I actually have the Sony SxS USB card reader, which is very cumbersome because it requires AC power to operate. I have been using it for years in the field as part of a TV news crew. Every now and then the USB connection drops, or doesn't connect right away, which is frustrating. Otherwise, it's fine. But now with the echo thunderbolt card reader, it's definitely faster, and very convenient because it requires no power source. So you can log video while still out on a shoot or in a car or plane. Perhaps the best way to use it? Dump all footage onto your hard drive, if you have the room, and then disconnect the echo. I have a Mac Book Air, and an hour of logging soundbites used up about 10-20% of battery power. The echo does get very warm, though. And it does not come with a thunderbolt cable. The echo seems very sturdy and well built, made out of metal and hard plastic/rubber type edges.

Works great for SxS cards but I haven't been able to get it to work with My Sonnet eSata Express Card adaptor, which is primarily why I bought it. I was in touch with Sonnet tech support and ran all the diagnostics and power calibrations they recommended for my MBPr but to no avail. The tech support rep became unresponsive after that. Disappointing.

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

My company has several of these adapter/readers as we use SxS cards in several Sony cameras. The best part about this adapter is the price. The average for a Sony version that does either USB 3 or Thunderbolt is almost $[$]. It transfers fast and easy. You may need to update your SxS drivers to make sure you can see it. I love that it doesn't need external power making it great for transfers in the field.Cons are that there is no Thunderbolt cable provided and, truth be told, this time I bought one of these because the last one died on us with no reason why.

Depending on your Mac, you'll need to download the required drivers. Scared me for a minute when I tried to plug the reader in having not installed them and nothing happened...once I installed them, A+ in terms of speed and usefulness.

It just works. can't be better than that, right? plug. play. shooting more and more XAVC at 100mbps and files are getting bigger....this really cuts down transfer times when coupled with Thunderbolt offload drives.

Load footage on the fly, with a client, or back at home. I've put off buying something like this for a couple of years, and I'm glad I have one now.
It loads the SxS Pro cards so fast, that I can edit with the client minutes after shooting, and it looks a lot more professional than connecting the camera to my laptop. This is a solid piece of gear for a great price.

Again, well built overall. Only questioning comment is that when setting the SxS into place in this Sonnet Adapter, it makes clear contact within the slotted chamber, HOWEVER---I wish it made just a bit more of a SOLID contact so to confirm that the connection is MOST solid. Otherwise a solidly built machine delivered on time and on budget!

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

I have a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt input. I bought this Sonnet Echo Pro to read a Sony SxS card and Hoodman adapted SxS cards. After finding a software driver and installing it, my Sonnet Echo Pro works well with the Sony SxS card. However, I cannot even get my Hoodman cards to appear as an available drive on the screen. What to do ? These SxS cards were written by a Sony EX3 about two years back. They have been read successfully on my old MacBook Pro and by the camera itself. So, my opinion on the Sonnet Echo Pro is not good.

The Apple has fallen. While Thunderbolt is great, the fast changes from USB 2 to 3, to fire-wire, to Express Card and now TB has made some MacBooks almost useless with a variety of external devices. This box helped save us from that flawed Apple

Progress may be great, but why can't I use my expensive RAID and other external devices.

Fast and Easy as an SxS card reader

Comments about Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter:

When I first started using an XDCAM camera with SxS cards I installed the drivers from Sony's website to allow my Mac to import files directly from the camera over USB. I lived without a dedicated memory card reader for a while just because of the expense. After all, Sony's SxS reader is $ and it's just a memory card reader! I bought this Sonnet device and a Thunderbolt cable and then, presto! It was plug-and-play using the drivers which were already on my computer. Transfer speeds are blazing fast (especially compared to USB 2 using the camera as a card reader). Now that I've started using it, I don't mind having spent the money for this. I only use it as an SxS card reader so I can't comment on other functions it can do.Just FYI, I also have an XQD card and adapter to use with my XDCAM camera. When I put that card with its adapter into this Sonnet device it did nothing. That's okay because I have a USB 3 card reader for the XQD card, and it's only a little slower than using this Sonnet reader with an SxS card.

Using the Sonnet Echo Pro Thunderbolt adapter /reader on a feature film. After 2 weeks of filming, no problems with any of the SxS cards from an Arri Alexa.

I understand this is the preferred reader for DIT's in the industry, and it has not let me down yet.

Had to download a driver, which was a bit convoluted, but works flawlessly.

I like the rubber feet on the bottom- they don't slide when you put a card in. The overall construction is very solid.

You'll need to download the drivers from Sonnet to make it work with a MacBook Pro, but very simple. I do wish it had 2 Thunderbolt ports for loop through. Also, it does not come with a Thunderbolt cable.

For a long, long, long time, my options for ingesting Sony XDCAM SxS media was always USB 2, so it was slow. Recently Sony came out with a newer USB3 bus-powered SxS card reader, however it is much more expensive than the Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt reader. It's super fast; as fast as the SxS media can go, and it's also bus-powered. A perfect solution for editing on my MBPR at a very reasonable price. In order for my MBPR to see the SxS media card, I had to download the Sony XDCAM driver for Mac, and it was easy and solid.
