...before you pass judgement on this lens...I imagine some will start blasting away right off the bat at f/1.8, and then pronounce the lens is "soft", or, they received a "bad copy" (I love that one). The fact is, f/1.8 has a RAZOR THIN d.o.f., and can trick some into misconstruing what's happening with the lens. I DID find I had to fine-tune the focus a tad (+3) on "my copy"...

SO, with all that out of the way, the lens is exactly what I needed...a replacement for my 35mm f/2D, which I was never happy with...too much c.a. wide open (and even stopped down a few).
This 28mm f/1.8 does just fine on my D300.
Why four stars instead of five? The price...that skinny brass ring they put on the end of the lens barrel must be REALLY expensive...

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I havent used this lens too much, but so far it is amazing. In my eyes it appears very sharp wide open and produces some beautiful photos. I have so far used the lens to shoot low light situations which my intentions for this lens originally was and still is. I shot a friend's concert with this lens and the images turned out really good. I love the fact that it is super light, although sometimes that makes it feel as if it is not as durable as my other lenses. I definitely think this will be a lens I keep on my camera not only during low light photography, but most of the time.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

Used for landscapes and general walkaround scenics.

Focus is faster than I can compose shots.

Feels like plastic but performs like all metal.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

This lens is tack sharp even wide open, which combined with its wide angle, makes it a perfect lens for indoor photography where flash photography is not allowed, especially in churches. I felt the 28mm was a good option for the range I wanted to shoot, and wow am I impressed!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I used this new lens for the first time in Yosemite last week. Got some really nice shots, although some were soft, my fault I'm sure. I bought it originally to shoot the failed Camelopardalid meteor shower using my D800, and it did very nicely almost wide open at f/2. A little bit of astigmatism in the far corners, but otherwise quite sharp. While not a cheap lens, it's still far less expensive than the f/1.4s and I can afford to give up 2/3 stop and save $$$. Overall, quite happy with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I have seen a lot of remarks on the soft focus for this lens. Wide aperture exposures with this type of prime really need the use of the center focal point.I know its not fun to re-compose but this lens does very well under those conditions. I have the same issue with my 50mm 1.4 on my D800. This is not the D800 edge focus issue BTW.

I got this lens over a year ago. This is a great lens that works in a variety of situations incredibly well. You can shoot handheld in extremely low light and get super sharp photos due to the speed and FL.

I wanted a wide angle lens for landscape work but didn't want too much distortion and disn't want to spend alot of money on a lens with good resolution. I didn't anticipate using a wide angle lens very much. I normally shoot with a 70-200 zoom and find myself composing mostly near the 200mm range. I use the 28mm f/1.8G with a D800E and at times with low light. I wanted to have this focal length "covered" but I didn't realize that I'd use this lens so much in the field. The image quality is awsome! The field-of-view that this lens provides along with great resolution keeps me attaching this lens to my camera.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I'm a photographer on the side and this lens absolutely amazing. Because of school restraints, I haven't been able to go out into the woods or mountains and take the landscape shots I want, but I have snapped a few architectural shots in Manhattan over the past month. The focus is dead on and pretty quick in my opinion. It also has the benefit of focusing really close to subjects to the point that it's almost a macro. It's tack sharp all around and I can't seem to notice any distinct distortion. Overall, this lens i perfect prime lens in combination with the 50mm and 85mm f1.8.

I am a professional portrait and commercial photographer who has moved away from zoom lenses to prime lenses. I currently use 28mm, 50mm, 85mm and 180mm. I find all of these primes to be excellent--extremely sharp with great bokeh. This lens fits perfectly with the other three lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

These 1.8 primes are excellent and affordable: a new standard in sharpness. This can be tough to see on a small JPG on the internet but can be seen readily when you make a 17x22 from a D800 file. The increased resolution of this lens makes full use of the D800's high detail rendition capacities.I got the 28mm to mate with my D800...so I would have a range of ultra high resolution prime lenses when I needed them for studio work. This lens does not disappoint. It goes well with the 50mm f1.4, the 85mm f1.8 or the 105 f2.8 micro. It is slighty sharper and has slightly smoother color than the quite good 16-35mm that I walk around with most of the time. It turns out to be a great field lens as well. 1.8 comes in handy for availabe light photography. The build is fairly light, like many of the newer Nikon lenses. I assume this has its plusses and minuses and it is too early to tell how it will hold up compared to the lenses of yore or the ones which cost megabucks...with their heavier often metal construction. It should not dent as much but I cannot evaluate its durability. Some reviews have mentioned a kind of moustache pattern of distortion or resolution uneveness...frankly I have not seen it. If it is there it can only be seen when shooting a flat wall and blowing the image up to beyond usable size..and needless to say should be super easily fixable in Photoshop. As a practical matter this rumor has either been fixed or is a non issue.
