I bought the Nikon D3200 as a replacement for my old trusted D80 and D40x combo. I also decided to downsize my lens collection to just two lens (for now) with the kit 18-55mm lens and the 55-300mm package lens for portability purposes. I have shot stills extensively for years now and I plan on do so on a ongoing basis but I am interested in doing motion work as well.

I notice that autofocus for still images is snappy in all sorts of lighting conditions (as long as there is some illumination, it can lock onto the subject). I used it extensively in a dark reptile conservatory at South of the Border and managed to capture quite a few good shots of the reptiles in their dark tanks.

As suggested on many DSLR filmography sites, I rely on manual focus for any video capture since autofocus hunts and creates a lot of audible noise. I tend to pre-focus on my subject and maintain a consistent distance from my subject.

As far as ISO noise goes, at 100% magnification, sure you are going to notice a lot of noise at higher ISO levels but once images are downsized, it is reduced drastically. Thankfully I have to do that for many of my images thanks to the 24 megapixels. In short, do not worry about any noise issues.

All in all, I definitely recommend this camera. The only things that I really miss compared to my D80 are the ability to autofocus with older lens, the Nikon CLS flash commander mode, and bracketing.

I bought one of these cameras in September with the new Nikkor 18-300 lens. I took about 300 shots in all light conditions, and had NO keepers. Most shots had little or no depth of field, even in bright sun. They were progressively focussed from the foreground to the subject, and progressively de-focussed from the subject to the background, but the subject was not in focus. None of the pictures looked sharp. The 18-300 lens vignetted and cast a large flash shadow at wide angle. While zooming-in in Photoshop, the pictures got really fuzzy way before pixelizing. The camera might as well have an 18 MP sensor. Thinking there must be something wrong with the camera and lens, I returned both. After a month, I bought the standard body and lens kit from B&H, along with the highly touted new Sigma 18-250 macro lens. Unfortunately, I got the same problems, and returned everything again. Now, before you say "operator error" let me tell you I've been taking pictures for 45 years, I bought my first medium format camera in 1985, and I have used 8 digital cameras since 2001. Everybody has marvelled at my pictures. I bought the D3200 thiking it was finally a high MP camera at a reasonable price from a reputable manufacturer so I could start making sharp 24" x 36" prints. Well, I was stumped at just trying to get good pictures out of it. I did side-by-side comparisons with my Sony Cyber-shot 16MP DSC-HX9V, and the Sony won. I also agree with dpreview that the extra MP's are probably not useful unless you use the fast Nikkor lenses that costs $2,000-12,000. Unfortunately this will probably be true for the new D5200 as well. Having had these experiences, and consider all the problems people are having with other new Nikon cameras, such as the D800 and D600, I think maybe Nikon is having a serious quality problem. I'm still searching for a reasonably priced camera with a long telephoto capability, and with a large sensor, that's easy to carry around. Maybe this is not "possible", but I think the manufacturers could do better than what they have now. Sony seems to recognize this nitch with the introduction of the RX1 and RX100, but they still don't have one with a long zoom.

This camera is the replacement for a Nikon D80 which I used for ten years and it finally broke. This one has more than twice the megapixels as the D80 and is lighter and easier to use. Great camera for anyone who wants to take pictures like a pro.

This camera is great. Received just before a camping trip. Camera is easy to use, and the Guide function is helpful to determine proper settings. My 12yr old is getting into photography and is learning so much. Picture quality is fantastic. Can't wait to add a few lenses to our bag. B&H is fantastic - several cameras purchased from you guys.

Enjoying the camera so far. I've shot mainly outdoor scenery, in various light levels. Pic look sharp. Controls are easy to use. I purchased and read Nikon d3200 for Dummies, and it has really helped with learning how to use the various exposure settings. I highly recommend this product for beginners to dslr photography.

So far I am thrilled with my purchase. It is very user friendly and seemingly simple. It can be used as simply as a point and shoot, but has many more features that allow for much more control and quality. Still, it isn't as overwhelming with options compared to other models. I also like that the body is not huge.

For an entry level DSLR this camera is amazing. Very easy to use especially if you just want to choose an auto setting for point and shoot picture taking. If you're more into choosing your settings manually like I am, there is almost an endless number of different combinations of settings to try out. I've had the camera a few weeks and I'm still learning how to best use all the available options. Great for shooting in color or B&W. The battery life has been longer than expected have gotten at least 1000 shots and was able to shoot some video on just one charge. Very happy with this purchase. The lens is what it is, not the greatest in the world, but good for beginners. If you're more advanced might want to consider just the body with a different lens combo.

This Nikon can meet all of my needs!!! It is very intuitive to use and has a good solid feel. I also really like the attractive was if the dark red body. The lens autofocus works beautifully! Great value for an advanced Nikon!

When I went to B&H, I had my mind set on buying a Cannon T3i but after talking to the rep and discussing with him what kind of photography I do he was suggesting maybe I should at the Nikon instead. Although he said that Cannons make great cameras he merely pointed out that a Nikon is right up my alley and he was right. This made me excited because I had been using a Nikon COOLPIX recently, so to hear that a Nikon is what I should be using was awesome. I went to watch my friends band play in Brooklyn and took photos and they turned out really well! I'm extremely happy with my purchase and can't wait to see what other photos will come out of it.

Ever thought of the word "foolproof"? The Nikon D3200 made me consider it. Turned it on and shot amazing pictures. So did my wife. Neither of us has photography skills. We love it. And the fact that it has all the bells and whistles as we advance in skills makes it even better. Good product, good price, we're happy.

I had been using a Canon Rebel T for well over a million photos in ten years. Since 1963 I have worked as a commercial artist / photographer. I used my new Nikon last weekend. It did seem to react faster than my old Canon There was a much longer lag time between shots with my Canon. I took nearly 300 pictures in a 4 hour period. In the same period of time I would get not quite 200 pictures with my Canon.
