Bought this as the first prime lens for my new Pentax K-5 system. The first thing that struck me when I used it was how noisy the auto focus was. Guess years of Canon USM has spoiled me. After that auditory shock though, it was all uphill. The focusing is spot on on my K-5, and it is sharp from wide-open as far as I can tell. The Bokeh is nice too - much better than the Canon EF 50 F/1.8. But then that lens is half the price!I like the build and the design of the lens... solid plastic and compact. The plastic mount doesn't bother me... but yeah for $ + one could expect a metal mount. But we are paying for the Pentax clarity and contrast...both of which are there in loads. I think the bigger decision for potential buyers should be this against the trusty Pentax FA 50 F/1.4. You can get used copies of the same for the cost of a new 50 F/1.8. I decided for the new 1.8 because I believe that technology becomes better with time. Why buy old when one can buy new? ;) So far - haven't been disappointed.

It is noticably soft wide open, so don't buy it for the speed. It's decent when stopped down to f2.8; by f5.6 it's as sharp as anything. Auto focus is VERY loud but quick.

The lens mount is plastic so I doubt it would stand up to heavy use. I honestly don't have a problem with the rest of the plastic. Structurally it seems sturdy enough, and plastic is probably more thermally stable than metal anyway. The mount though, should be a little tougher, in my opinion.

This one was included with the K-3 by B&H, so I'm grateful to have it and it will see some use, but overall it isn't as good as other normal primes. I'd say it's worth having in the bag just because it weighs next to nothing.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I have been using only kit lines for a while, a friend told me to invest in at least a 50mm or 85mm.
I started with the 50mm and WOW the difference in my photo, they so much sharper. I used it for the first time in a night cityscape and put let my friends see it, and a few of them wants it printed out for wall art.

Great price and FAST shipping from B&H. Plastic mount...who cares? The lens weight practically nothing and the images it produces are superb with my K30!

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

For someone like myself just learning photography, this lens is awesome. It gave me a chance to explore my DSLR even further with little investment. Will I buy a better and more expensive lens in the future? Yes. But for now I'm still learning and this lens is just fine.

This lens is a great value.

By MH

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

Shooting with the 50mm was reminiscent of the film days when I shot only with fixed focal length lenses. I had a blast using this lens which was surprisingly sharp considering the cost. For me this is a keeper!

Pros

  • Consistent Output
  • Lightweight
  • Nice Bokeh
  • Sharp

Cons

  • Loud Focus
  • No Included Lens Hood
  • No Weather Resistance
  • Plastic Mount

Best Uses

  • Indoors/Low Light
  • Portraits
  • Weddings/Events

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens is quite sharp and provides great bokeh.
For $89.00 this is a must have piece of glass!

The downsides are.
1. Plastic Mount
2. Loud focus
3. No included lens hood
4. No weather sealing

All that being said if the above items were included or corrected with this lens it would not cost $89.00. So I must say that it is a great value and IQ is great for the money spent.

StartUr Prime

By Wade

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This is a great starter prime lense. It's an inexpensive tool to help teach you how depth of field works in addition to working with less light than my other lenses can handle. I use it for portrait and urban photography. The autofocus may be slow and noisy, but I usually manually focus anyway. I'd recommend this for amateurs and novices like myself.

Great lens for the price

By JRG

from Windsor Locks CT

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens does everything it should do and more. Sure it's a little loud when focusing, and may struggle a bit (a bit) in lower light, but for this price it is great and the images are really good. If you want any better you're going to have to step up in price...and that is not the purpose of this lens. It is great to know that Pentax still cares to put out good affordable PRIME lens'. This allows newer shooter to grow, and those of us who have been shooting a while to have affordable backup lenses.

Haven't had much opportunity to use it since I got it. Like that it is very compatible so far with my Pentax DSLR in that it does work with the change of f stop setting on the camera. Need to try more situations with auto focus. My lenses before this one were just manual focus.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I've only had this a week but the image quality is excellent, esp. when the price is considered. I've tested it with an artificial star and there is only, even wide open, only a slight trace of coma and virtually no astigmatism. No hint of field curvature or chromatic aberations. When used in my K50 the images are excellent wide open and only get better when stopped down to f/5.6. When used on my Q10, which is even more demanding due to the small pixel size, the images are still very, very good wide open. Much better than my older 50mm f/1.4 even when it is stopped down to f/2 and used with an APS-C format chip.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens performs quite well wide open at f/1.8. Stopping down to 2.8 or more gives even sharper images and remains quite fast. Though the autofocus is loud, it is also fast and accurate on my K-50. Manual focus is fantastic on this because of the wide rotation range which I believe I read to be 190 degrees. The whole range is very smooth.

The plastic construction is sturdy and seems durable. This and the older autofocus are what make it so affordable. This is an excellent value. I've done quite varied work so far with just this single lens and it has met every need like a champ.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I bought this lens for my wife to use on her Pentax K-7. It does quite well at close range - minimum focus up to distances around 8 feet. However, from about 8 ft to 15 feet it just won't focus on the subject no matter what. I tried adjusting the fine focus in the camera body and it made no difference. I even tried to focus manually but to no avail. It didn't matter if the subject had high or low contrast. I tried multiple focus sensors on the camera as well as changing the camera orientation from horizontal to vertical and still no success. With or without flash it still won't return a sharp picture in that 8-15 ft range. I'm returning the lens.
