I have been a DSLR shooter for a while and have relied on the Small HD DP4 for my monitoring needs. I have since switched to shooting on the 2.5k EOS Mount Blackmagic Cinema Camera. The Small HD DP4 has been a welcome addition to my gear bag, but it unfortunately is HDMI only. The BMCC has an SDI output and does not have HDMI out. I am pleased to have a proper professional connection, but I don't want to fork over the dough for a SDI monitoring solution. This handy-dandy converter allowed me to keep using the DP4 and works beautifully. If your indoors, the rear LCD on the BMCC is fine. However, if you have a focus puller or are going outdoors, you need a monitor. Preferably a monitor with a proper viewfinder. The glare from the LCD is atrocious. Forget about sunny day shooting on the BMCC...even with the hood that comes with the package. I felt like Ansel Adams when I tried shooting without it. I was throwing a jacket over my head so I could see what I was doing. The Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converter is rugged and has great battery life. Get a locking HDMI cable and you're good to go.

Aside from the fact that this device did not work with the camera I purchased it for, its battery life is next to nothing and it therefore requires a power supply, negating its title "Battery Converter". Additionally, there's almost no indication to let you know that the thing is on and running and costing you battery life, so it can easily be left on by mistake. A better bet would be to pay more to get a monitor with SDI input.

Comments about Blackmagic Design SDI to HDMI Battery Converter:

I use this Blackmagic SDI to HDMI Battery converter for long cable runs.
It's great to convert an SDI signal to go into HDMI Monitors or TVs.
It also has a built-in battery, so if you lose power, it will run off battery power for about two hours, or until you can get more AC power.
I have many of these converters.

    Great Gear.

Comments about Blackmagic Design SDI to HDMI Battery Converter:

This is another great product from BMD. The converter is solid for HD and SD formats. All audio is preserved and available on the HDMI out. The built in battery is a huge plus for when doing live remotes, and also as a backup power source should your wall plug become disconnected. The Loop-out on the BNC connector is also very handy.

Connected it, troubleshooted every possible way. Went to support sites, tried upgrading software/firmware. Nothing. There is no way of "fixing" the issue if it doesn't work.Stick with a simple non-powered converter.

Everything works but the blackest area in the picture looks brighter than it should. I tested comparing the same HD scene coming from Sony EX3 through the BMD HDLinkPro, this Battery Converter and Ocean Matrix SDI-HDMI and the black from this is greyer than the other two.

Comments about Blackmagic Design SDI to HDMI Battery Converter:

As a DIT, i used the product attached to a Black Magic Cinema camera via the SDI out of the camera to allow the DP/director to monitor shooting in video village on a 32' tv (the tv's hdmi in). When the camera was handheld, i attached this little box to the top of the camera via velcro, and ran sdi out from the camera through this converter and to a 7' Marshall monitor.

It was great having the ability to run it on the internal battery for the handheld shots. Done with handhelds, simply plug it back in to charge up the internal battery while using it on my DIT cart with a long sdi cable from camera to then HDMI to video village.

It's small size is great (a little bigger than the palm of your hand) and adds virtually no weight to the camera. It's external case is rugged!! And is great for on-set or field work.

DOES NOT WORK WITH CANON C100 (AND OTHERS) OUT OF THE BOX!!!!
The converter itself seems to be of good quality but the with the firmware that comes on it, it doesn't work with the Canon C100 out of the box. 'updating' the firmware to the older version 1.9.1 which can be found on Blackmagic's website fixed that problem. If you google the problem you will find many people that give the steps to do this including some youtube videos.

I use SmallHD monitors with my Canon 7D packages but don't have the SDI versions for when I get called for jobs with other cameras. As I do a lot of shooting in the field and run and gun type of work, I have struggled to find a solution for providing power to these converters until now. I just bought this box last week and immediately put it to use on a job. It worked flawlessly! I'm probably going to add the HDMI to SDI version to my kit as well.
