by using the fastest SD cards available (I use and recommend SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I cards).

I spent a long time researching DSLR/mirrorless system cameras when I decided to step up from my five year old bridge camera. I had decided on the Sony Nex-6 when I stumbled across a review on the NX20. After another few days of research I went with the Samsung and I have no regrets. IQ is astounding, performance and ergonomics are first-rate, and the Samsung lens line-up compares favorably, in both IQ and selection, with the Leica and Zeiss branded lines of their competitors. My only complaints would be relatively slow write times when shooting RAW (files are around 35 MB), and no mic input (though Samsung does offer a dedicated hotshoe mounted mic).

I got this camera from b&h after I sold my Oly omd. I like the omd a lot but as soon as you shoot over 1600 iso there is a noticeable degree of noise... I wanted a mirrorless camera with an APSC sensor but don't like Sony nex at all (except the NEX7 but it's too pricey and don't like Sony's lens line up) I stumbled by mistake into a review of the NX20, I would have never considered Samsung before except that my girlfriend has the EX1 which is an excellent camera. After trying it for a week, I think the camera is quick, good image quality and love the ergonomics. I think Samsung will be one of the major player within the coming next 2 years in mirrorless...

Comments about Samsung 20.3Mp NX20 Mirrorless Wi-Fi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

This camera is one of the best in its class, considering the fact that it is about $100-200 cheaper than its rivals. RAW quality is amazing with Samsung's pancake lenses, especially with 30/2.About the buffering speed, yes, it is very slow. Though in contrast to Jay's review, NX20 cannot use the full capacity of 90mb/s card speed anyway since it does not support UHS-I. The recent firmware update will also take care of the buffering problem. This is my personal opinion and preference, but I think NX20 is well designed for effective gripping and handling. The user-interface is intuitive, and I like the mini-dslr style as well. 1/8000 shutter speed goes well with 85/4 lens when there is a lot of light outside.

After the firmware update the processing speed has drastically improved on the NX 20. It is a great camera with a good grip, great image quality, and, maybe best of all, low priced lenses! Definitely a value even if you pay around [$] for the it, but here it comes with a kit zoom and tele zoom so its really a good deal all around. Don't be too worried about the raw speeds:)

Comments about Samsung 20.3Mp NX20 Mirrorless Wi-Fi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):
