    Back to Basics

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

So we all now navigate by satnav, trusting our journey to the voice of our choice, well here you have a chance to get rewards for your own efforts. At first I found it frustrating to nail the focus but soon found a solution that works for me. On my Nikon D7100 I am already shooting 1.5 times focal length and find in hand hold, the focus confirm indicator fluctuating front to back focus. But I stop playing with the lens at that point in favour of framing the shot whilst fine tuning the focus by swaying to and fro, this works for me and I reliably get high percentage of good shots. At f1.4 on a tripod you can see that it's a little soft but at 1.8 it's very sharp. That said at f1.4 the contrast of subject separation is so high that unless you are analysing the photo, you will be distracted by any slight softening with subject separation. For value, I score it very highly, I only have one criticism which may be finger trouble on my part and that is I cannot get the camera to confirm focus audibly with this lens.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Lens is manual, does not have stabilization; don't let this hold you back, the quality of the images are amazing if you take your time. Some chromatic aberration exists at f1.4, however it disappears at 1.6. Focus range on lens is smooth and adequate to make easy precise adjustments. Flickr also has a group solely dedicated to this lens, which says a lot. Using a macro adapter provided superior results as well.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Awesome value if you can live without AF and deal with manual aperture. I use it on my Nikon D700 and my Fuji X-T1 with an adaptor. In both cases, it works flawlessly. The IQ is in the same league with my Nikkor 85 1.4D. I use it mainly for portraits so manual focus is not a big deal. It's very sharp wide open and gets better when you stop down. Even at f1.8 the sharpness and contrast is greatly improved over f1.4, however you most definitely can shoot it at 1.4 and get great results.
It would be a good sports lens for certain indoor sports if it had AF, but I would not suggest photographing moving objects with this lens. The DOF is very thin at 1.4 and you'll end up very frustrated. For anything that holds relatively still however, this is quite a good bargain lens for the performance it puts out.
Build quality is good even with some plastic parts. The lens is heavy and feels solid in hand so I don't anticipate problems related to durability if you can minimize abuse. Heck, even if it doesn't last, you can buy four or five of them for the same price as a Nikon or Canon equivalent.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I'm an automotive photographer and auto focus isn't that big of a deal unless I'm using it for events. Used this lens last weekend at an Oklahoma drift event and it worked flawlessly. Def. a great lens if you don't care about auto focus. Super sharp wide open.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I needed a fast lens to shoot indoor HS sporting events. Basketball, ice hockey, fencing, swim meets etc.. Some HS gymnasiums have very poor lighting!!!! Also happy that I got the version with the Focus Confirm Chip. My Nikon D7000 couples with this lens nicely ensuring correct manual focus. The f/1.4 max apreture gave me the flexability to shoot between that and f/2.8. I was able to keep the iso at 1600 or lower while shooting in apreture priority mode to get the fastest shutter speed while keeping digital noise to a minimum. New equipment always comes with a learning curve and this lens is no exception. For capturing fast action I needed to re-learn how to pre focus. (There were no AF lenses around when I bought my first camera, a Nikon F in 1970) Bottom line is, when "I got it right" the pics were sharp and crisp. Great action shots. I only gave it 4 stars because it could really use auto focus.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Excellent build quality, there is a lot of metal on this lens.
Image quality is great for photo and video.
The focus ring is a little tight, but smooth. I thought it would be a little looser.
If you plan on shooting anything with action, forget about it and get the nikon 85mm with autofocus. Manual focus does take time.
Also, it doesn't focus on close up objects.
As i mainly shoot video on a tripod with this lens, the Samyang fulfills my requirements.
