Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

For the price w/ low F stop , this lens cant be beat. Crisp pictures and great depth of field , very good for low light photography. If you are looking for a portrait lens that you can also use in low light situations and don't mind manually focusing then this lens is a great option. I will be making future Samyang purchases.

I use this along with my other lens - good for portrait.
This is a nice lens - nice bokeh!
At first I thought that I would not like the lens because it is a manual lens. But thanks now I am force to learn how to shoot in manual. It is not hard and it does produce great images since you are in control of the aperture, speed, and ISO.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

After reading all the info I could find on how the Nikon f/1.8 and f/1.4 (both D and G versions) stacked up against the Samyung, I finally decided to take a chance on this inexpensive lens.

It is well worth the money.

It is not razor sharp, but certainly usable, at 1.4 and only improves somewhat at 1.8. (But neither is the Nikon 1.8G, at 1.8 IMHO). I would say the Samyung is essentially even with the Nikon 1.8G at 1.8. It IS RAZOR SHARP at 2.8. No kidding, razor, tack, whatever adjective you want to use. I am quite impressed.
I didn't bother testing it at apertures greater than 2.8, because that it not what I bought it for, nor what I believe it was intended to be used for.

It could be a little more contrasty.

It is manual focus. I must admit that it is harder to focus on a Nikon DX than I remember lenses being on my 70's vintage SLR, even with the KatzEye screen in the DSLR (I am 35 years older now, which may have something to do with it). If you don't have the alternate focus screen, I believe you will be forced to use LiveView or rely on the confirmation dot.
Speaking of the focus confirm dot. Simply having the dot 'on' is not accurate enough for DOF at 1.4. I did use the Focus Fine Tune to move exact focus to just when the right arrow goes out and the dot comes on. That seems to be working pretty well.

The lens feels good in your hand. Smooth action on the focus ring. Very long throw on the ring, a must for accurate focusing. (For those who never used a manual focus lens, it is definitely not the same as using manual focus override on an autofocus lens.)

Older reviews bashed the hood a lot. Samyung must have made a change because, if anything, the hood on mine is difficult to remove. It certainly isn't going to fall off.

Summary: If you are looking for a f/1.4 lens this one is worth a good, long look. Remember what it was built to do, take portraits and make cream. You are not going to get f/1.4 pics of your kids running and jumping with the dog in the back yard (unless you are really, really, REALLY good at focusing).

For reference purposes - I started photography in the mid 70's with a fully manual Yashica FR. I'm a Nikon snob and a pixel peeper. So weight the review accordingly :)

As always, B&H is the go-to source for all your equipment.

I tried the lens this morning and although a bit heavy, it mounted well offered a very good image. The mount required a little effort in order for auto focus to function properly, so I suggest that reading the instructions first would very helpful :-).

Excellent beginners portrait lens - or if you are just cheap - or still love manual focus from the old days. My D810 reads it just fine. Tack sharp f22 - f2.8. Wide open at 1.4 everything seems to have a glow to it. Not sure if its the lens or the way I'm shooting.

              Back to Basics

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

So we all now navigate by satnav, trusting our journey to the voice of our choice, well here you have a chance to get rewards for your own efforts. At first I found it frustrating to nail the focus but soon found a solution that works for me. On my Nikon D7100 I am already shooting 1.5 times focal length and find in hand hold, the focus confirm indicator fluctuating front to back focus. But I stop playing with the lens at that point in favour of framing the shot whilst fine tuning the focus by swaying to and fro, this works for me and I reliably get high percentage of good shots. At f1.4 on a tripod you can see that it's a little soft but at 1.8 it's very sharp. That said at f1.4 the contrast of subject separation is so high that unless you are analysing the photo, you will be distracted by any slight softening with subject separation. For value, I score it very highly, I only have one criticism which may be finger trouble on my part and that is I cannot get the camera to confirm focus audibly with this lens.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Lens is manual, does not have stabilization; don't let this hold you back, the quality of the images are amazing if you take your time. Some chromatic aberration exists at f1.4, however it disappears at 1.6. Focus range on lens is smooth and adequate to make easy precise adjustments. Flickr also has a group solely dedicated to this lens, which says a lot. Using a macro adapter provided superior results as well.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Awesome value if you can live without AF and deal with manual aperture. I use it on my Nikon D700 and my Fuji X-T1 with an adaptor. In both cases, it works flawlessly. The IQ is in the same league with my Nikkor 85 1.4D. I use it mainly for portraits so manual focus is not a big deal. It's very sharp wide open and gets better when you stop down. Even at f1.8 the sharpness and contrast is greatly improved over f1.4, however you most definitely can shoot it at 1.4 and get great results.
It would be a good sports lens for certain indoor sports if it had AF, but I would not suggest photographing moving objects with this lens. The DOF is very thin at 1.4 and you'll end up very frustrated. For anything that holds relatively still however, this is quite a good bargain lens for the performance it puts out.
Build quality is good even with some plastic parts. The lens is heavy and feels solid in hand so I don't anticipate problems related to durability if you can minimize abuse. Heck, even if it doesn't last, you can buy four or five of them for the same price as a Nikon or Canon equivalent.

I'm an automotive photographer and auto focus isn't that big of a deal unless I'm using it for events. Used this lens last weekend at an Oklahoma drift event and it worked flawlessly. Def. a great lens if you don't care about auto focus. Super sharp wide open.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I needed a fast lens to shoot indoor HS sporting events. Basketball, ice hockey, fencing, swim meets etc.. Some HS gymnasiums have very poor lighting!!!! Also happy that I got the version with the Focus Confirm Chip. My Nikon D7000 couples with this lens nicely ensuring correct manual focus. The f/1.4 max apreture gave me the flexability to shoot between that and f/2.8. I was able to keep the iso at 1600 or lower while shooting in apreture priority mode to get the fastest shutter speed while keeping digital noise to a minimum. New equipment always comes with a learning curve and this lens is no exception. For capturing fast action I needed to re-learn how to pre focus. (There were no AF lenses around when I bought my first camera, a Nikon F in 1970) Bottom line is, when "I got it right" the pics were sharp and crisp. Great action shots. I only gave it 4 stars because it could really use auto focus.

Comments about Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Excellent build quality, there is a lot of metal on this lens.
Image quality is great for photo and video.
The focus ring is a little tight, but smooth. I thought it would be a little looser.
If you plan on shooting anything with action, forget about it and get the nikon 85mm with autofocus. Manual focus does take time.
Also, it doesn't focus on close up objects.
As i mainly shoot video on a tripod with this lens, the Samyang fulfills my requirements.
