This is really a fun new gizmo. It's easy to download pictures I've taken with my D7100 to my iPhone which I can then email to family members around the country. Downloading is slow, so it's only practical for one or two photos. Using it to take self-portraits or group photos with the camera on a tripod and the iPhone to monitor Live View and trigger the photo works really well. You can see on the iPhone screen exactly what the camera will take. The camera settings have to be done on the camera before shooting, but hopefully this will be an added feature to the iPhone app in the future. Example photo taken with D7100 on tripod, ISO 800, 1/20 sec, f/5.6, focal length 31mm on AF-S 17-55mm 1:2.8G Nikkor lens.

I bought this item because it had some good reviews and I thought it would let me control the camera more than just a regular remote. It doesn't. I also thought it was just a cool gadget. It's actually a bit of a pain to operate and just because the picture comes over the iphone doesn't mean the quality of the preview is any greater than the cameras screen quality. In other words, you're not gonna get some crisp display by which to fine tune camera settings. I also thought I would need it to transfer files to my computer more easily via wifi, but here's the best warning I can give you, when you have the wireless feature turned on, your file will begin wireless transfer to your phone and it will take forever to download; especially if you try to download the RAW files. Keep in mind, while the downloading of the file is in progress, you cannot take any more pictures. Your camera is tied up for the entire process. Other than the things I've said, it does do what it claims.

Does What It Claims

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

I bought this so I could transfer selected pictures to Android phone while traveling. It's a little slow, but not bad for the purpose. The first time I used it I though it wasn't working. When the bar shows 100% transfer you might expect it to be done but it isn't. It might take a few more minutes to create and display all 800-900 icons for the pictures on your card if you have a nearly full card. Once it has the icons you can check the ones you want to download to your phone and choose the size you want. Downloading the actual pictures is relatively fast. This is great for emailing pictures to friends while on vacation without the need for a computer.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

Was nice to be able to transfer camera images to our iPad in order to share the same day. Nikon's app could be a little easier to use, but it did get the job done.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

The mobile adapter came with my recent purchase of a Nikon camera. I've heard some people leave it in all the time, but I only use the adapter when I'm uploading photos to my phone. It works perfectly. The app is quite functional on the iphone, however it's best to upload photos in batches of 10, especially if they are high resolution. It gets the job done and transfers high quality photos to the phone quickly, and then I can post them to social.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

I shoot in dual-card mode on the 7100 with NEF's being written to slot 1 and JPEGs to slot 2. In this mode - and using Android with latest version of the App as of this review - the WU-1a doesn't seem to see slot 2 (the whole point of this device for me was to be able to download JPEGs off slot 2 while in the field). It allows me to convert the NEFs on slot 1 for download - or - if I pop out the card in slot 1 will allow me to download off slot 2. These extra steps are silly but necessary due to issues which are probably the fault the of the App and not the device. In general - the app is somewhat flaky. The device seems solid but Nikon needs to do more work on the App to make this "toy" worth the price.

I have used on P520 ( remote shutter and zoom in /out control + Live view to compatible android phone). Used with D5200 just shutter control a little better than IR remote since it is radio instead of line of sight (alas major WiFi stability issues). No other control other than able to access the memory card and select photos for transfer. Note- 3party software on android has almost FULL control of the P520. No android tablets are compatible with it that I have tried - only my phone worked with it.

I tried to use this adaptor to connect my D3300 to both my iPad Air 2 and my Samsung Galaxy. It couldn't connect with my iPad at all, and the connection with my Galaxy kept cutting in and out every few seconds. I'd say I got a defective adaptor, but there's just too many people out there who have had similar experiences.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

The wi-fi connection drops randomly and often requires a camera reset to get a connection back. The IOS/nikon app associated with the WU-1a is severely limited allowing one to snap a picture only -- no camera adjustments -- or to download a JPEG file -- no raw files. The potential is there and, hopefully, Nikon will do some work on improving it.

It works - once you get the companion app on your device and configure Wi-Fi. Worked super slick on my smart phone; took much more work on a tablet. Not an issue with the WU-1a, just getting everything synced up.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

I received a new Nikon DSLR for Christmas and this was part of the gift. My husband was super excited for me to be able to use my 'good camera' for my online store photos as well as family photos that we share from our phones regularly. I loved the ability to do this as well. It has simplified my life and made my family and products look great!! My only negative feedback on this 'wireless adapter' is that you have to turn off the wifi on your phone to use it. Instead of linking via bluetooth like other devices, this requires that you use the wifi option. Aside from that small inconvenience, it is a great addition and we love it.

you simply download the app, install it on your handheld device, and you can easily download from the camera to the handheld.

Even comes with a small case that attaches to the camera strap so you don't lose it.

                    Love the product.

Comments about Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter:

I know this is a hardware review, but the WU-1a requires software to make it more than just a hunk of plastic - and that software is problematic, to say the least.

I realize people complain about software all the time - but this, I just can't understand who at Nikon thought their "Wireless Mobile Utility" for iPhone should be released.

I'm not speaking at the level of, say, complaints you might hear regarding Microsoft or Adobe software. Whatever you think of their products, the software generally launches and functions. But WMU... It disconnects from the camera at random intervals. It loses the camera frequently. But even when it's technically operational, this is the slowest software I've had the misfortune to ever use. If you can imagine what Windows 10 might run like if you could somehow install it on an IBM PC from 1992, you might have some concept of just how slow this software is. Plus it doesn't really let you do much of anything other than click the shutter - there's no other camera control options available at all.

The hardware itself seems adequate. If you can find a third party piece of software to operate it, then this works. I have occasionally used qDslrDashboard to control my D7100 from a Mac - it's quite quirky but functional. The decision to generate a wifi network from the WU-1a and require your device join that, rather than having the WU-1a join an available network, seems needlessly limiting - after all, if you've got your phone with you, at a minimum you can use that as a hotspot.

I wish this worked well - the concept is great. But, no - without adequate software, there's no real reason to purchase this hardware.
