Unlike virtually "ALL" other contenders (comperable makes/models; e.g., compare the Gitzo GT1542T - B&H # GIGT1542T), in this corner stands the Oben CT-2491 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs, which I purchased because these sticks: (1) hold more than 10x their weight (3.5 lbs vs. 39.6 lbs); (2) stand just over 6' tall (72.5 inches, and approximately 77.5" with the head attached); and, (3) are less expensive than the other guys. With these legs, I use the Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head (B&H # MAMH055M8Q5), and, the VariZoom pan-&-tilt fluid video head. In fact, these light, carbon-fiber sticks are so strong and sturdy that I can even use them to support the CobraCrane II Jib, with the 11' Extension Kit (B&H # COCC2EK2), which when fully extended weighs in at a whoping 33 lbs., plus an additional payload of 7 lbs. for the camera, lens, etc. The question is, would I recomend this contender for a shot at the title?

I like EVERYTHING about this tripod.......except its ability to carry out the primary function of a tripod; to hold the camera/lens rock steady. The overall fit and finish of the tripod is excellent, the height-to-weight-to-folded length trade-offs are all excellent, the padded carrying case is great and it accommodates both the tripod and a ball head, it has retractable spike feet as standard equipment (Gitzo Mountaineer does not) and the legs are remarkably sturdy and rigid, really more rigid than I expected.

However, where the whole picture (no pun intended) completely unravels is at the center column; it is unbelievably wobbly. We've all heard that the steadiest configuration for a tripod is with the center column fully down but with this pod, that's its loosest position. In this position with the column fully tightened, I can take the bottom end of the column between my thumb and forefinger and gently shake it back and forth nearly a 1/4 inch! Consequently, the top of the center column where the ball head would be mounted is also shaking back and forth like a bobble-head on a dash board. I tried taking off the shock absorbing rubber O-ring beneath the ball head mount so that the mount was in direct contact with the tripod and it is still wobbly. At full extension the column is just as wobbly. Oddly enough, the steadiest position I found was with the center column half-way extended.

I tested out the pod with the biggest camera/lens load that I have and the results confirmed my fears; the photos were soft. If you look through a very long lens while it is mounted on the camera and just lightly touch either the lens or camera, you can see the picture moving all over.

So, I returned this pod to B and H and ordered the Gitzo. I'll let you know how that turns out. Kudos to B and H for superb customer service; the return was a snap and they paid the return shipping, you just can't ask for more than that! Thanks! Note to Oben: fix your badly flawed center column and you've got a winner.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

As this is the first Oben product I have purchased I can only evaluate this tripod.
I purchased this tripod for a photo safari to Costa Rica. I was pleased with its many features including the weight it would hold and the height it would attain. The height was important for photographing animals in the jungle canopy.
I was pleased with the light weight and that it fit neatly on the back of my photographic backpack.
I was walking through the airport when I discovered that this particular tripod was a lemon. I heard a clank and turned around to find the lower segment of one of the legs had fallen off. I had not even used the tripod as of yet. As some sort of friction lock was supposed to keep the leg on the tripod this was obviously defective or absent. This cut the height of the tripod by about a foot. OK, I was willing to bend over a little for the high canopy shots and while I had brought a spare camera I had not brought a spare tripod, especially since this one was brand new. The first day in the field the center segment of a different leg became frozen to where it would neither extend or contract. I was missing many photo opportunities due to these inconveniences with the tripod. I was saved by a friend having a spare tripod his wife was not using which he loaned to me.
Upon my return home I contacted B&H. Due to the length of time I was out of the country I was just outside the 30 day return policy. I commend B&H service in working with me for the return of this tripod.
I cannot judge the quality of other Oben tripods, and to be fair, this one may have been a fluke- but it was a complete piece of junk. I will invest a little more in a higher quality instrument.

major problem in center column

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

The center column in my tripod is either missing a part or the design has a critical problem. My tripod has a significant wobble and it appears to be the mechanism that clamps the center column to the tripod plate. I hope it is missing a key part or it is severely under designed.i sent an email and left message with Oben support. once I know how they respond I will update or post again.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Bought this tripod as a kit with the head and was excited to get it but was not at all happy. The tripod is stiff and difficult to close, some of the leg sections stick and have to be nearly forced to close. Compared to my Benro this is a waste of money. What I did like is that it is tall enough for my purposes on uneven ground.

B&H took it back without any trouble (I love you guys :) ) and I wrote to Benro telling them what I was looking for and they recommended their Induro line. I bought one from Induro and couldn't be happier.

Good value, but has some flaws

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This Oben model is quite sturdy, and a good value especially if you get it on sale. It does seem to have some odd design flaws, however. The center column clamp does not grip the post securely because the diameter of the post is slightly larger than the top fitting. This allows it to wobble slightly. If you detach the center column and clamp the fitting alone, the problem is solved, but of course you lose that vertical adjustment. The bigger problem is that the lower fitting on the center post has a sharp edge that damages the carbon legs when they are folded. There is a rubber o-ring just below the sharp edge and if it was a bit larger in diameter, it would prevent this damage from occurring. As is, however, it serves no purpose whatsoever that I can see. A very confounding design.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I use this 'pod with my Canon 5d3 and various lenses ranging from the 16-35 to a 70-200. What I like aobut it is it's height--with the head--it's actually a bit too tall for me (at 6' 1-ish"), but for me, I'd rather have it be too tall than too short. I also love it's weight.

I also love the fact that it comes in a very nice case.

What I'm less thrilled about is the twist lock legs. OTOH, the 'pod is .6 lbs. LIGHTER than the same unit with flip locks and since I plan to travel with it, over time that will make a difference. I can get used to the slight inconvenience of the twist locks. My first unit had a twist lock that didn't function correctly and I returned it. The 2nd unit is fine.

Oben seems to make decent gear. Not as expensive as some, nor as cheap as others. This one will hold way more than I'll ever put on it, so it fits my bill.

Great tripod for landscape and nature photography, my last two tripods were flimsy (insert name brand store here) tripods that didn't support a lot of weight and felt like they would fall over if I sneezed. This tripod is rock solid and can shoot from almost any angle imaginable and super light.

I'm going out on a limb here and giving five stars. Just out of the box and barely used it definitely deserves four stars. Time and it's durability will show whether it truly deserves five.
The 39lb capacity is probably over-kill, but experience with cheaper aluminum tripods made me want something more solid.

I use it mostly for bracketed architectural photography. So, it's good to have a sturdy base to work from. It's not the lightest carbon fiber tripod out there, but it is much lighter than my old one. My Nikon D3s sits securely atop the Oben ball head (purchased separately).

I normally use another manufacturer's Carbon Fiber leg set with a Gimble head for my large lenses. This unit is perfect for travel and can handle hefty lenses if you know how to shoot them. Excellent with body/short lens combinations and some mid to long end zooms with tripod collars.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I am always on the move and doing shots in the wild or just taking it easy and doing long time exposures. no matter what it is i'm doing except for sports photography this fella is light weight and is strong enough to hold any of the gear i have.
